Naming and Formula Writing for Acids…
If an ionic compound begins with hydrogen then it is an acid. It will dissociate in water.
These compounds can be given an “acid name”.
For example, we have learned the following names:
1. HCl is hydrogen chloride
2. HNO3 is hydrogen nitrate
3. H2SO3 is hydrogen sulfite
Notice that the endings for these 3 ionic salts are “ide”, “ate” and “ite”
We use these endings to determine the acid name as follows.
Drop hydrogen out of the name and drop the ending.
If the name ends in “ide” then it becomes hydro______ic acid.
If the name ends in “ate” then it becomes ______ic acid.
If the name ends in “ite” then it becomes ______ous acid.
So for the examples above:
Formula
1.
HCl
2.
HNO3
3.
H2SO3
4.
HClO
5.
HClO2
6.
HClO3
7.

8.

9.
H2SO4
10.
H2SO3
11.
HMnO4
14.
H3PO4
15
HC2H3O2
17.
HBrO3
18.
H3BO3
19.

20.
H2Cr2O7
