Professor Penelope Roache ESL/FL Department, InterAmerican Campus Speech Level 5 “Paper or Plastic?” Objectives To familiarize students with the disposal, recycling, and environmental problems associated with using plastic bags. Procedure Students will view the film Plastic Bag. Before viewing the film students will answer a brief questionnaire. Example questions: 1. 2. 3. 4. How often do you use plastic bags? Do you choose paper or plastic at the grocery store? How many bags do you usually use when you purchase your groceries? Do you recycle plastic bags? Vocabulary Students will distinguish between the terms biodegradable and recyclable. After answering questions students will view the film. This film traces the life of a plastic bag in a futuristic fantasy. After the film, students will discuss and respond to questions such as: What did the film tell you about plastic bags that you didn’t already know? Is the film based on fact, opinion, or something else? Do you think things are as bad as the film implies? Assessments Students will be given a “plastic bag use worksheet” to take home. The worksheet will help students track their use of plastic bags on a daily basis. Students will complete the worksheet and discuss the questions/answers in class.
