Name: The Periodic Table is a classification system to show us all the elements that make up matter all around us. An element is a pure substance made only of particles of that kind (eg: Oxygen). A compound is made up of 2 or more elements (eg: Water is made of Hydrogen and Oxygen). Compounds are not shown on the Periodic Table. Dmitri Mendeleev developed the Periodic Table in 1869. He arranged the elements in the pattern we still use today, in rows and columns based on their properties. The rows are called periods and the columns are called groups. Each element has its own name and chemical symbol. (See diagram on following page).
