POLYTECHNIC OF NAMIBIA COLL CAREER MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT (CMD812S) ASSIGNMENT 1 REPORT – 2015 QUESTION 1: REFLECTIONS OF HOW DIFFERENT PEOPLE IN THE CASE STUDY VIEW THE ROLE OF WORK IN THEIR LIVES. AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WORK IN MY OWN LIFE. HOW MY EXPERIENCES COMPARE WITH THAT OF OTHERS. 1. African female - Work is meaningful when it brings a balance between organisation and individual expectations – balance in the psychological contract (there should be equilibrium between the expectations of the employer and the employee) - Works seen as a creative experience and a deeply valued pursuit; hardships could be encountered at work but they are of no significance if the work is pleasing and satisfying. 2. African female 2 Work enables one to use truthful/honest parts of self. Her concern is what she does now than what happens in the future. Takes work as a fulfilling expression of what she really is as an individual. Challenges such as pressures faced, demanding time, financial difficulties are of no significance as long as her work is fulfilling. 3. African woman 3 Work provides synergy of skills she prefers using; work gives one contentment and brings out one’s authentic self as the work reflects the true identity of the individual. 4. White female Work provides a sense of responsibility, satisfaction and accomplishment. 5. African male 1 If one possesses skills, knowledge and abilities one gets employability; work is a means of earning a living; it makes one feel valuable and useful in society. 6. African woman 4 Work can change people’s lives and makes society affords one respect 7. African male 2 Work serves a deeper underlying purpose – it satisfies the body and soul; it provides one with self-esteem and a sense of pride, and sense of independence; it serves a spiritual fulfilment 8. White female 2 Work can be a creative experience, deeply value pursuit and gives personal and social identity though one has to love what one does. 9. White female 3 It is a dream one wants to live; it is a goal that one pursues; it is a choice of actions that represent beliefs and a way that one uses to express one’s beliefs in life. It allows one to express make a difference in society. 10. White female 4 Work means belonging to something bigger than self; it can make you feel a sense of belonging; it is a means to an income, to have a family and live a pleasurable life, happiness and adventure. 11. White female It is a means with which to add value in other people’s lives; a means with which to makes a difference in other people’s lives; this makes one feel fulfilled. Work enables one to add value to the organisation bottom line. It gives meaning to life to one who loves doing it. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WORK IN MY OWN LIFE AND MY WORK EXPERIENCES COMPARE TO THAT OF OTHERS. (An open question, but must be given along the lines of testimonies given above.) QUESTION 2: DIFFENTIATION BETWEEN A CAREER AND A JOB In most cases the discussion below describes what a job is not. A job would describe a single occupation in one’s work-life. - A career is unique to each person and is created from an individual person choses or does not choose A career is more than a single job, a single position, or a single role A career is dynamic and forms a coherent, interconnected journey from one vocational experience to another - - A career is a developmental process progression which unfolds throughout life A career is planned, organised and managed so that the path is one of growth, which ensures that new roles build on previous experience A career reflects a person’s development across the life span through the integration of life and vocational roles, settings and events in a person’s life A person’s career includes not only occupations but also pre-vocational and post-vocational concerns, as well as the integration of work with other in other life roles such as family, community and leisure A person’s career provides social meaning to his/her life, his/her career needs to be understood in the context of his/her personal and vocational identities, particularly his/her social cultural environment. (8 x 1 = 8 plus 2 marks for discussing) QUESTION 3: THEMES RELATING TO CAREER AND CAREER MEANINGFULLNESS. THEMES IN THE TABLE THAT DESCRIBE MY PERCEPTION OF CAREER SUCCESS AND CAREER MEANINGFULNESS; THEMES THAT I ADD AND WHY? (An open question to all students; students chose how to answer it by extracting answers from the given table and coming with reasonable arguments justifies their choices and showing that they have a full grasp of the subject under discussion.
