Application for major declaration: Instructions
1) Read and familiarize yourself with the Undergraduate Web Site:
www.infosci.cornell.edu/academics/degrees/ba-college-arts-sciences
We expect ALL IS majors to keep current on matters affecting the major.
2) Fill out the attached degree checklist and background information form. Degree checklists should
include past, current and future courses to the best of your knowledge. A sample checklist is included in
this packet.
3) Print an unofficial transcript from Student Center and highlight the courses that you’ve taken so far
in Information Science.
4) Bring your degree checklist, background information form and unofficial transcript to 110H Gates Hall.
You will be notified via email whether or not you have been accepted to the major. If accepted, you will
be assigned a faculty advisor and their contact information will be sent to you.
When you are assigned an advisor, please schedule an appointment promptly and be
prepared to discuss your academic and career plans. Please arrange all meetings with your
advisor in advance via email.
Criteria for admission to the major
1) Completion of four core courses, one in each of the four core areas: Math and Statistics, HumanCentered Systems, Information Systems, and Social Systems. Courses must be taken for a letter grade.
2) A grade of C or better in each of the completed core courses with an overall average for these courses of
2.5 or better. All qualifying courses must be taken at Cornell.
Courses used in the major declaration GPA computations may be repeated if the original
course grade was below a C. The most recent grade will be used for all repeated courses.
You are expected to read and consult the IS website on a regular basis for updates
and information about the major. You will find answers to almost all of your questions
about the major in the website. Should you require further assistance, please visit us
in 110H Gates or email us at major@infosci.cornell.edu.
