o it’s finally here, the big anniversary. It’s officially been a year
since the Beijing Olympics. But you all know that by now, so
we’ll stop prattling on about it.
What August 8, 2009 means for Beijing sport is a popularity
contest between domestic football and the flashy come-hither looks
of Italy’s Serie A. The Supercoppa Italiana takes place that day in
the Bird’s Nest. It’s the first time anyone has seen fit to put on a
sports contest in the National Stadium since the marathoners crossed
the finish line before the Closing Ceremony. Meanwhile, across town
in the Workers’ Stadium, Beijing Guoan take on Changsha Ginde
in their battle to win a first CSL title. So which event will win out?
Will it be the most popular team in China, Inter Milan, taking
on Lazio in a meaningless yet star-studded curtain raiser for the
upcoming Italian season? More than likely, but if you’re not going
to that, you really ought to go and see Guoan’s title challenge while
it still lasts, and here’s hoping it does.
Had enough of football? Tough. The season may seem like it just
finished in Europe but that means it’s about to restart. Your weekends
will soon have a purpose. Or you can watch England’s cricketers
crumble against Australia in the Ashes or the tri-nations rugby
series between South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
One man who might have time to do that is Yao Ming. He’s not
played since picking up a hairline fracture in his foot in a May 8
playoff game. NBA sources have revealed that this is likely to keep
him out of the whole 2009-10 season, and speculation persists that
it may well be a longer, career-ending layoff. I’m sure Yao would be
much happier still being able to play.
You’ve no such excuse. Where’s your hairline fracture? What are
you waiting for? Too hot, you say? Just get through the month, and
then the weather will be perfect to start playing outdoor sports again.
In the meantime, you’ve a month left of sailing action with Beijing
Sailing Center, plenty of time to swim at venues all around the
city and a reason to take up Ultimate Frisbee. Still not convinced?
Flick back to our cover feature (p24) and you’ll see plenty of other
opportunities to get sporty in the venues that made history last year.

became home to the world’s biggest skatepark, a young Beijing boy named
Zuochen begged his father to build him a
skateboard out of an old two-by-four and a
roller skate.
Like Zuochen, most of China’s first
skaters were limited to either homemade
creations or toys that would break in a matter
of days. Still, for Chinese youth in the late
‘80s, the allure of a sport brimming with
rebellion and pop culture was hard to resist.
By 1989, a handful of local Beijing teens had
formed China’s first group of skaters. “We
didn’t have a name, we didn’t need to be a
team,” says Baozi, who now runs Tour Skateshop. “We were just a bunch of kids who got
together to skate to have a good time.”
W h i le Baozi and Zuochen were
cruising the streets of Beijing, a breakthrough arrived in the early ’90s with US
skate company Powell Peralta, which put
real skateboards on the Chinese market for
the first time. “Back then, boards were incredibly expensive,” Baozi recollects. “They
cost 360 kuai at a time when a monthly
salary was between 160-180 kuai. Hardly
anyone could afford one.”
The young Chinese skate scene orbited
around the Powell headquarters in Qinghuangdao, where the Great Wall meets
the ocean. Every summer, skaters flocked
in from around the country to participate
in Powell’s competitions, and members of
the infamous Powell Bones Brigade skate
team stopped by to hold demos. Qingdao
skater Andrew Guan remembers it well: “In
1997, Mike Vallely and Stacey Lowery came.
Everyone who skateboarded in China came
out to get their pictures taken with them!”
says Guan, who now runs a Chinese skateboarding website, Kickerclub.com.
As little plastic wheels began to rumble
across the country’s pavement, the market
opened up, and shrewd domestic manufacturers took notice. The owner of a ping-pong
paddle company, inspired by his skateboarder
son, used his wood laminate factory to churn
out cheap, low-quality skateboard decks.
The boards sold well, and the Chinese skate
company Justice was born.
As skateboarding grew more lucrative,

the government sought to place it under the
jurisdiction of a state-run sports bureau.
The rollerskating, watersports, and bicycle
associations all fought for control. The
watersports association eventually won out
in 2002 with the claim that skateboarding
derived from surfing, and was therefore a
watersport. They now control the ranking of
skaters; any competition that wants its results
to count toward ranking must go through
them, allowing them both profit from and
control over competitions.
In 1992, Beijing’s first local skateshop,
Xiang Yun, opened its doors. A few years
later, owner Sun Hu moved the operation
next to Ditan Park where he opened a
skatepark called Fantastic Wheels (Qimao
Lunhua). “It had a street course, a rail, a
spine, a mini-ramp, and a vert-ramp,” recalls
Raph Cooper, who runs Society Skateboards,
the first producer of high-quality, durable
Chinese skateboards. But as all good things
must come to an end – especially if they
occupy prime real estate in the heart of
Beijing – the Ditan skate park was torn down
in 2000.

“Beijing skaters are different from US
skaters,” says Guan. “In the states, skaters are
always looking for new spots to skate. Here,
it’s more about the community. Sure, there are
several other skate spots in town, but most of
the local skaters will get off work and head to
the church to socialize and relax as much as
to skate,” he adds.
“There’s probably over 1,000 skaters
in Beijing now,” says Xuyin, who rides for
Society. But when asked how many of them
are actually any good, Xuyin smiles. “ Maybe
ten,” he says.
While skaters kick back, sharing beers
and stories outside St. Joseph’s, a cutthroat
undercurrent flows through the business
end of the sport. Instead of local shops
cooperating to carry a variety of brands, a
brand-name turf war has developed over who
gets to sell what. “When we started Society,”
says Cooper, “we were thinking we’re cool
with [the local skateshop owners], we’ll put

our stuff in all of their stores and it’ll be
dope. But if we put our stuff in [one] shop,
[another] doesn’t want it.” In a market so
dominated by haggling, and where much of
the US product, although authentic, comes
from dubious origins, the only way shop
owners manage to keep the price of a brand
up is to keep a monopoly on it. The fight
over labels can even get violent. Recently,
a local skater who was selling product for
the Independent label encountered another
skater who was doing the same. He hurt the
kid so badly, he got jail time.
Though this kind of violence is seldom
seen, skaters are tagged with a negative reputation that can make finding employment
hard. “In the US you have Tony Hawk, Ryan
Sheckler, Rob Dyrdek,” says Guan, “but in
China, there’s no Yao Ming of skateboarding, so a lot of people think skaters are just
little punks.” Guan cites Shenzhen pro-skater
Wang Huifeng as an example. Wang was an
honest, shy kid but because he skateboarded,
school authorities picked on him, singling
him out; eventually, he was kicked out of
middle school for refusing to cut his hair.
While individuals struggle, the larger
skate scene in China is gaining momentum.
Danny Way’s infamous jump over the Great
Wall in 2005 put China on skateboarding’s
world map, and soon after, the Australian
company Sex, Money, Power (SMP) built
the world’s biggest skatepark in Shanghai
– and while that may be like throwing shark
bait into a goldfish tank, it speaks volumes
of the huge interest China’s skate scene has
sparked internationally.
Camp Woodward, the famous skateboard
training center with four locations in the US,
is just finishing up construction on its first
international facility – right here in Beijing.
It’s set to open by year’s end. “After the
Olympics, everybody knows Beijing. It’s a big
name, and a big city, it seemed like the best
place,” says Woodward’s marketing manager,
Max Chen. The high cost of the camp (about
RMB 3,000 per week) will block out a huge
percentage of Chinese skaters as Powell’s
price tags used to, but the support the
company will provide can be nothing but
good for Beijing skaters. After all, if you
build it, they’ll find a way to skate it.
