I would like to choose “Matilda” to be the text for the design of teaching
activities for story and drama for Form Three students in my school. In my
opinion, it is an ideal text for adolescents because it deals with “coming of age”,
which is one of the themes suggested in the English Language curriculum. The
protagonist Matilda had conflicts with her parents and teachers at school, which
is what often teenagers face during puberty. As a result, the theme provides a
platform for devising a series of readers‟ response activities which hopefully
students will feel strongly about and become engaged in the story.
Moreover, the novels written by Roald Dahl serve as an excellent springboard
for introducing narrative techniques in writing stories. In this regard, Matilda
offers rich inputs for enriching students‟ language in narrative writing. It is full
of puns on names, sensory details, imagery, exaggeration and figurative language
to create humour in characterization and plot development. Through analyzing
the language of Matilda with students, it is hoped that students will come to
aware of the metaphorical use of language in story writing.
Furthermore, the novel goes with a movie “Matilda” which follows similar plot.
Showing video clips to sandwich with the novel is appealing visually to students.
Hopefully it would enhance the understanding of students on the story.

Teaching Procedures
1. Preparation before lesson
 Apart from the first two lessons which serve solely for pre-reading purposes,
students are supposed to prepare before lessons and complete the
worksheets while they read the chapters at home.
2. Focus of Worksheets for Homework
 Each unit of lesson goes with relevant worksheets on the chapter(s) as
homework
 They are mainly for identifying the plot of the story or for visualizing the
representation of characters. scenes and setting in the book. Students will
also be asked to develop their initial response to the chapter or theme to
prepare for their sharing in class.
3. Focus of lesson activities
 The lessons are for developing critical response to the story and exercising


creativity.
Many of the lessons start by asking students to present their work or
drawing or sharing in pair. This prepares students for the viewing of the
movie clip for revisiting the plot and comparing interpretation in book and
movie.
The other activities for developing language and understanding of the
characters and themes in which group work is often included to facilitate
exchange of opinions and exploring different viewpoints.
4. Post-reading Activities as consolidation
 Each unit of lessons is rounded up with some post reading activities in which
students need to respond personally to the book.

Spotting the Use of Figurative Language
Read the following excerpt from Chapter 1 of the book about how the parents of
Matilda treat her and answer the following questions:
What Parents!
Occasionally one comes across parents who.show no interest in their
children…..
Mr and Mrs Wormwood were two such parents. They had a son called
Michael and a daughter called Matilda, and the parents looked upon Matilda
in particular as nothing more than a scab. A scab is something you have
to put up with until the time comes when you can pick it off and flick it
away. Mr and Mrs Wormwood looked forward enormously to the time
when they could pick their little daughter off and flick her away,
preferably into the next county or even further than that.
…But Mr and Mrs Wormwood were both so gormless and so warapped up in
their own silly little lives that they failed to notice anything unusual about
their daughter. To tell the truth, I doubt they would have noticed had
she crawled into the house with a broken leg.

Roald Dahl is using a literary device of
exaggeration in the above to bring
fun to the readers. It means you stretch the truth to get your point across or
to make people laugh.

describing characters. They add lots of fun to your reading!

Activity 7 Readers’ Theatre on the Argument
Matilda and her family are eating dinners in front of the TV in the living room.
Mr Wormwood (proudly): Every car that comes through my hands has their mileage cut to under
10000 before they are for sale. How smart I am!
Matilda (despisingly): But daddy, that’s dishonest. It’s disgusting. You’re cheating people who
trust you.
Mr Wormwood (angrily): You’re stupid and an idiot! If you don’t like it then don’t eat the food in
this house!
Matilda: It’s dirty money!
I hate it!
Mrs Wormwood (nodding her head): How dare you talk to your dad like that. Keep your nasty
mouth shut so we can watch this programme in peace.
Matilda: Mummy, would you mind if I ate my supper in the dining room so I could read my books?
Mr Wormwood (angrily): I would mind! Supper is a family gathering and no one leaves the table till
it’s over!
Matilda: But we’re not at the table. We never are. We’re always eating off our knees and watching
the telly.
Mr Wormwood (suddenly softly dangerous): What’s wrong with watching the telly, may I ask?
Matilda( keep quiet) but thinking…

Objective
To explore the feeling of Matilda in her argument with dad
Situation
Mr Wormwood is puzzled about how Matilda could sort out the sum so quickly
when he was talking to Michael about his profit gained in car sale. You are going
to do a role play to interview Matilda to follow up what happened in the incident.
To recap your memory, watch the following movie clip:
The First Practical Advice: 09:20-10:50
Steps
 Split into group of 3. One student plays the role of Matilda. One is
Michael and another is Mr Wormwood..
 Michael and Mr Wormwood need to ask Matilda questions about the incident
happened in the chapter on Arithmetic and Matilda needs to answer the
questions in the role to defend herself.
 You will have 5 minutes to prepare for the interview. Use the role cards to
help you prepare for the hotseating.

Role Card for Matilda
You are Matilda. You have just sorted out the profit gained in selling second hand cars when
you overheard a conversation between your dad and your brother but your father did not
believe that you could do it in your head and shouted at you. Think about
 What you were thinking when you shouted the answer
 What you expected your dad to say when he found you could sort out the answer so
quickly
 How you felt when your dad said, “shut up! Stop guessing and trying to be clever.
“You little cheat! You looked at my paper!”
 What you thought about your dad
 What you longed for from your dad
You need to answer the questions raised by your dad and the social worker in the interview.
Role Card for Mr Wormwood
You are Mr Wormwood. You always thought that Michael was your favourite but to your
surprise, you found that Matilda could sort out the answer of the sum on the spot. Think
about
 How you felt when you found that Matilda could sort out the sum so quickly
 What Matilda could have done to sort out the sum so quickly
 Why you said Matilda was a liar and cheat
 How you would defend for Michael
 Questions to ask Matilda to clarify what happened in the incident
Role Card for Michael
You are an ordinary boy but you are the favourite in your family. Think about
 How you felt when you heard Matilda shouted the answer more quickly than you do
 How you felt about your own performance when compared with Matilda
 How your dad may change in his attitude towards Matilda and you
 Reasons to explain why you couldn’t sort out the sum
 Reasons to explain why Matilda could sort out the sum
 What you would say to Matilda and your dad afterwards
 Ask Matilda questions so that you can show the best of yourself to your dad and clarify
the issue.

Miss Trunchbull was something else together.
She was a gigantic holy terror, a fierce tyrannical
monster who frightened the life out of the pupils and teachers alike.
And when she came close to
you could almost feel the dangerous heat radiating from her as from a red-hot rod of metal.
When she marched – Miss Trunchbull never walked, she always marched like a storm trooper with
long strides and arms swinging…you could actually hear her snorting as she went, and if a group of
children happened to be in her path, she ploughed right on through them like a tank, with small
people bouncing off her to left and right.
If you ever meet her, you should behave as you would if
you met an enraged rhinoceros out in the bush – climb up the nearest tree and stay there until it
has gone away.

Do you think there will be characters like Miss Trunchbull in the world?
Why do you think Roald Dahl created a character which is exactly opposite to
each other?
Protagonist V.S. Antagonist
In fiction, we often see a pair of protagonist and antagonist. The antagonist is
an enemy that stops the main character from achieving his aim.
In the story, Miss Trunchbull is an antagonist to add tension to the story. It
is completely the opposite of Miss Honey to make the story hilarious and
humourous.

Before you watch the clip, read the following dialogue between Miss
Trunchbull and Amanda:
Miss Trunchbull had now reached the victim and stood towering over her.
“I want those filthy pigtails off before you come back to school tomorrow!” she
barked.
Amanda, paralysed with fright, stuttered, “My m-m-mummy likes them. She
p-p-plaits them for me every morning.”
“Your mummy‟s a twit!”, the Trunchbull shouted.
“I don‟t care what your mum thinks!” yelled Miss Trunchbull.
“She‟s going to throw her with her hammer,” murmured Hortensia.
Who is more powerful in the dialogue? Who is scared? Which one is an
observer?
How did the use of reporting verbs tell you about the feeling of each character?

In your group, try readers’ theatre by reading aloud the above script. Student
A is Miss Trunchbull, B is Amanda and C is the narrator and Hortensia.
Activity 5 Precise description in Recount

The Trunchbull grabbed hold of Amanda‟s pigtails in her right fist and lifted the
girl clear off the ground. Then she started swinging her round and round and
round her head, faster and faster and Amanda was screaming blue murder and the
Trunchbull was yelling, “ I‟ll give you pigtails, you little rat!”
And now the Trunchbull was leaning back against the weight of the whirling girl
and pivoting expertly on her toes, spinning round and round, and soon Amanda
Thripp was traveling so fast she became a blur, and suddenly, with a mighty grunt,
the Trunchbull let go of the pigtails and Amanda went sailing like a rocket right
over the wire fence of the playground and high up into the sky.

What Parents!
Occasionally one comes across parents who.show no interest in their children…..
Mr and Mrs Wormwood were two such parents. They had a son called Michael and a
daughter called Matilda, and the parents looked upon Matilda in particular as nothing more
than a scab. A scab is something you have to put up with until the time comes when you
can pick it off and flick it away. Mr and Mrs Wormwood looked forward enormously to
the time when they could pick their little daughter off and flick her away, preferably into the
next county or even further than that.
…But Mr and Mrs Wormwood were both so gormless and so warapped up in their own silly
little lives that they failed to notice anything unusual about their daughter. To tell the truth,
I doubt they would have noticed had she crawled into the house with a broken leg.
1.How does Roald Dahl describe the way Mr and Mrs Wormwood treat Matilda?
They show no interest in their children.
2.What does Dahl use to compare the way the parents treat Matilda?
They treat Matilda as a scab.
3.In what way is it similar to the way they treat Matilda?
A scab is something you detest and want to get rid of. They hate Matilda and want to get rid
of her.
This literary device is metaphor.
It is a figurative language to compare two unlike things.
It inspires you to see something in a new light to bring humour.
4.Did Mr and Mrs Wormwood notice anything unusual about Matilda? What example did
Dahl use to explain their lack of interest in Matilda?
They failed to notice that. He used the example of not noticing a crawling Matilda with
broken leg to show their lack of interest in Matilda.
5. Do you think it is believable? How do you feel after reading the description of Dahl?
It is unbelievable. Roald Dahl used such description to exaggerate their lack of interest in
Matilda.
