Work is both mentally and physically demanding. Pilots sit in the airplane cockpit, which is usually cramped and noisy. May experience jet lag from changing time zones. May be away from their home base for long periods of time. Many experience irregular working, eating, and sleeping schedules. The amount of flight time varies by the type of employer. Airplane cockpits are cramped and noisy. Near and far vision are required in addition to color vision and depth perception. See objects in very bright or very dim light. Reach with hands and feet to operate aircraft controls. Need eye-hand-foot coordination. Need quick reaction time. Strength to load luggage when flying small planes. Exposed to toxic chemicals, especially when spraying insecticides over fields. Speak clearly and hear well. Stress is caused by unexpected events, such as mechanical malfunctions, weather, terrorism, and unruly passengers. Risks include death to self and passengers.
