Student Achievement
We are always proud of our talented students when they follow their interests and achieve well in their
chosen field. Piper-Anne Keay of Year 9 is one such student. Piper only started taking photographs
for the last few months and recently entered the Moggill Creek Catchment Photography Competition
were she was awarded 2nd place in the Years 8-12 category of Native Flora and Fauna in the Brisbane
Catchments. Piper also received a highly commended on another photograph and her second place
photograph will shortly be displayed on the following website http://www.moggillcreek.org/activitiesevents/photography-competition.
Piper also entered the Bayside South
Development Forum Photography
Competition which was advertised in the
local paper where they were asking for
photographs of and around Wynnum. The
winners from this competition are to have
their photo published in the 2015 Bayside
Community Calendar.
Congratulations
Piper on being chosen as one of those
winners. We look forward to seeing the
published calendar.
Piper has displayed some of the terrific
photographs she has taken on her
Facebook page called Piper-Anne
Photography.
Congratulations Piper on these great
achievements!

The Arts Department News
Congratulations to Chantelle Keay who has been accepted into the Generations in Jazz Academy in Mt
Gambier, South Australia in 2015.
Music Extension students, Chantelle Keay, Hayley Forster, Peter Craig and Nichola Hall presented
their end of year recital in the Star Theatre on Friday 10 October. It was a wonderful afternoon of
music making featuring Chantelle on saxophone and vocals presenting a full jazz bracket with her
accompanist Leo McFadden. Vocalist and guitarist Nichola Hall rocked her way through her
performance with help from Kerrin Greally, Nathaniel and Raf Laurel. Trombonist Peter Craig
travelled the musical timeline playing an interesting repertoire from Bach to Bernstein with his
accompanist Peter Crane and Hayley Forster displayed her technical mastery on the flute by
presenting a complete Baroque flute sonata. Thank you to all students, teachers, family and friends
who came along to support the students in their final concert of the year. Congratulations one and all.
In early October Nichola Hall performed in the Quest for the Best competition and was awarded
second place and will appear at the Halloween Street Parade on Saturday 1 November. Look out for
her performance in The Tent.
Variety Night was held on Friday 17 October. This event was a huge success with over 15 acts from
poetry reading and dancing through to solo singers and bands performing to an auditorium of family
and friends. There were some amazing prizes this year for the winners. Brendan Dunstan came third
and received a $50 voucher. Nicola Hall placed second and got to choose between a 4 hour recording
session or a 4 hour video session and the band JoJin made up of Peter Craig, Keahn Butler and Linn
Khant Thwin received a recording session to the value of $3,000 to record the band’s first album.
Many thanks must go to our judges Mrs Hawkins and Hannah and Chris from Snap Collective. Snap
Collective were also sponsors of the event providing the prizes to the place getters. But most
importantly three cheers are needed for school leaders Laura Thwaites and Daniel Garsden and
members of the Arts Committee for putting together a terrific night of entertainment. Daniel and
Laura went beyond the call of duty and not only organised the event but were the MCs for the evening
and performed in a terrifically funny comedy skit. Thanks to all who participated and came along to
support.
In May 2015 the school will be performing Grease – the Musical. We are currently calling for students
to sign-up for roles as singers, actors, back stage, front of house, make-up, costumes and technical
crew. Auditions for the main acting/singing roles will be on Wednesday 5 November from 1.00pm2:40pm in the Star Theatre.

From the Chaplain
Leading into Christmas, the Wynnum SHS community has been asked to assist the Foodbank in
helping families. The Foodbank is in desperate need of
donations to help struggling families in our community. This
year to date they have given out 9,868,580 meals to those less
fortunate.
If you are able to assist by
donating any non-perishable
items we would greatly
appreciate it.
These can be
dropped off at the bottom of A
Block in the designated box near
the Chaplain’s office.
Please
bring your donations any time
over the next couple of weeks.
To launch this appeal we had a
special guest from Foodbank on
Assembly Monday 3 November.
Graffiti Education Program
Year 8 students were fortunate to be entertained last week by Xavia from Warner Youth Education on
behalf of Brisbane City Council. Through role play and self-reflection, students identified difficult
choices teenagers are faced with and developed strategies to overcome these issues. The session
focussed on peer pressure using graffiti as an example. Please find below the parent information that
accompanies the Brisbane City Council initiative.
