L.C.V.I Art Department Intaglio print GRADE 9 OPEN INTAGLIO PRINT Printmaking: Intaglio Due date: Word wall: Relief What is printmaking? Edition Line An original print is an image on paper or similar material made by one or more of the processes described here. Each medium has a special, identifiable quality, but because more than one impression of each image is possible, "original" does not mean "unique." Assignment: Assignment: 1 Background 2 Plan 2 Rubric 3 of prints made of one image is an edition. The number may appear on the print with the individual print number as a fraction such as 5/25 meaning that this particular print is number 5 of 25 prints made. Prints in color require two or more blocks, plates, screens or stones, one for each color, printed sequentially on top of each other to produce the final work of art. This process is called registration. . Prints are multiple originals. The development of printmaking was connected to the development of movable type and the printing press in the fifteenth century, although woodblock printing had been done on textiles since ancient times. In contemporary printmaking, artists frequently number their prints. The total number Assignment criteria: Using one of the homework sketches as a base, design, develop and print an edition of prints (Minimum of 3 prints) .. All techniques and printing technology will be demonstrated. Remember that the key is the unlimited detail that these forms of graphic art permits. 3 of the most consistent or similar prints will be signed and handed in for evaluation according to the traditions in printmaking, means that you will need to print more than the required number of prints. Your print needs to be clean along the edges. Remember to “sign” your print in pencil. (Use a sharp pencil. Edition/title/name-date ) Page 2 Intaglio print Intaglio: Intaglio: is the family of printing and printmaking techniques in which the image is incised into a surface, and the incised line or sunken area holds the ink. It is the direct opposite of a relief print. Depressions are cut into a printing plate. Normally, copper or zinc plates are used as a surface or matrix, and the incisions are created by etching, engraving, dry point, aquatint or mezzotint. The transfer of this design onto paper is achieved by inking the surface with typographic ink and applying pressure with a press. The ink is wiped off the plate., but remains in the grooves The Tools and safety Damp paper is placed on the plate and compressed, such as by a heavy roller or printing press You will be using three different types of tools: Needle Knives Materials to wipe the plate with Spray bottle The paper is removed, and the ink has been transferred We will be using oil based ink from the plate to the paper Keep your fingers clean and separate the work stations. The Edition 1/10 “Title” name/date The concept of "edition" is basic to the world of serial art. It is the "limited edition" which permits printmakers and collectors to agree upon what is an original art print and what is a mere reproduction. •The print has to be signed with a pencil. •Artist’s proof A.P. Used instead of an edition number. This is often a TEST print made by a printmaker before beginning an edition. A printmaker might sign up to 5 extra prints “A.P.” and sell them (often at a reduced price). Printmaking: Intaglio Page 3 Studio Action: Create a fantastic hybrid: a "critter" that is part organic, part t inorganic. You can start by selecting an animal or insect: Look at it and see if a tool comes to mind. What kind of tool might this creature need? What skill does a creature have that might be transferred onto a tool/ mechanical object? Make a two column list and place creatures in one column and tools in the other when done consider what each tool would look like or impact each of the creature. Use the attached work sheet for your plate . Please explain your concept in the bow below. My concept: "Make an impression... be a printmaker!"
