Explored from the lower half of the Mountain Basin , through the southern half of the Great Plains, and finally through the southern half of the Coastal Plains. He explored the New World. Indians helped him when he was on his death bed. He lived with the Indians in the Missions and even dressed like them in their clothing. Appalled by the Spanish treatment of the Indians and urged more generous policies towards them. Fransisco Vasquez de Coronado 1510-1554 Never found any riches or gold. Explored Northern Texas near the Pan Handle. Explored the New World. Searched for the Seven Cities of Gold. Never found the Seven Cities of Gold. He represented Spain. Spain hired him to explore Texas to try and find gold, claim new territory or land, and to spread their Religion. Robert Cavelier de la Salle 1643-1687 Explored the Eastern part of Texas or the Northern part of the Coastal Plains. Explored the New World. Jose de Escandon Between 1748 and 1755 he founded the cities: Carmargo Loredo Reynosa Rio Grande He is known as the “father of the lower Rio Grande Valley. Missions Catholic priest estabilish the mission. Mission and their environment the needs of the indian people and priest who lived on them. Catholic missions because they wanted to spreed christianity and estabilish permanet settlements Spanish missions were started in all the Texas reigons Except the Central plains. Lumber was used by the mission people to build fences around the missions for protection from Native Americans. If a mission was successful it would turn into a town or a city. There was no rain for long periods of time so the mission population would built irrigation ditches to help water the crops. These irrigation ditches held the rain in them when it did fall . Mission were self sustainable that means they took care of themselves by growing their own crops , raising their own livestock ,(cows , chicken , pigs ) and making their own clothing.
