February at Sew Special Network
Submitted by Bonnie Perkins, Director
Well I hope all had a good holiday. We’ve
had a mild winter so far and I hope it keeps up.
For March we want to remind you of the Sewing
Smorgasbord in Thornville. It is located about 10
miles south of Newark on Route 79. They will
be offering classes and more information. Visit
www.perry.osu.edu/news and click on 2016 Sewing Smorgasbord. Save the date March 19, 2016.
Hours are 8:30am to 3:00 pm. They will be having
a Decorated Sweatshirt or T-shirt contest.
If you would like more information, you may
contact Cindy at 740-743-1602 or email her at
shuster.24@osu.edu. Several of us went last year
and it was very informative and a lot of fun.
If you find yourself with cabin fever or just
want to visit with others while making a positive
impact for others we can use some volunteers to
sew, knit, organize or even craft some. We make
items for our retail store and to donate to seniors
in Knox County.
Remember, we gratefully accept any fabrics,
buttons, thread, interfacing, fiberfill, zippers, trims,
yarns, knitting needles or crochet needles; we use
them to make our donated items for agencies. All
donations are tax deductible just request a form.
Any donation that doesn’t fit with our sewing
projects in the shop is donated to Christian Aid
Ministries – an organization that sends fabrics &
notions overseas for young girls to learn to sew.
So, you see, we make good use of your donations!
Thank you all.
Fifteen-year-old AV resident Ben Miller is
the top e-birder for AV hotspots and the number two e-birder for all of Knox County. He’s
three species away from a tie for first place for
the county e-bird count.
While Miller has six of AV’s nine e-bird
hotspots all to himself, including Bennett Park,
so far submitting all the sightings in those spots
himself, he faces competition on AV Lake and
the Clubhouse area. On AV Lake, he remains
number one, in the face of friendly competition,
really cooperation, from six other birdwatchers,
including myself in third place and his grandmother, Diana, in seventh place.
E-bird hotspots are places regularly frequented by birdwatchers who request they be added to
the e-bird list (www.ebird.org) of hotspots, regardless of how many or how few species have
been seen there.
Miller is a serious birdwatcher and photographer, who had his photos of a yellow-bellied
sapsucker and vireo published in a recent issue
of the Cider Press.
21
Submitted by Don Comis
The bird counts for the AV hotspots were
done mostly between October 27, 2012 and November 30, 2015. In total the original birdwatchers identified 81 species. I recently merged my
generic AV Lake e-bird reports into their AV
Lake location bringing the species total to 83. I
also added two of my favorite AV birdwatching
spots as hotspots, the Clubhouse area and Sutton
Beach, raising the species total to 92. This enabled Miller to merge his Clubhouse e-bird list
into the Clubhouse hotspot I created recently,
adding 6 more species, including the yellow-bellied sapsucker, bringing the total to 98.
Miller only needs to identify six more species
in the Clubhouse area to “beat” me and I’m sure
he will. The only reason I’m ahead of him now
is that I live near there and started two years earlier than he did.
But this is, as I said earlier, really about cooperation. We’re all expanding the e-bird count in
AV and the rest of the county, part of a vast network of birdwatchers building a citizen science
database on birds to the benefit of land managSee BIRDS continued on pg. 25

How to Reduce Theft From Your Vehicle
Lock your doors
It’s common sense, yet we hear about it all the time.
While this piece of advice should be a no-brainer, up
to a quarter of vehicle thefts are from unlocked cars,
according to some law enforcement agencies. Even if
you’re vehicle is just a few feet away from your home,
or you’re running into the store for a Coke, that’s too
long to leave your vehicle’s contents open for the taking.
Simply locking the doors will deter those who might
just be waiting around for an easy target.
Close all windows completely
Not only could someone reach through the gap to
open the lock with a door hanger, but the pressure sensor
could be disabled in a car alarm. This leaves a car vulnerable and gives the bad guy more time to steal your
stuff, or the whole car.
Get an alarm
If you don’t have an alarm system, get one. The
noise alone may be enough to scare away an inexperienced thief and prevent the break-in. Factory-option
alarm systems are generally best, but a carefully installed, properly calibrated aftermarket system can provide just as much safety. Beware, many less-expensive
new cars have remote entry but not a true alarm. Also,
remember to be neighborly and respond to the alarm
promptly should it be set off.
Be alert of your surroundings and people near
your vehicle as well as your neighbors. If there are
any suspicious persons or occupied vehicles hanging
around a parked vehicle, contact you local law enforcement.
Lighting
If your car is stored in a carport or parked near your
house, leave your exterior lights (front and back) on
throughout the night. Consider replacing the light fixture closest to your car with a motion detector unit. The
light will be off routinely, but will activate if your car is
approached.
Be sure to remove automatic garage door openers
from the car, as this could give a thief easy access to
your house.
Tidy up
A thief could see that useless, empty shopping bag
in your car and think there’s something valuable inside.
By keeping your car free of trash or miscellaneous
items, a thief has less of a reason to snoop inside. The
interest subsides.

Ex-ambassador in Balkan Conflict to Talk
at Kenyon About Modern Diplomacy
GAMBIER, Ohio — Former Ambassador James Pardew, who
helped negotiate the end of wars in the former Yugoslavia, will talk
Feb. 2 at Kenyon College about how his insights apply to 21st century foreign policy, including the conflict in Syria.
The speech at 7 p.m. in the Community Foundation Theater in
the Gund Gallery, 101½ College Drive, is open to the public.
Pardew, who later in his career was ambassador to Bulgaria, will
discuss the nature of ethnic conflicts, drawing on his experiences on
the front lines of U.S.-led efforts to stop religious and ethnic fighting and genocide in the Balkans.
acqueline McAllister, assistant professor of political science,
invited the diplomat to campus when she interviewed him for research on the effect of international crime tribunals in Southeastern
Europe.
The U.S., coming out of the Cold War with great power, learned pivotal lessons about resolving
civil wars from the Balkan conflicts, she said. The country was slow to get involved in the wars
from 1991 to 2001 that led to the breakup of Yugoslavia, but President Bill Clinton’s administration
was pressured to act as the conflicts wore on and genocide escalated. “From the United States’ failures and successes, we’ve derived a lot of lessons about how to handle conflict in the present day,”
McAllister said.
With the Bosnian War, many parties fought over religious identity, and the U.S. at first took a
hands-off approach, worried that the conflict was too vicious and that negotiators couldn’t solve
ancient hatred over religion and ethnicity, McAllister said. “That’s very similar to what’s going on
now,” she said. “The Bosnian conflict has a lot of echoes to the Syrian conflict.”
