Work Environment and Physical Demands
Occupations often can be performed by those with disabilities when provided with appropriate adaptations.
 Work is both mentally and physically demanding.
 Pilots sit in the airplane cockpit, which is usually cramped and noisy.
 May experience jet lag from changing time zones.
 May be away from their home base for long periods of time.
 Many experience irregular working, eating, and sleeping schedules.
 The amount of flight time varies by the type of employer.
 Airplane cockpits are cramped and noisy.
 Near and far vision are required in addition to color vision and depth perception.
 See objects in very bright or very dim light.
 Reach with hands and feet to operate aircraft controls.
 Need eye-hand-foot coordination.
 Need quick reaction time.
 Strength to load luggage when flying small planes.
 Exposed to toxic chemicals, especially when spraying insecticides over fields.
 Speak clearly and hear well.
 Stress is caused by unexpected events, such as mechanical malfunctions, weather, terrorism, and unruly passengers. Risks include death to self and
passengers.
 Need to keep your cool when conditions are stressful.
