BINGO LAND Stories from the Real World & Cyberspace By Jeffrey Charboneau Special to the Bingo Bugle This month: Mother leaves kids alone to play Bingo Bingo Studies It could be years before a Bingo parlor opens near Shabbona, Illinois, but the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Indian tribe has moved one step closer to doing so. The U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs held a public forum in January at the Kishwaukee College Conference Center in Malta, the first step in crafting an environmental impact study and an impact statement on the tribe’s plans to bring Class II gaming to the area. Residents and other stakeholders had the opportunity to speak at the meeting. Federal representatives will use the information to gauge what benefits or distress the gaming, primarily Bingo, will have on Shabbona and the region. The environmental impact study, which the tribe pays for, could take up to two years to complete. Anything for Bingo Morgan City, Louisiana, police have charged a woman with child desertion after police found her three children, ages 10, 6 and 1, at home alone. Police were called to the home to investigate a barking dog. The officers arrived and heard what sounded like a small child or baby crying inside. They tried the door and it was not secure, even though the temperature was in the 40s. The officers then entered the home be- cause of the circumstances, and found the three children alone. The officers were told the mother was out playing Bingo. While they were speaking to the children, she arrived home. Police say she left the children home alone for more than an hour. Senior Fundraiser Karaoke Bingo returned to the Kent Parks Deli and Café in February. The popular fundraiser offered lunch patrons the opportunity to contribute any amount to help defray costs of the Kent, Washington, Senior Activity Center lunch program. A $5 entry fee included lunch, karaoke group sing-alongs and Bingo games. Gift card Bingo prizes, valued from $25 to $150, were provided by the Talbot Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare. Caller on The Voice Bingo caller Brooklynne Richards made it through to the first round of the British version of the TV talent show, The Voice. She was delighted when judges Boy George and Ricky Wilson turned their chairs for her on the BBC-1 show, after she sang Cry to Me by Solomon Burke. She chose the song because it’s from her favorite film, Dirty Dancing. Boy George of Culture Club was keen to coach Richards, Continued on Page 5 Bingo Happenings Local Bingo Events & Great Specials Vee Quiva will have a St Patrick’s Day Bingo on Thursday, March 17th when everyone will receive a Free dauber, plus they’ll have some special games, at their evening session. The decorations are something special. Shamrocks abound as do balloons, streamers, and big cartoons. The cartoons have a place in the Bingo games so they are important to study and keep in mind. First everyone is greeted cheerfully and given a necklace of paper shamrocks. Then the games are conditioned to the holiday. First we play shamrock—which is the same as the Indian star. Then onto swords—which is two straight lines on a card. I was on that time and got pretty excited, but no win. Then we play some ordinary games, and just before intermission comes the “cartoon.” St. Patrick is reputed to have driven the snakes from Ireland, so the next game is about snakes. In a jagged line from left to right, we look for a Bingo that goes up from the lower left corner, then down in the center, up again in the G row, then up still further in the O. It is not a hard one to play, it is getting the hang of it that is the challenge. At intermission we each had an Irish doughnut, which is a regular powdered sugar doughnut with onion jam in the center. I really like onion jam but it is not for everyone’s taste. It is said to have originated in Ireland, those folks having run out of berries and other fruit for jam. We gathered our stuff together for the second half of play when there was a great bustle at the door and a man dressed as St. Patrick came roaring in. He was like Santa Claus in distributing small bundles here and there and finally approaching our table. “Are these the Bingo Sisters?” he roared, and when we assented, he grabbed us, each by a forearm and marched us to the caller’s stand. “What do you have to say for yourselves?” he yelled. “Are you winning tonight?” “Not yet,” I said, “but my hopes are high.” I was very embarrassed as was Kate, but we were determined to be good sports. “You must do something special to entertain these good folk,” roared St. Patrick. Kate looked bewildered so I came to the rescue. “I’d like to propose a special game,” I said tentatively. “Let’s play the dragon.” I then outlined a game that was essentially a blackout lacking three numbers. “Great!” roared the giant and he returned us to our seats. It was a tricky game to play, but we soldiered on, enjoying the fun of being good sports without actually having to do anything special. Kate won and we happily took home our winnings, saying St. Patrick’s Day is the best ever holiday. phoeniX edition A monthly publication of Media Resources, Inc. Rosser St., Prescott Rosser St. 89 69 www.adultcenter.org I know that a lot of Bingo halls use a wide variety of games in order to make the session more exciting. But, I think that things have gotten out of hand. Recently I played Bingo at a hall where every game seemed to have a strange pattern you had to cover to win. What ever happened to NORMAL Bingo…you know, five numbers in a row, horizontal, vertical, diagonal. Or DOUBLE Bingo. Or TRIPLE Bingo. Now, if you are a regular at one of these halls that uses complex patterns, you might eventually get the hang of it. If you are playing an electronic machine it doesn’t matter. But, speaking as a PAPER PLAYER, this is ridiculous! At this particular hall, not only were the patterns strange and foreign to me, some games allowed you to Bingo one of several ways. Now, even though I am so dyslexic that I can only play a single 6-on card, I kept wondering if I actually had a Bingo and didn’t know about it. Additionally, this was a hall with a mumbling caller; once I was playing the wrong game because I did not hear thursday night bingo See You There!!!! BASELINE in Prescott Valley (928) 772-3337 www.casapv.net Let’s keep it simple, please the announcement. Before the regular session the hall had six “Early Bird” games. All were DOUBLE Bingo. At least I THOUGHT they were all the same. Somebody in management decided that the final game should be the letter “X” for the win. Assuming I had won, because I had a DOUBLE Bingo, I shouted “BINGO!!” I was told by the runner that I had NOT won. It was an “X” in that game. Why? Why the exception? I really think that Bingo halls need to realize that not everyone is a “regular.” Secondly, not every player is playing a machine. And, maybe most importantly, some of those playing are there for the first time. This is especially critical in big cities, such as Vegas. I really wasted my money at the session. Many times I was not sure what was going on. It was a combination of silly, hard-to-understand games, hardto-understand callers, strange game order and a lack of sensitivity to the needs of people who had never played there before. Does that kind of situation sound familiar to you? I welcome your comments to: bobonbingo@earthlink.net. Let’s end on a positive note. My special congratulations to a woman who is a caller at one of the smaller halls in Las Vegas. She actually said: “50 numbers or FEWER.” Can you believe it? After 15 years of pleading in this column to stop saying “less” and start saying “fewer,” some sweet woman complied. If I could remember her name, I’d send her flowers. Next time around: E-mail from you. SPRINGWOOD SIGNAL BUTTE Barbara and Rose are great friends and Sunday regulars at Knights of Columbus 11809. Your first port of call, St. Maarten, is a unique destination in that it is a single island which has been shared by France and The Netherlands for more than three-and-a-half years. The divide is virtually imperceptible, and people cross back and forth without ever realizing they are entering a new country. Yet each side has managed to retain much of the distinctiveness of its homeland. Dutch St. Maarten, with its busy cruise port and bustling commercial district, has long been an active center for trade and tourism. More developed and at the same time more informal, it is very Dutch in flavor. French St. Martin emphasizes comfort and seclusion. The luxury resorts found there provide lavish accommodations, and the restaurants offer some of the finest dining experiences anywhere in the Caribbean. Between the cultures of St. Maarten and St. Martin, tournament players will find just about every kind of distraction possible for a perfect getaway. Activities in St. Maarten include deep-sea fishing, diving, snorkeling, sailing, water sports, hiking, horseback riding and other outdoor activities. Duty-free shopping is available on both sides of the island. Luxury items from all over the world, European fashions, Indonesian batiks and Chinese embroidery, jewelry, leather, crystal, liquors, and fine porcelain, free of all taxes and customs, are regularly offered at bargain prices. St. Maarten is home to a number of casinos, easily accessible by ground transportation from the ship. Other areas of interest include the historic fortress, Fort St. Louis; the open-air Marigot Market; Grand Case beach and village; and Orleans, the picturesque French Quarter. Enjoy the exotic beauty of the islands of the Caribbean as a participant in the World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise. Dear Brother Tom, As soon as I heard about the guy in Florida being one of the three winners in the Big Powerball Drawing, I thought of you, living way down south without your big sister nearby. Of course that was a couple months ago and you have changed your address, and your phone is disconnected. So I couldn’t send you a valentine or birthday card, but I do want you to know that I have been thinking of you a lot and I’d like to come visit you and maybe hang out for the winter. Do you have a place where I can lay my head at night? I sat with your buddy, Dave, at Bingo last night and we had a nice evening remembering old times. We laughed about how you two used to skip school and how I always covered for you with the nuns. He remembered that I always shared my ice cream cone with you and carried you piggyback when that little puppy scared you. He seemed so impressed about how I always protected you throughout the years and never let you down and always came running to bail you out of trouble. Now that we are all grown up and so much wiser, it’s fun to look back on kinder gentler years. Dave says that all your kids and their in-laws are enjoying the lovely new homes you have given them. It’s nice to have a brand new home free and clear, but I would be happy just to have a cement floor in my little cabin. I don’t worry too much about the leaky roof. I have a nice round bowl to catch the raindrops and I don’t even have to dump it. The cat drinks it. My car gets me to church and back if I have a little gas in it. Human Services just increased my food stamps so all in all I am pretty lucky I guess. I hope you don’t think I am complaining or even suggesting that you help me now that you have all those millions. I wouldn’t think of putting you in that position. I hope to see you soon. Would the cat be welcome? Playing Schedule Sundays at 1pm (doors open at 11am) Wednesday & Friday at 6:45pm (doors open at 5pm) GREENFIELD I remember to this day what a friend told me the first time I set foot in a Las Vegas casino some 50 years ago and was “scared to death” to sit down and play blackjack. “Look at all those people playing blackjack,” he said to me. “At one time they were all beginners, just like you.” Of course, he was right. Even if you are a dedicated slot machine player, learning how to play blackjack is not as difficult as you think it is. Plus think about this: Blackjack has been the most popular casino table game for over 70 years, and even today, more folks play blackjack than poker (yep, that’s true). In short, blackjack is popular because it is easy to play, it’s fun, and it offers the best odds of winning. The objective in blackjack is to beat the dealer’s hand. You can do this in one of two ways: by either having your hand totaling higher than the dealer’s hand, or by not going over 21 when the dealer subsequently goes over 21 (going over 21 is known as “busting” or “breaking”). So, if you’ve got 18 and the dealer has 17, you win. If you stand on 12 and the dealer busts, you win. The cards count their face value in blackjack. Picture cards count as 10, and an Ace counts as either 1 or 11 (initially the Ace counts as 11 but if you draw more cards, and the hand totals more than 21, then the Ace can be counted as 1). The total of any hand is the sum of the card values in the hand. For example, a hand containing a 4-5-8 totals 17 and Ace-5 is a 16. The highest-valued starting hand in blackjack (because it receives a bonus) contains an Ace plus a 10-value card, and it is known BINGO PARKCREST A crash course American Legion Post 26 EEK • PLAYING 3 DAYS A WEEK •PLAYING Blackjack as a blackjack or natural. When you win a hand at blackjack you are paid even money (i.e., if you bet $5 and win, you get paid $5). The only exception is a player’s blackjack, which gets paid either 3-2 or 6-5 (avoid all 6-5 games!) if the dealer doesn’t also have a blackjack. If your hand and the dealer’s hand have the same total, this is known as a push, or tie, and you neither win nor lose your wager. Card suits have no meaning at blackjack. Some hands in blackjack are known as soft hands and others as hard hands, and it’s important to know the distinction. Any hand that contains an Ace counted as 11 is known as a soft hand. For example, Ace-6 is a soft 17. Likewise, 2-3-Ace is a soft 16. A hard hand is any hand that either does not contain an ace, or if it does, the Ace is counted as 1. For example, 10-5-Ace is a hard 16. Oftentimes, a hand can start as a soft hand, and after receiving one or more cards, turn into a hard hand (Ace-5 is soft 16; if you hit and draw a 10, you now have a hard 16). The dealer must act on his hand by house rules (i.e., they have no playing options). If their hand totals 16 or less, they must draw another card or cards. If their hand totals 17 through 21, they must stand. In some casinos, the dealer must stand on soft 17, and in others, hit (it will say so on the layout). The odds are slightly better for players when the dealer stands on all 17s, including soft 17. The built-in house edge in blackjack arises from the simple fact that players act before the dealer, and if they bust they automatically lose, even if the dealer subsequently busts. Also, you have several playing options that are not available to the dealer, such as standing or hitting on any hand total, doubling down, pair splitting, and, in some venues, surrendering. By using these playing options optimally, you can reduce the house edge to about half of one percent! In future articles I’ll review the basic playing strategy for blackjack. 11 $900 Cards on Sale 12:15 pm - 12:45 pm Progressive Money Ball PROGRESSIVE COVERALL EACH SESSION Lighted Parking Free Coffee and Lemonade at Intermission Assorted Snacks served before the Games and at Intermission Come on down, we have a lot of fun! These things I warmly wish for you: Someone to love, some work to do; A bit o’ sun, a bit o’ cheer; And a guardian angel always near. - Irish Blessing Every year when March rolls around, my husband goes into his annual tirade regarding the wearing of orange, not green, for St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th. Why he fixates on this is beyond me, but nonetheless, he tells friends and strangers alike the meaning of the colors. As for family, they have been warned that it’s wear orange or go naked because his ancestors are Irish Protestant; the Irish Catholics wear green. If you’re neither, then the choice is yours unless you belong to our family; then, as he tells our family if they object, “Naked, it is.” When I was teaching 5th grade, I always explained the correct origin of St. Patrick’s Day as honoring Saint Patrick, a Christian missionary who became the patron saint of Ireland. Wearing green is indicative of the Irish flag, its nickname as the Emerald Isle, and the green shamrock. For most celebrants who are of legal age though, March 17th is just an excuse to drink green beer and dress up like leprechauns; and pinch those who aren’t dressed appropriately. For any of my hapless students who forgot to dress appropriately on March 17th, I kept a stack of green and orange stickers on my desk— which I applied to their forehead or cheek. They loved the facial tattoos as they called them and it saved them from going home black and blue from the pinches of their show no mercy classmates. Anyway, regardless of your preference for green or orange, did you know that all colors affect us and have an influence on the nervous system? According to researchers, colors reflect our mood, and have an effect on our memory and state of mind because of their vibrations. Yes, colors vibrate and that amazes me. Here’s a list of what some colors indicate: White- healing, calming; Red- excitement; Green- relaxation; Orange- energy. That makes sense to me on St. Pat’s Day when my husband turns red in the face (gets excited) and starts explaining why he is wearing orange (he’s full of energy and enthusiasm on this topic) when he sees others wearing green (who are more relaxed than usual due to the green beer). As for me, I believe in the power of green because it’s the color of money, woo hoo! On the other hand, when I’m playing bingo I favor wearing red. In Asian countries, no other color is believed to have as much power as red does to bring good luck. The irony of this is that when I looked up lucky colors for my December birth sign, Sagittarius, guess what I found. Sagittarius is the sign which energizes Jupiter the planet of luck, money, and growth and that the wearing of orange colors will increase these as well as improve my attitude to abundance, money, and opportunities! In other words, my wearing orange will bring me joy, fun, happiness, and more luck! Knowing that will make my husband happy; at least on March 17th. Until next month may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big, and don’t forget to tell me about it at homemailbox@roadrunner.com. It’s been fun playing cards with a handful of guys ranging from ski bums to business owners. My favorite thing about poker is that it’s a game of people, and adjusting to varying levels of play is a challenge for any poker player, professional or amateur. With pocket nines, I raised to $5 from early position. The player to my left called, as did the next player. Next to act, our friend Kurt made it $25 to go. The next few players folded, and for good reason. Kurt isn’t known to mess around, and nobody had ever seen him mess around in a spot where he faced an early position raiser and two immediate callers. Therefore, Kurt had a big hand. He started the hand with $150, and I had $327. My turn. I was certain that I had the worst hand. Assuming he was raising with a range of A-A, K-K, Q-Q and A-K, then I had a 35.8 percent chance against his range. I assumed he wouldn’t fold if I reraised to any amount. If he didn’t have queens in his range, my chances would be close to 40 percent. However, I felt it more likely that he’d omit A-K from his range, and against a range of A-A to Q-Q my chances were 19 percent. So I wasn’t raising, and I didn’t like the idea of calling with the worst hand, so folding was my best move. Unless… I thought I could get all his chips if I flopped a set. With a pair, you’ll flop a set approximately one out of eight times, so I needed to make 7-to-1 odds or better on my preflop call to be enticed into seeing a flop, knowing I was behind. His range was so strong that it seemed likely he’d be willing to get his last $125 in on most flops. It was $20 more to me, and there was $43 in the pot already. If I could get all of Kurt’s money, then I’d be risking $20 to win $168, getting odds of 8.4-to-1, better than the 7-to-1 odds I was looking for. It’s important to consider that I wouldn’t always win in instances where I flopped a set and we got our chips in. The added value helped with that some, and I thought I could define his hand a little better on the flop, so I called. I wouldn’t have minded if the other opponents called, but they both folded. Against an advanced player, I’d have folded my nines. A better player will have a more balanced three-betting range. It may be something like A-A through 10-10, A-K, A-Q and the occasional semi-bluff with something like 7-8 suited. This range is still ahead of my nines, but much tougher to play against out of position vs. a good opponent. If he sometimes has weak hands, I sometimes won’t double through him when I flop a set, because he won’t get his chips in, and therefore my diminished reward is no longer great enough for me to risk $20 to see a flop. The flop came Ks 10h 9d, giving me the set I was looking for. I checked, Kurt bet $50, and I moved all in. With Kurt having only $75 behind, there was no reason for me to do anything but shove and hope he didn’t have kings. I certainly didn’t want to call and have an ace, queen or jack peel off. He eventually called with aces. The board bricked out and I won. Irene, Roberta and Dora have been playing bingo together for 10 years. They were playing at American Legion Post 29 tonight. BINGO BUGLE Phoenix Edition March 2016 Max cards Playing it cool Hi Guy, As an older gentleman, the winter weather this year really made driving the car to get out to Bingo a problem for me. One night it would be too icy, then too snowy, then we’d get freezing rain that would flood everything…it got to the point where I was thinking I would have to stop playing Bingo until springtime. On one of these nasty nights I was flipping through an old copy of the Bingo Bugle and noticed an ad for casino bus trips. The buses had several pickup spots for riders and went to casino games that I rarely go to. (I usually stick with local charity games.) You got your choice of matinee or evening games and the trip included the bus ride and Bingo fees. I decided to try it. The ride didn’t seem to take long and there was a good-sized group on the bus, but it wasn’t crowded. (They were pretty noisy, though!) The casino was really nice and the Bingo room was great. I had a lot of fun and was so happy to be playing Bingo again after weeks away. I have been on two more bus trips since the first time and I have to say that it is an enjoyable and relaxing choice when you want someone else to do the driving. I won’t do it all the time—I still like playing Bingo in the community—but it’s nice to have in my back pocket when I don’t want to be behind the wheel. —Mark L., New York, via email Hi Mark, Good call! This winter has been a nightmare for so many of us. I, for one, lost count of the number of events I passed up because I didn’t want to brave the miserable weather and iffy road conditions. Thank heavens there are bus companies out there that put together all kinds of excursions—shopping trips, wine tours, gaming trips—that let us sit back and relax while the professionals do the driving. I hope on your next casino trip you get out of the Bingo room and try some of the other gaming the casino offers. Then again, you probably already have. —Guy Hi Guy, I went on a family trip to Las Vegas, which of course meant we went to some of the casinos to do a little gambling. My wife and I like to play Bingo occasionally, but had never tried playing in a casino Bingo room, so we decided it was time to give it a try. At the cashier, the man asked if we were playing paper or digital. Our eyes widened; neither of us had ever played electronic Bingo before. We decided to try it, and the man asked how many cards we wanted to play. My wife smiled and asked what the maximum was. Without blinking an eye, the man said 2,000 cards. We were floored. A single person willing to shell out the money could play 2,000 cards!? We tried to act cool, but I think our cover was blown when we opted to only play 20 cards. —J.R., Colorado, via email Knights of Columbus 3121 BINGO 644 E. Artichokes are in season, so it’s time to go to the market and get some thorny deliciousness for yourself. Artichokes may be a food you think you know—stripped down to its heart and frozen and packaged in a box, jar or can. But artichokes are delicious in all their forms. If you’ve never had the chance to buy them in their full, sculptural beauty, fresh off the plant, mature or young and tender, then you’re truly missing something. The artichoke is a member of the cardoon family, which is native to the Mediterranean. Cultivation began there as early as the 9th century. The artichoke likes mild, dry climates for growing, and in the United States it seems to prefer California’s central valley almost exclusively. Being what it is, a leafy flower, makes it a great source of fiber. It’s also high in vitamin C and magnesium. If you live in California, you’ve probably had the chance to savor a fresh artichoke. However, it might seem a little exotic to the rest of us. The big round globe, with all its layers, might be a little intimidating. What to do with it? What is edible? What is not? Use fresh artichokes within a few days of purchase. You may want to trim off the prickly points of the leaves before preparing them. Surprisingly, most of the flower is edible. The only exceptions are the more fibrous end of the stem (the upper part of the stem is very good) and the center. This part of the large, mature artichoke is inedible. There are many tasty and attractive ways to prepare fresh artichokes. Large heads are delicious stuffed and roasted. Or artichokes can be steamed and the leaves removed and served for dipping into any sauce your imagination allows. Once the fuzzy center— the “choke” of the artichoke—is removed, the hollowed out core can be used as a serving dish for salads or soups. Small, young artichokes don’t have to have the fibrous center choke removed, and can be cooked and eaten whole. Try this wonderful recipe for Lemon Chicken With Artichokes and Olives. The simple combination of flavors showcases artichokes in a delicious way. Lemon Chicken with Artichokes and Olives Progressive Jackpot Adding $300 $100 Double Action!!! Bingo is open to the public We offer Birthday and Good Neighbor Gift Certificates Handicap Accessible Hall available for rent, Wedding receptions, Anniversaries, Business meetings. Parties 50-250 1 2 1 2 1 1 1 6 5 2 2 1 5 large (4 pound) chicken, halved, backbone removed tablespoons olive oil tablespoon unsalted butter tablespoons poultry seasoning teaspoon salt teaspoon freshly ground black pepper cup low-sodium chicken broth whole garlic cloves with skins on large artichoke hearts, quartered, 3 1/2 pounds total (See “How to Prep Hearts” below) tablespoons grated lemon peel teaspoons lemon juice cup unpitted green olives flat-leaf parsley sprigs 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Heat oil and butter in large Dutch oven over mediumhigh heat. Sprinkle chicken all over with poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Lay chicken in hot oil, skin-side down. Cook until browned, about 5 minutes. Turn chicken over. Pour the chicken broth around the outside edges of the chicken. Add the garlic, artichokes, lemon juice and lemon peel. 2. Roast chicken in oven, uncovered, until cooked through, about 1 hour or when temperature reaches 165 F on thermometer placed in thickest part of the thigh without touching bone. Remove the bird from the oven; let rest 10 minutes. (The thigh meat is forgiving, even if overcooked. In fact, it becomes more tender when cooked to at least 160 F.) Add olives and parsley and serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6. How to Prep Artichoke Hearts: Snap off thick green outer leaves down to yellowish core. Halve artichokes crosswise; discard thorny tips. Trim stem to about 1/2 inch and peel tough outer skin from remaining stem. Halve artichoke lengthwise; scoop out and discard fuzzy, red-tipped choke. Put hearts in cold water with a little lemon juice and set aside until you’re ready to cook. Benefits for Veterans Dear Savvy Senior, I would like to find out what kinds of veterans benefits are available to older vets and their spouses? My dad served four years in the Army during the Korean War, and I’m curious to see if there are any VA benefits that he or my mom may qualify for. What can you tell me? Searching Son Dear Searching, That’s a great question. There are actually millions of older veterans and their families who don’t take advantage of the VA benefits they’re entitled to because they either don’t know they exist or they don’t think they would qualify for them. Here’s what you and your parents should know. Underused Benefits While the VA provides a wide range of commonly known benefits and services for its veterans—like health care, education support through the GI Bill and home loans—they also provide a bevy of lesser-known benefits that were specifically created to help senior veterans and their family members, as well as their survivors. To be eligible, however, your parent’s income and assets in most cases will need to be below certain limits, and your dad’s discharge from the military must have been under conditions other than dishonorable. Here’s a breakdown of four benefits that are often overlooked by older vets and their families. Veterans Pension: This is available to limited-income veterans that are age 65 and older or are totally disabled, who served at least 90 days of active military service with at least one day of service during a period of war (stateside or overseas). To be eligible, your parent’s assets will generally need to be under $80,000 not counting their house and vehicle, and their annual “countable income” must be under $15,493 or $11,830 for a single veteran. Countable income includes earnings, disability and retirement payments, interest and dividends, and net income from business or farming, minus Death Pension: This is available to low-income surviving spouses and dependents of wartime veterans whose death was not related to military service. To receive this benefit, a surviving spouse’s annual income must be under $7,933, or under $9,696 if she is housebound (minus medical expenses), with cash assets under $80,000. Aid and Attendance: This little known benefit can help elderly veterans and their spouses pay for in-home care, an assisted living facility or nursing home care. It pays up to $1,949 per month, in addition to the monthly pension benefits. To qualify, the veteran must be 65 or older (or permanently disabled), have served during wartime and meet certain financial and medical requirements. To qualify medically, one of your parents would need assistance with basic everyday living tasks like eating, bathing, dressing or going to the bathroom. Being blind or in a nursing home or assisted living facility for mental incapacity also qualifies. And to qualify financially, your parent’s annual income as a couple (minus medical and long-term care expenses) cannot exceed $23,396; $19,736 for a single veteran; or $12,681 for a surviving spouse. And their assets must be less that $80,000, excluding their home and car. If your name is drawn we'll send you a $50 check on the 15th of the month. Burial Benefits: Regardless of income and assets, this benefit provides all veterans, spouses and dependents a free burial at a national cemetery and a free grave marker. Unfortunately, funeral or cremation costs are not covered. However, some veterans may qualify for a $300 funeral allowance and $300 for a plot if they choose to be buried in a private cemetery. To learn more see www.cem. va.gov. VA Resources A good place to learn about all types of veterans benefits is at the online at www. ebenifits.va.gov or www.vba.va.gov. Or contact your regional VA office or local veterans service organization, where you can get personalized help and assistance in filing claims. See www.va.gov/statedva.htm for contact information or call the VA benefits helpline at 800-827-1000. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. A friendly dog came up and licked my face and I was so frightened, I shot him. I felt deep remorse in my dream. This dream deeply upset me because I have dogs and cats and would never hurt them, or any living animal or person. I don’t want this kind of dream again. How do I stop it? Nelson M., Las Vegas, Nevada Dear Dream Lady, (Edited) I dreamed (in color) that I was outside and looking at two huge buildings standing all alone with nothing around them. I was outside the buildings and I saw a man on an upper floor dressed in white, but with no facial features. I approached about 15 feet, but we did not converse. He then walked to an open window while I found myself at the same window, but he was nowhere to be seen. Looking out, I saw a beautiful valley with shades of green, a nearby mountain and a vivid blue sky. Then, I woke up. Charles N., Henderson, Nevada Dear Nelson, Yes, it is the news you watch. You are having a “reflective” dream which I see a lot of depending on how much a person watches TV news. I believe watching TV news causes an unusual amount of fear and mistrust of others. The dog is a good sign— he symbolizes the loving part of you. Shut off your TV (or only watch 30 to 60 minutes of “bad” news), play music you enjoy and/or read magazines or books that bring you contentment. The upsetting dream will not return because it has nothing bad to reflect. I wish you peace. —Dream Lady Dear Charles, Buildings reflect the dreamer, and so do people whom you do not know. The building stands alone and so does the man in the building. His white face with no facial features reflects purity, but no personality. All of these symbols reflect you. The scenery you see are your wishes for a more “colorful” life. Are you a recent widower or have you suffered a loss of a loved one? If so, Mail your dreams to Dream Lady at P.O. Box 414, Entiat, WA 98822. Send a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope because not all dreams are published. Television Set Q: At a recent estate sale, I purchased an early TV set, a CBS Columbia, Model RX 90 console with a 15-inch screen. I paid $50, and bought it because I had never seen a CBS set before. Do you think I got a good deal? —Rob, Chicago A: According to Antique Trader Radio and Television Price Guide, edited by Kyle Husfloen and published by Krause Books, you made an excellent buy. Your set was manufactured in 1954 and was of the first color TVs marketed. It is considered rare, and Husfloen values the set at $5,000. Q: I have a Victorian-era Majestic wood stove. Could you tell me how much it is worth? —Raymond, Albuquerque, New Mexico A: Since 1973, Richard Richardson and his daughter, Sara, aka The Stove Princess, have been involved with vintage stoves and ranges. Their business, located in Goshen, Massachusetts, buys, sells, restores and appraises vintage stoves and ranges, and might be able to help you establish a value for your Majestic. BINGO BUGLE Phoenix Edition March 2016 Azusa, California Dear Johnny, Clearly your “jackpot high” has convinced you that our love of Bingo has the power to solve the world’s worst problems. Sadly, it’s going to take a lot more than dabbing a few numbers and winning a few dollars to accomplish this. But your heart is certainly in the right place. —Aunt Bingo Bad customer service Bingo trip gone bad Dear Aunt Bingo, If being addicted to Bingo is wrong, then I don’t want to be right! I arrived home from Bingo with a smile on my face because I yelled out “Bingo!” on the last game, a coverall, for $250. I turned on the TV and quickly lost my smile to breaking news of another terrorist attack. On behalf of all Bingo players, our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims of these terrible actions. My question or thought is: Has there ever been a missionary who has gone to a war-torn country like Syria or into a cave that is occupied by these terrorists who only think about dying and killing as many people as possible, and introduce them to Bingo? If not, don’t you think it’s time to share the good news—there is a game called Bingo! Aunt Bingo, we need to use your platform and say: “Put down your weapons and pick up your daubers!” I don’t know if virgins exist in the afterlife, but I assure you that 75 Bingo balls will put a smile on your face. —Johnny A., Dear Aunt Bingo, I am writing you today about a really bad experience I had at a Bingo hall/casino I went to on a bus trip. When we arrived, the person who was in charge of getting us off the bus and helping us receive our rewards for the trip (like $5 meal vouchers and Bingo bucks towards our packages that were part of the bus trip) was rude and disrespectful and yelled at us constantly. We had to stand in three different lines for each item—like the card, the admissions books and the promotions and specials. Some of the stuff he promised our person in charge he said he wasn’t going to give us because it wasn’t promised and the whole time he was screaming at all of us! After all of that, when we entered the hall a group of us was sitting in the nonsmoking section and a security guard was rude and nasty toward us as well. He told us to shut up and keep the noise down when we weren’t talking except in librarylevel voices. I go to plenty of Bingo halls and I have never received such horrible customer service in my life. When my friends and I go to Bingo, we laugh and enjoy ourselves and at this hall there was nothing enjoyable about the experience. We were not loud or swearing or nasty to anyone there, but their behaviors were just out of control. I have called and lodged a complaint to their management and am still waiting for a response. Thank you for letting me vent. I was very hurt and upset and we rode the bus two hours from our hometown for that trip! —Bingo Mama, via email Dear Bingo Mama, I am so sorry to hear about your bad experience. What a terrible way for a gaming establishment to conduct business—by having the first person a bus full of paying customers meets be rude and bullying, followed by more of the same from another employee once the group moves inside. You were smart to contact management and lodge a complaint. I hope the bus driver/escort did the same. Please keep us posted on the outcome of your phone call to those in charge. —Aunt Bingo Share your views! Write to Aunt Bingo c/o the Bingo Bugle, P.O.
