Studying and Living in Perth,Western Australia
Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia
(WA), and is one of the top twenty most livable cities in the world (according
to The Economist’s World’s Most Livable Cities 2010). With a population of 1.6
million, Perth is the fourth most populous city in Australia and continuously
growing. Perth has a high standard of living, while remaining affordable to
international students. People of more than 200 different nationalities live,
work and study here, speaking over 170 languages, making WA the most
multicultural state in Australia.
Western Australian people can be described as laid-back and friendly, and
will tell you that their state offers the best lifestyle in the world. They love the
outdoors, participating in sport, picnics and the famous Aussie barbecue, and
taking advantage of Perth’s pleasant Mediterranean climate, famous for its long
days of sunshine and clear blue skies. From the wineries of Margaret River to
the beaches of Cottesloe and Scarborough to the nightlife of Northbridge, WA
offers something for every taste.
Perth offers one of the highest standards of living in the world, and yet is more
affordable than the UK and the USA. Perth is Western Australia’s cultural hub
for arts and entertainment. Visit the traditional and contemporary art galleries,
enjoy a night of theatre, ballet, comedy or film, and take advantage of Perth’s
amazing weather by enjoying the city’s outdoor music festivals. Perth’s standard
time zone is GMT +8. There is no daylight saving in WA.
Living Expenses and School Age Dependents
Australian government provides an indicative guideline which is approximately
A$18,610 per year to cover living expenses for a single person. Costs can be
expected to increase by at least 35% if you have a spouse and a further 20%
if you have one child. The cost of schooling for your child will be an additional
$8,000 per year. Each additional child will add a further 15% plus $8,000 per
child per year for schooling. All school age dependents who accompany or later
join you in Australia will be required to pay full fees on each child’s enrolment in
either a government or non-government school.
