Mount Carmel East Celebrates 40 Years
W
2012 will be a year full of
celebration for Mount Carmel
East, as the hospital marks 40
years since the Sisters of the Holy
Cross developed their farmland
into a hospital to care for central
Ohio residents.
Executive
Director
hen I’m out
and about in our
community and I
tell people what
I do, they want
to know how
the economic
downturn has
impacted the Foundation. My answer:
“We are doing just fine! But we could
do so much more for the hospital and
the community if you were involved.”
And then I invite them!
Our two major fundraisers have
reached record levels, which bucks
the trend seen nationally in nonprofit philanthropy. Another area of
remarkable growth is our employeegiving appeal. Their support allows
our Allocations Committee to give
outstanding financial support to core
Foundation programs, like the ones
you’ll read about here in Inspire.
Another way our friends can
show support is by naming the
Mount Carmel Foundation in their
estate plan. Planning your legacy
gift now ensures that your most
valued programs and services will
continue to reach those in need
for generations to come. Go to
mountcarmelfoundation.org to
initiate that process.
Thank you, and may God continue to
bless you and your loved ones.
Needless to say, there have been
significant changes since then. “On
Mount Carmel East Aerial View Circa 1972
opening day we joked that we
should put a sign out on Broad Street to say we were open,” said Vicki Pack, who worked
opening day as an Emergency Department RN. “As far as I know, no one knew for sure we
were open. I-270 wasn’t open yet. Our first trauma patient came via the dirt construction
road because they knew it would be the fastest way.”
Forty years later, Mount Carmel East is one of the largest hospitals in central Ohio, with
the busiest adult Emergency Department in Greater Columbus. Hospital associates will
celebrate that fact with a blessing and rededication with the Most Reverend, Bishop
Frederick Campbell on April 17 along with commemorations on Doctors’ Day, during
Hospital Week and at the MCE Auxiliary’s Annual Luncheon.
The Mount Carmel Foundation will honor the anniversary as well with a Community
Celebration on Thursday, October 4 at Franklin Park Conservatory. Save the date and look
for more details soon on how to purchase tickets for this special event.
Four New Members Join Foundation Board
Four new members have joined the Mount Carmel Foundation Board of Trustees:
Theodore Adams, vice president and senior counsel, Limited Brands; Scott
Grotelueschen, president of Associated Financial Services; Milton Schott, Jr., president
of MBS & Company; and Dr. Phillip Shubert, system medical director, Maternal
Fetal Medicine for Mount Carmel. All will serve three-year terms. Please join us in
welcoming Theodore, Scott, Milton and Phillip to the Foundation and the board.

Hospital Development Committees
Helping Build Relationships,
Advance Philanthropy
To help the Mount Carmel Foundation focus on hospitalspecific priorities and projects, the Foundation has created
Hospital Development Committees (HDC) for Mount
Carmel East and West. Led by a diverse group of community
leaders who are passionate about Mount Carmel, the
HDCs will help the Foundation advance philanthropy and
development activities that improve the hospitals and further
contribute to the communities it serves.
Courtesy Cart Debuts at
Mount Carmel East
Volunteers are providing an extra special touch for Mount Carmel
East families and visitors by making rounds with a courtesy cart to
waiting areas throughout the hospital.
Developed by Volunteer Services and Nutrition Services with
funding from the Mount Carmel Foundation, the courtesy cart offers
complimentary coffee, hot tea, bottled water, pretzels and freshbaked cookies to family members and visitors while they wait for
their loved ones. The cart is staffed by two volunteers who make
rounds twice a day, five days a week.

Providing a Healing Voice
In the Wake of Unspeakable Tragedy
Barb Herrmann was living in Florida when she got a call she could never
have possibly imagined. Her daughter, Tina Rose B. Herrmann, and grandson,
Kody Alexander Maynard, had been brutally murdered in their home in what
became a tragic national news story. Her granddaughter, Sarah Marie Maynard,
was the unspeakable crime’s only survivor.
Barb moved back to central Ohio shortly thereafter to be close to her three
older sons and twelve grandchildren. Thanks to a referral from a Mount
Carmel employee, she started going to counseling at Mount Carmel’s Crime
and Trauma Assistance Program (CTAP). The program provides individual and
group counseling, personal advocacy, outreach and education to victims of
crime and trauma. And thanks to state and local grants, the support of Mount
Carmel and the Mount Carmel Foundation, services are free of charge.
“People ask me how I’ve gotten through this life-changing experience,” said
Herrmann. “My first response is having God in my life, which gives me strength
to face each day. My second response is CTAP. It’s helped me get through
each new challenge and event. And without this program and Tammy Moore,
my counselor and healing voice, I would not be where I am today.”
Herrmann encourages others in need to ask for help, take back control and
move forward. And for many crime and trauma victims CTAP is the first step.
If you’d like to help support this program, please
use the enclosed donation envelope or visit
mountcarmelfoundation.org. To learn more
about CTAP services, call 614-234-5900.
Cardinal Health Grant
Brings Family Health and Wellness to Franklinton
In 2011, the Mount Carmel Foundation received $25,000 from the Cardinal
Health Foundation’s Essential to Wellness Grant Program to develop health and
wellness programs for children and families in the Franklinton neighborhood. The
funding has already been put to good use.
The grant has provided financial assistance to the Mount Carmel College of
Nursing to establish an anti-obesity program at Avondale Elementary, offer the
Girl’s Life puberty and adolescence program to Franklinton neighborhood girls,
and purchase additional computers and equipment for the new Lower Lights
Christian Health Center/Nursing Center at Mount Carmel West.
Together the programs are breaking down barriers to health and wellness
programs, helping kids and their families make healthier choices, and expanding
access to patient-centered primary care, medications, health education and case
management.

Mount Carmel St. Ann’s
Project GRACE
We’re calling the expansion Project GRACE, which stands for Growing Regional
Advanced Centers of Excellence. And the project will do far more than
construct buildings and expand services on the Mount Carmel St. Ann’s campus.
It also will have a considerable economic impact on our community at a time
when it couldn’t be more needed.
Construction alone is expected to support more than 200 new jobs and have
a $35 million impact on the Westerville economy. And when the project is
complete, we’re expecting to add more than 300 new full-time employees and
expand our impact on the Westerville-area economy to $590 million a year.
That’s an increase of $75 million annually. That means Project GRACE will not
only improve the quality of care in our community, but the quality of life as well.
Meeting the healthcare needs of our
community has been Mount Carmel
St. Ann’s unwavering purpose for over a
century. It’s a legacy we’re committed to
advancing now and in the years to come.

Dr. Robert Turner Receives 2012 Dr. Tom F. Lewis
Raises $600,000 to Establish Clinical Skills and Simulation Center
Spirit Of Philanthropy Award
Thanks to the generosity of more than 500
physicians, corporate partners and community
leaders, the Mount Carmel Foundation’s 13th annual
Champagne & Diamonds gala raised $600,000 to
help establish the new Mount Carmel Clinical Skills
and Simulation Center.
Dr. Robert Turner, a Mount Carmel orthopedic
surgeon who has dedicated more than a
quarter century to serving local studentathletes, received this year’s Dr. Tom F. Lewis
Spirit of Philanthropy Award.
The Clinical Skills and Simulation Center will be a
system-wide training resource located on the Mount
Carmel West campus in the 777 West State Street
medical office building. It will feature high-fidelity
human-patient simulators that will allow physicians,
residents, nurses, EMS works and students to
practice medical procedures, laparoscopic surgical
skills and emergency situations without real-life
consequences.
The Mount Carmel Foundation extends its sincere
thanks to everyone who contributed to the success
of this year’s event, including Mount Carmel East
and West Physicians (Title Sponsor); Emergency
Services, Inc., (Diamond Sponsor); and AEP, Mount
Carmel Columbus Cardiology Consultants and PNC
(Platinum Sponsors). With their generous support
and that of every Champagne & Diamonds donor,
the Foundation was able to meet its goal of making
the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center a reality.

infants and mothers alike. As a new
working mom who’s breastfeeding,
transitioning back into the workforce
can present a challenge in continuing
to provide breast milk. But Mount
Carmel is turning that challenge into
an opportunity for its associates who
are also new moms.
The garden was designed to be built in 2-3 phases over several
years, and is being funded 100% through philanthropy. Much of
the funding has come through the annual Associate Giving Appeal,
which has generated $50,000 in donations from Mount Carmel
St. Ann’s leaders and staff. That figure, along with a generous gift
from the family of late Mount Carmel St. Ann’s CNO Tammy
Weidner, and $80,000 in matching funds from the Mount Carmel
Foundation, has brought the grand total for the project to
$130,000. With Phase 1 complete, planning for the build-out of
Phase 2 will begin.
The Mount Carmel Foundation would like to thank the many
associates and physicians, whose generous contributions
enabled the construction of this beautiful space.
“Kangaroo Care” Improving
Mother and Infant Health
The Mother Infant Unit at Mount Carmel West is piloting the use of
specially designed slings for skin-to-skin newborn care. Also known
as Kangaroo Care, the practice is based on 40 years of research and
hundreds of studies that show infants who are held skin-to-skin against
their mothers right after birth have an easier transition to newborn life.
Mount Carmel has long been encouraging skin-to-skin care with breast
feeding patients and is now expanding the process to all new mothers.
“By providing our patients with slings, we’re promoting higher rates of
breastfeeding and milk production, improving the health of our mothers
and infants, enhancing attachment and bonding between parents and
infants, and improving patient satisfaction,” says Courtney Clark, Mount
Carmel lactation consultant. “And those are all good things.”

Other benefits to the
infant include faster brain
maturation, weight gain,
fewer infections, and less
stress and crying. The pilot

On February 23, a dedication ceremony was held at Mount
Carmel St. Ann’s to unveil the completion of Phase 1 of the
Serenity Garden, a beautiful campus garden for St. Ann’s associates,
physicians, patients and visitors to visit, get away and reflect.
Located near the current main entrance at Mount Carmel
St. Ann’s, the garden has several benches for visitors to utilize. It
also features a Founders Wall with special commemorative bricks
in honor of Mount Carmel St. Ann’s leadership circle donors, as
well as a special commemoration in Tammy Weidner’s memory.
Back-To-Work
With funding from the Mount Carmel
Foundation, the Mount Carmel
Outpatient Lactation Program has
instituted a Back-To-Work Lactation
Program for associates. The program
makes hospital-grade double electric
pumps and free kits available to
associates for use in designated pump
rooms at all Mount Carmel hospitals
and the Corporate Services Center.
Breast cancer treatment is a burden for
anyone, let alone patients who are uninsured
or underinsured. Thanks to a new program
from the Mount Carmel Foundation and
two medical product providers, the process
has become a little easier.
Launched with a $35,800 Foundation
grant, the new program is called “Our
Breast Intentions: Breast Reconstruction for
Everyone And Survivorship Testing.” With
generous product donations from Mentor
(breast implants) and Lifecell (alloderm
regenerative tissue matrix), it hopes to
improve how uninsured or underinsured
patients receive cancer care in central Ohio.
While insured patients have federal
protection mandating insurance benefits
for breast reconstruction after surgery,
uninsured or underinsured patients have
limited options and the financial burden
is prohibitive. Genetic testing is also
unaffordable without insurance.
Kristine Slam, MD, FACS, Director of Cancer
Services at Mount Carmel East and Sharon
Inzetta, RN, Oncology Nurse Navigator,
teamed up to make this program a reality.
“We’re continually looking for ways to
improve the quality of cancer care in our
system,” said Dr. Slam. “Being involved in
the everyday care of cancer patients, it was
incredibly frustrating that insurance status
impacted treatment. This generous grant
has allowed us to blur the line between the
insured and uninsured, and instead focus on
what’s most important — the patient.”
In the future, with the support of
Welcome Home and the Foundation,
Outpatient Lactation hopes to offer
similar “back-to-work” programs at
other area employers.
In the meantime, all Mount Carmel
associates on a maternity leave will
receive a coupon with instructions
on how to obtain their free kit. For
associates who would like to learn
more, please contact Mount Carmel
Outpatient Lactation Program at 614234-MILK (6455).
Any uninsured or underinsured patient
receiving care through the Mount Carmel
East or West surgery clinic who meets
the grant criteria can be eligible for breast
reconstruction/fitted prosthesis or genetic
testing for hereditary breast, ovarian, and
colon cancer syndromes. To learn more, call

understanding the Caring Health Practices for the Older Adult.
Shoes filled with beans mimic the pain of arthritis. Heavy gloves mimic the stiffness
of arthritis and loss of manual dexterity. Cotton in the ears mimics hearing loss. And
special eyeglasses mimic the changes in vision. With all that gear on, students then
attempt to open individually wrapped snacks and drinks, read the ingredients and
write on note cards using pencils. It’s an exercise in empathy.
Students describe the experience as eye-opening, frustrating, degrading and mentally
exhausting. Most say it’s unlike anything they’ve experienced before. And all gain a
newfound empathy for the elderly patients they’ll care for in the future.
Funding for this exercise is provided by the Mount Carmel Foundation, which also
provides supplies for health fairs at local senior centers.
