Show your students either of the titles suggested and discuss how the character or animal feels in a brand new setting. 2. Explain the rules of BINGO on chart paper or Smart board. Make sure each child has some markers so he or she can keep track as the teacher calls out the objects. 3. Play Classroom Bingo by having children fill in their own personal BINGO cards using objects in the classroom. (Desk, table, toys, coat rack, window, door, teacher, students, pencil, ruler, globe. Carpet, calendar, ruler, scissors, eraser, chalkboard, door, fire alarm, phone, bell etc.) Students may draw pictures, print the words, or use teacher-prepared cutouts of the objects. 4. Using chart paper or board, teacher can choose the objects randomly from pieces of paper faced down. Show the object with the name and picture to aid all types of learners in your classroom. Make sure you take the time to show the students where the objects are in the row. Keep calling objects wait for a child to get five in a row and yell BINGO. By playing the game several times, each child will have the opportunity to learn the names of objects he or she may be unfamiliar with as well as the location of the objects in the room. Each one of these books highlights an important characteristic that makes each person special. Choose one or more than one of the books and share them with your class. Discuss how character in the book was able to realize that everyone is different and valuable within a community. 2. Using the Venn diagram below have children brainstorm the ways that they are the same and different from one and other. I.e. Sex, height, glasses, siblings, pets, language may be different but age, grade, Mrs. X’s class, live in the same city may be the same. Are there things that are the same about everyone? Me Others 3. Have each child think of something that makes them unique and proud of themselves, draw or write about it, post them in your classroom. This is especially good for school parent’s night at the beginning of the year. Unit Plans Grade Level: 3-5 Theme: Proud to Be Me Tumblebook Resources: **Suki’s Kimono (book) Hannah is my Name (book) Objective: to have children begin to explore their own heritage and learn tolerance of other communities customs and traditions, mapping skills Lesson Plan: 1. Read Suki’s Kimono as a class. 2. Discuss the difference between Suki’s view of her clothing and customs and that of her sister’s. Have children consider whether they think it is “good” or “bad” to be different. 3. Have children discuss what special objects, ceremonies, articles of clothing, foods, traditions, the art music and dance etc. they have in their home. 4. Have the students begin to fill in the sheet provided and/or send it home as it will give you as well as your students a fantastic opportunity to learn about one and other. 5. Post a map in your classroom and have children record on the map where their families have immigrated from and how. 6. Have children bring in or dress in “traditional” clothes on a special day. (You may even want to discuss nutrition and agriculture by bringing in different foods.)
