Surname: Kelly This interesting surname, with variant spellings Kelley and Kellie, has three distinct possible
origins. Firstly, it is an Anglicized form of the great Old Gaelic name "O'Ceallaigh". The Gaelic prefix "O"
indicates "male descendant of", plus the personal byname "Ceallach" meaning "strife" or "contention". The
main (O')Kelly clan belonged to Ui Maine (mid Galway and South Roscommon), and the reigning chieftain,
O'Ceallaigh (circa 1351), was a renowned patron of the arts. O'Kelly of Gallagh, whose claim to the
designation chief of the name is officially recognised is entitled to be called the O'Kelly. The much lamented
Grace Kelly of Monaco was of Irish stock. The surname may also be of English locational origin, from a place
thus called in Devonshire, recorded as "Kelli" in the 1194 Pipe Rolls of that County, and named with the
Welsh/Cornish "celli", grove. In 1521, the birth of Henry, son of William Kelly and Jane Trecarrell, was
recorded in Kelly, Devonshire. Finally, the name may be of Scottish territorial origin from the lands of Kelly
near Arbroath, Angus, named with the Gaelic element "coille", wood or grove. John de Kelly, noted in "Scottish
Acts of Parliament" was abbot of Arbroath in 1373. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to
be that of Warin de Kelly, which was dated 1194, in the "Pipe Rolls of Devonshire", during the reign of King
Richard 1, known as "Richard the Lionheart", 1189 - 1199. Surnames became necessary when governments
introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in
every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

INTRODUCTION
The following family tree has taken almost two years to put together
and has been a labor of love and adventure for me.
I have met many cousins through my research and have been in contact
with family members that I probably would not have ever known if not
for my research.
I believe the most memorable time during my research is my trip back
to North Carolina, where I met my cousin, Frances Casstevens. I
originally met Frances through the Internet when I found her website
http://fcasstevens.tripod.com/
In June 2008, my husband, Frank, my granddaughter, Desire and myself
went back to visit our son, Bryan and his family in North Carolina. I
made arrangements to meet Frances while I was there.
Following is a copy of the email I sent to my sisters the day after
my visit:

Hi Sisters,
We traveled to Yadkinville yesterday and I got to step into the past and see some of our history.
We arrived in Yadkinville, after a three-hour trip from Fayetteville, and met Frances Casstevens at her
home on Chestnut Street. She has a humble little home in a quiet little town tucked into the North
Carolina hills.
Our first visit was to the site of her father's home that has been recently torn down to make place for
"progress." Francis was visibly distraught that a large piece of her past had been removed with no
regard to the contributions that her father had made to the town.
We then went to lunch at a small local buffet and talked and got to know each other a little better.
After lunch we drove to Huntsville, which is down the road from Yadkinville. We arrived at the site of
what used to be the town of Huntsville before the county seat was moved to Yadkinville. We turned off
the main road and onto a gravel road dotted with lovely homes nestled into tall shady trees. To the right
of the gravel road was a building that used to be the tavern and post office where our great, great, great,
great grandfather, John Kelly lived and worked. It is slowly being taken over with trees and shrubs. We
were able to get pictures and I will be sharing them. Bryan and Monica were able to get a piece of glass
from the building and we are going to get it mounted in some sort of display.
We then drove a little farther up the main road and pulled off on another gravel road similar to the first
one. Off to the left was a circle of trees and berry bushes that enclose a cemetery from the past. We
made our way through the vegetation and found the head stones of our great, great, great, great
grandfather, John Kelly and his grandson Thomas Kelly. Even though it is believed that there may be as
many as 25 people buried at this site, these are the only headstones to survive. I am still in awe that I
got to experience this.
After our visit to the graveyard, we drove up the hill to see the Hunt home where Will Kelly was shot.

The barn where he was shot is gone, but the home is still there.
It was so interesting and something that I will never forget.

Much of the beginning of the family tree is from information that
Frances provided to me.
Of course her family tree branched off in another direction and I
eliminated the part of it that was not relevant to our family.
I wanted to complete this and send Frances a copy, unfortunately,
Frances died on September 16, 2009.
I apologize in advance if I have any incorrect information, I spent a
considerable amount of time contacting or trying to contact family
members to get accurate information.
I also apologize if I have left anybody out. I tried to be as
thorough as possible but could not make contact with everybody.
You will see the Kelly name sometimes listed as “Kelley.” It was
changed from time to time depending on the Census taker. Sometimes
their penmanship was not so good, sometimes their spelling was not so
good and sometimes they just wrote down what they wanted to.

John Kelly
John (1) Kelly(father and mother unknown) was born 04/02/1765 in MD, and died
12/13/1816 in Huntsville, Surry Co., NC. He married Anne (Nancy) Davis Abt. 1782 in
Maryland, daughter of William Davis and Nancy Luckett. She was born 1765, and died
1832 in Rowan Co., NC.
Notes for John Kelly:
John Kelly's name first appears in public records when he witnessd a deed from
Henry Speer to John Thomas Longino on July 7, 1795 (Surry Co., NC, Deed Bk. F, p.
260).
John was appointed postmaster at Huntsville on Dec. 31, 1806, a post he held until
his death. Thomas D. Kelly, who was appointed Feb. 14, 1817, succeeded John Kelly.
John Kelly also ran the tavern and stagecoach stop at the intersection of the
Mulberry Fields Road and High Street (later the home of some of the Clingman
family, see Deed Book X, p. 253, Yadkin County, NC). See page
78, in Lewis Brumfield (ed.), HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURE OF YADKIN COUNTY, NORTH
CAROLINA publication for the Yadkin County Historical Society, by Winston Printing
Co., Winston-Salem, NC, 1987.
After John Kelly's death in 1816, his widow, Nancy Anne Davis Kelly, petitioned the
court of Rowan County for a License to operate a Tavern. She later married Lamb
Taylor, formerly of Currituck County, second. She left a will, dated April 14,
1831, probated in August 1832, recorded in Rowan County, NC, Book H, p. 555.
In her will, she bequeathed to son Alexander D. Kelly the one-half of my tract of
land near Huntsville, laid off so as to "include the house in which he now
lives".... She left son Thomas D. Kelly one feather bed, two sheets, and one
counterpane, one blanket and two pillows. She left all her wearing apparel to sons
Thomas, William, John, Samuel, Leonard, and Alexander "to be equally divided among
them for the use of their children."

Alexander Davis Kelly (Gen 2), born Abt. 1785 in MD ?; died Aft. 1831.
In 1832, Alexander D. Kelly was living at Huntsville and was given the house in
which he lived and 1/2 of the property, according to the will of his mother, Nancy
Davis Kelly Taylor.
On Sep. 4, 1827, Alexander was a bondsman for the marriage of John Dixon and
Elizabeth Hill (see Surry County, NC, marriage register). No further information.
A deed of trust is recorded in the Stokes County records from Alexander D. Kelly to
Clingman and Jarratt (Book U, p. 203). Clingman and Jarratt operated the Red Store
at Huntsville. Jarratt was also a slave trader.

We don’t know much about John Kelly’s past. History records say he was born in 1765
in Maryland. It would be logical to assume that he was a child of one of the early
settlers in Maryland.
What was life like 1650 to 1700?
Harsh and austere would be good adjectives to describe how things were during this time. In
the beginning the Province or Colony of Maryland in America was established and governed by
the Calverts who were Roman Catholics. Colonial Maryland had a reputation for religious
freedom in its early years, and even today Maryland is known as "The Free State.” A majority of
the immigrants who ventured their lives in the tobacco colony were young and single, and they
married late. Nearly three-quarters of them arrived, as indentured servants, and neither men
nor women servants were free to marry until their terms were completed.
Because male immigrants outnumbered females by as much as three to one, many men
remained single. Over one-quarter of the men who left estates in southern Maryland from 1650
to 1700, died unmarried. Not only did the immigrants marry late, they also died very young. A
man who came to Maryland in his early twenties could expect to live only about twenty more
years. By age forty-five this man and many of his companions would be dead.
The life cycle of growing up, marrying, procreating, and dying was compressed within a
short span of years in 17th century Maryland. Most marriages were of brief duration. One-half
of the unions contracted in one Maryland County in the second half of the century were broken
within seven years by the death of at least one of the partners. As a result, families were small;
most couples had only two or three children.
Babies were born in the home, usually with the help of a mid-wife. The husband was
customarily at hand. Infants were breast-fed, and if some reason the mother could not nurse, a
neighbor with milk to spare was hired to help nourish the baby. The line between infancy and
childhood was crossed at age three. A child was likely to be weaned sometime at the beginning
of the second year, and a new baby might be expected by the end of it. One or both of these
events apparently signified the transition from the-status of infant to that of "little adult." A child's
chances of surviving to maturity also improved about the third birthday.
The education that children received was supposed to suit their station, and might be practical
or academic or both. Apprenticeship was a common method of educating children in many
places but it was mainly a means for teaching trades, including planting, to orphans. It was the
widows who insured that their orphaned sons were cared for and taught how to earn a living
through apprenticeship and that orphaned daughters were provided for by binding them out to
learn housekeeping.
This tradition of binding out children to apprenticeships continued well into the nineteenth
century.

2. John2 Davis Kelly (John1) was born Abt. 1783 in MD ?, and died Bet. 1832 1833 in Surry Co., NC or Davie Co., NC. He married Mildred Sater 08/10/1813 in
Surry Co., NC, daughter of John Sater and Sarah Unknown. She was born Abt. 1784.
John Kelly, Jr. served in the 2nd Company, 2nd Surry County Regiment, in the War of
1812. The 1820 Surry County, NC census listed John and Mildred with 2 females under
10, 1 male under 10 (probably Thomas S. Kelly), 1 male 25-45 (John Kelly, Jr.), 1
female 25-45 (Mildred Sater Kelly), and 1 female over 45
(possibly the mother of John or Mildred).
A deed dated May 25, 1851 from Milly Kelly to Thomas S. Martin for lots nos. 49,50,
52,53,47, 58.59, & 60, which Milly had purchased in 1843 from Elizabeth W. Chafin
states that this property is where "Thomas S. Kelly now lives (See Yadkin County
Deed Book B, p. 404).

Georgia in 1848, and died shortly thereafter. Information on this family was
recently discovered in the pension application of his widow, Phebe Bryan Kelly, and
shared by William and Barbara Kelley, St. Petersburg, FL.

Beginning at a dogwood sapling in Richard C. Puryear's line, runs South 18 chains
and 18 links to a white oak, said Puryear's corner; then West with Joseph Gray's
line 35 chains and 50 links to a white oak, North 3 chains to a
Hickory bush; thence West 30 chains and 50 links to a Pine; thence North 50 chains
and 18 links to a stake, Samuel L. Davis' corner; thence with his line to the
beginning, containing 109 acres, more less, being the tract where Leonard D. Kelly
lived and died.
This land is believed to have been on Battle Branch between the Joseph Gray
Property (now the Hartman-Holden place), and the Richard Puryear land near
Huntsville.

This is a letter from Frances Casstevens. Her grandmother was Effie Kelly, daughter of Leonard Davis
Kelly.
Paulette, I am sending you some pictures of members of the Kelly family and the house in Yadkinville
that is no longer there (near the Harding house). I believe that house was built by L. D. Kelly and wife,
Mary Philadelphia White Kellly. Later, it was the home of Sheriff William Lee Kelly (my granny's
brother) and his wife Charlotte Stimpson Kelly. The had three children, but only Mrs. Hemans Kelly
Sherman lived to adulthood. Then, Julia Kelly and husband Isaac Kilgore lived there (see pictures).
After being rented to non-family people for several years, I lived there from 1960 until 1980 with my
husband. It was a good house to raise 6 children in, with big rooms, and a big shady yard. The picture
taken about 1939 shows the well house and a little building to the left of the house. I believe the man in
this picture is my father, F. D. B. Harding. He is standing in a field where he built his house (still
standing) about 1940-41.

Thomas S. Kelly was a wagon maker. (See 1850 Surry Co., NC, census, 1860, 1870,
1880 Yadkin County, NC censuses.) He lived in the town of Huntsville (see deed from
Milly Kelly to Thomas S. Martin, May 25, 1851, for lots nos. 49, 50,52,53, 47, 58,
59 & 60, which included house in which "Thomas S. Kelly now lives" in Yadkin County
Deed Book B, p. 404). Another deed, from Bird Kimbrough and wife Martha to Allen
Chapman, mentions the "T. S. Kelly line" (Yadkin county Deed Book D, p. 600, dated
1877).
He is buried in present-day Forsyth County in the Kelly Cemetery. Dr. T. R. Harding
was administrator of his estate.

William C. Kelly and wife, Mary Jane Miller moved to Rockport, AK about 1849. In
1866 they were living in Malvern, AK. Several letters exist from William to his parents
and his sister Juliette. William was a doctor, farmer, and storekeeper. He was a member
for the Arkansas State Legislature in 1866.

Before 1855, James Nance was living in Louisburg, Franklin County, NC, in the
William Sykes household. Sykes was also a tailor and James served as his
apprentice. After becoming a tailor, James traveled from place to place making
clothes for people from the cloth they had woven. While on one of his travels,
James met Elizabeth Kelly in Yadkin County and they were married. The couple lived
in Yadkinville and James worked as a tailor for 50 years. (Information on James
Nance from Jack G. Nance, 4028 Synder Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27127, a greatgrandson of James R. Nance, Sr.)
One Pauline Nance died in 1890 at age 80 and was buried in the Yadkinville Town
Cemetery also. She may have been a sister to James Nance.

28. Samuel L.3 Kelly (Leonard Davis2, John1) was born 1835 in Surry Co., NC, and
died Abt. 1864 in Yadkin Co., NC. He married Nancy Caroline Whitaker 11/08/1855 in
Yadkin Co., NC. She was born in Yadkin Co., NC.
Samuel Kelly came home from the War sick and was killed by the Home Guard as a
deserter, according to Effie Harding Robinson. She also told me that Samuel's wife
went West. Years later, their daughter returned to Yadkin County for a visit very
well dressed. She "had married well." Effie also said that her father, Dr. T. R.
Harding, told Rebecca Kelly that her father had been killed as a deserter (Source:
Effie Harding Robinson, Sept. 25, 1983). The death of Samuel Kelly has recently
been documented. He was killed by Capt. Reuben Wilson and his men who had been
sent to Forsyth/Yadkin area to find and arrest deserters.

He also served as a Corporal in Company C, 21st Virginia Calvary, CSA, enlisting on
Aug. 10, 1863, and was wounded in the hand during the war.

Will Kelly was murdered on a cold, snowy February day at the Dalton-Hunt house in
Yadkinville. He worked as a hired hand for the owner, Mrs. Mary Martin Hunt, widow
of Dr. Leander G. Hunt. He reportedly was having an affair with Mrs. Hunt's
daughter, Daisy, and had sent a note for Daisy to meet him in the barn. No one was

Hemans Wentworth (Kelly) Shermer taught school at the Yadkinville High School
before her marriage. She and Wylie Shermer had no children.
Her estate, valued at 1/3 of a million dollars, was left to the Oxford Orphanage,
Oxford, NC. This estate included the old Kelly homeplace on South Jackson Street,
Yadkinville, NC, where William Lee Kelly lived.
Wylie Calvin Shermer worked for the railroad for a number of years and acquired a
large amount of stock.

Julia Amelia (Kelly) Kilgore met her future husband while she and her twin sisters
(Pauline and Josephine) were living in Fremont, NE.

Isaac A. Kilgore's parents moved from Troy, PA to Fremont, NE about 1860. There
Isaac was born and met his wife. Isaac and Julia Kelly Kilgore returned to
Yadkinville. He was a painter and could paint woodwork and mantles to look like
marble. On their return, they lived in the Leonard Kelly home, corner of Jackson
and Birch Streets.

Effie Morrison Kelly
Effie Morrison Kelly grew up in Yadkinville, the youngest of the children of
Leonard D. Kelly II and wife, Mary Philadelphia White Kelly. As a child, she lived
in a large house east of Yadkinville on Old 421, about where the
Main Unified building is located.
After Effie married Dr. T. R. Harding, they lived in several houses in Yadkinville,
and moved back to Huntsville for a time. They first lived in the Lon West house on
Virginia Drive. Later they moved into the John D. Holcomb, Sr., house on the corner
of Jackson and Elm Streets (now home of Miss Sara Holcomb). Later, Dr. Harding
built a house across the street and a medical office beside it. Both are still
standing (2008).
Thomas Renny Harding
Dr. Harding's medical office was later used by Attorney F. D. B. Harding as a law
office, and still later by great-grandson Danny Casstevens as a music store.
Thomas Renny Harding is believed to have helped the Home Guard during the last days
of the War Between the States. After the war, he clerked in his brother Square
Boone's store in Huntsville, and eventually saved enough money to attend medical
college. He practiced medicine for a time, studying under Dr. Leander G. Hunt at
Huntsville.

Then, he moved to Yadkinville and lived for a while with Dr. Phillips in the house
that later became Mackie-Hinshaw
Funeral Home on West Main Street. Sister Nancy and niece Cora Scott lived with Dr.
Harding before his marriage to Effie Kelly.
Dr. Harding and family also lived in the Lon West House on Virginia Drive, and the
Holcomb house, corner of Jackson & Elm Street (several of the children were born
there) before building the house about 1905-1906 on the east side of Jackson
Street, corner of Elm, on the former property of L. D. Kelly.
Dr. Harding farmed, bought and sold real estate, and was involved in church and
civic activities. He bought stock in the Yadkin Normal School and the Bank of
Yadkin. He served as County Coroner and was Superintendent of the Yadkin County
Board of Health, and President of the Yadkin County Medical Association.
Dr. Harding believed in education and sent all his children to college. He died in
February of 1929, the year of the Stock Market crash, and many accounts owed him
went uncollected because of the Great Depression.

Letters to and from Dr. Harding to his children in college, and many other
receipts, checks, etc. remain in the family, some dating back to the 1880s.

Note: Joseline Graves Harding was named after two of her aunts, Pauline and
Josephine Kelly. Jo graduated from Women's College at Greensboro (now UNCGreensboro) and taught school for one term before joining the Yadkin County Welfare
Department. She spent a year in Pittsburg, PA doing social work, and them became in
1937 the first Superintendent of Welfare in Yadkin County. After doing graduate
work at the University of North Carolina, Joseline was offered the position of
superintendent of Welfare in Catawba County, a post
she held until her untimely death from cancer (see also HERITAGE OF YADKIN COUNTY,
1981, p. 55-57, and 389).

Winston-Salem. She was Division Supervisor of Family and Children Services in

master's degree from Tulane University in New Orleans ca 1949. For more information
