On behalf of the AMAF board I would again like to thank everyone who was involved in some way to make the Provincial Finals such a great weekend. Thanks to all of the volunteers who stepped up and were willing to tackle anything they were needed to do. We are especially grateful to the volunteers of the Winnipeg Music Festival who came in on the Saturday of the Finals to free the AMAF board to have a meeting in the morning and also give the board members the opportunity to attend the speech arts workshop in the afternoon. And then this event wouldn’t happen at all with out the long hours of preparation and organization of Somer Kenny and Joanne Mercier in the AMAF office, assisted by Andrew Rampton of the Winnipeg Music Festival office. Not only did they put in many hours before and after the Provincial Finals weekend, but were around all weekend to answer questions, give assistance where ever needed and keep the event flowing smoothly. Thank-you! I congratulate all of the performers who achieved a first or second place standing but more importantly, I trust that everyone who performed at the Provincial Finals came away with more knowledge about their craft and themselves then when they went in. The purpose of the Provincial Finals is not only to showcase some of the finest young talent in our province but also to provide another valuable learning experience for them. Congratulations to the musicians that will represent Manitoba at the National Music Festival in Saskatoon August 13 – 15, 2009. As always, we are confident that they will make a good showing and do our province proud! I wish all of you a wonderful, relaxing summer and then an exciting fall season as we gear up to make each of our local festivals better then ever! Cyndy Warkentin AMAF President OFFICE HOURS Monday - Friday ADVERTISING Advertising space is available in Focus on Festivals and the Provincial Finals Program. Contact the AMAF office for details. 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. AMAF would ask that anyone planning to visit the office, call or email ahead to confirm that someone will be there to meet you. As there is only one staff person and there are times when she needs to leave the building to conduct business, it is important to make arrangements in advance. We also request that if you are planning to pick up supplies that you inform the office of what you need several days in advance. In order to be cost effective some materials are produced on an “as needed” basis and we would hate for anyone to be disappointed when they arrive. 3 2009 PROVINCIAL MUSIC & SPEECH ARTS FINALS RESULTS The following are the results of the 2009 Provincial Music & Speech Arts Finals that took place May 22nd – 24th at Canadian Mennonite University. The Speech Arts Workshop was open to all interested individuals. It not only provided students with an opportunity to work with Jennifer Orr, a speech arts specialist from Mount Royal College in Calgary, but it was also provided information and guidance to parents, teachers and festival organizers so that they may be better equipped to promote speech arts in their communities and support/coach the students who are involved. A total of fourteen individuals registered for the workshop. It was also attended by several members of the AMAF board of directors. The second workshop was for students interested in music composition. Three students registered and brought with them one or more compositions in progress. Each participant performed their work(s) and the workshop facilitator, Manitoba Composers, Maryanne Rumancik led the group in a discussion of each piece and explored ways of strengthening them. The students were given some instruction on how and where to begin when trying to put a musical idea down on paper and properly notate their work. The group also reviewed a number of sample pieces and discussed the strengths and weaknesses of each as well as ways in which they could be further developed. At the participants’ request, there was also a discussion on the use of technology, i.e. music notation software. Jennifer Orr Speech Arts Adjudicator & Workshop Facilitator Both of these workshops were very successful. AMAF plans to continue offering similar workshops annually. If so, your festival can nominate that person for an "Honorary Life Membership", to be voted on and conferred in a special ceremony at the AMAF Annual General Meeting. Honorary Life Members receive a suitably engraved keepsake as well as recognition in AMAF publications. Honorary Life Members are entitled to receive relevant correspondence such as newsletters, notices of meetings and special events. They may attend the Annual General and Special General Meetings as a non-voting member, at no cost to AMAF and do not pay an annual fee. The nomination must be made in writing with letters of support from two or more Festivals and/or AMAF Board Members. Your letter of nomination should describe the contribution made by that individual - in other words, why you feel he/she deserves this honour. Nominations must be received in the AMAF office by August 1st. For additional information on nominating an Honorary Life Member – call the AMAF office at 945-4578.
