Since carbon steel is harder than stainless steel, carbon steel instruments will maintain a sharper edge longer and require less sharpening than stainless steel instruments. However, carbon steel instruments require additional care during the cleaning and sterilization process to avoid corrosion issues. As such, we recommend the following carbon steel care guidelines: 1. C arbon Steel instruments should not stand in wet conditions or cold sterile for prolonged periods. If an ultrasonic cleaner is used, only use solutions that contain a corrosion inhibitor. Please follow the manufacturer’s instructions concerning solution dilution and the length of time the instruments are left in the cleaner. 2. If a steam autoclave is used for sterilization, a corrosion inhibitor must be used before the instruments are loaded into the autoclave. Hartzell carries two products to inhibit corrosion: • Corrosion Inhibitor - an additive to the autoclave make-up water (Product #CI) • Surgical Milk - an instrument dip that works well with certain cassette-type steam autoclaves (Product #MILK) The steam autoclave must be vented and/or run on a drying cycle. 3. Non-liquid-based sterilization (dry-heat, chemiclave, etc.) does not require any additional steps for carbon-steel instrument sterilization.
