JOB DESCRIPTION Job title: Technical Support Consultant (Linux) Department/ Business Stream: Technical Support – IS Customer Services Group Location: Science Park, Cambridge Reports to (job title): Enterprise Applications Team Leader Purpose of the job: Cambridge Assessment is looking for an experienced Support Analyst who will focus on the support of systems running Linux operating systems using Apache Tomcat for the web tier. The key focus of the role is to support our rapidly expanding Linux systems and the multiple applications and technologies that interact with and rely upon them. You will review, maintain, troubleshooting and correct critical production systems in a busy data centre environment while maintaining best practice as suggested by ITIL and industry principles. We are looking for an enthusiastic team player with a strong primary skill set in Linux distros particularly from Red Hat, Oracle and Debian focusing on web site provision using Apache Tomcat. We are keen to see evidence of skills with our other key technologies which include VMware virtualisation (vSphere 4 & 5); SAN solutions from a major tier one provider; switching and routing using Cisco hardware; Firewall provision via Cisco or Checkpoint products and load balancing via F5 load balancers. You will demonstrate real world experience equating to LPIC-2, and be able to evidence extensive experience of administrating the listed primary technologies, good experience with a selection of the secondary technologies and display a sound level of knowledge on the foundation concepts that make up modern IT systems. You should be able to plan your time well and schedule using your own initiative, possess strong problem solving skills and deliver high quality work. Experience of Linux and Windows interoperability will be of particular interest while any programming skills will be favourably received. Principal Accountabilities: • Deliver world class Linux platforms enabling Cambridge Assessment sites and services to operate with high levels of resilience and reliability. • Provide expert advice to help Line Management by providing technical information about the capabilities of IT products within the operational support environment, to assess the feasibility of proposed projects to ensure appropriateness of IM solutions and to maintain alignment with the wider technical framework. 1 Hills Road Cambridge CB1 2EU United Kingdom Telephone + 44 1223 553311 Fax + 44 1223 460278 www.cambridgeassessment.org.uk • To define, resolve and document problems during implementation of projects in the operational and support environment, to ensure adequate transfer of knowledge to the support technicians. • Help prepare for implementation of projects in the operational/support environment including evaluation, feasibility, technical investigations, pilots, proofs of concept, training and education. • Build and maintain effective relationships with other IT Teams, third party suppliers and the Business Streams to facilitate effective delivery of quality driven projects. • Reporting of milestones, costs and resources used against project plans to management. • Provide second/third line technical support in areas where job holder possesses unique technical expertise.
