not immediately fire you up with ungovernable excitement. But, as the acclaim and
hugefy positive fesponse to the film Helveticaworldwide attests, the fascinating
story behind this simple, clean typeface, which can be found almost anywhere in
the world where English is spoken, is a sulprisingly interesting one.
Invented in Switzerland in 1957, by designers Max Miedingerand Eduard Hoffman,
the brisk, san-seriffont was originally named Neue Haas Grotesk, before being
lenamed Helvetica in its bid forworldwide domination. And that's what happened.
To watch the entertaining account of how it came to take over the world. simply head
down to Traffic in Al Quoz between Dec 9.16, for a free screening, nightly at 7.30pm.
