Dorothy remembers the people involved with building her house, especially Fred Cialli and Doug Thomas, two founders of this affiliate, both of whom have passed away. “I didn’t think people like this existed,” she said. But they did. Her house became the second Habitat home in Washington County, completed and dedicated April 12, 1996. The date was inscribed on a wooden plaque signed by all 62 workers on the house. It still hangs right beside the door of the house. Dorothy’s first husband passed away some years ago, and she has remarried. Now that her house is paid off, her daughter and son-in-law are now living in the house at affordable costs. Her daughter worked on the house and grew up in it and now (Continued on page 3) Apostles Build Blitz Build Raises House in Two Days by Becky Hein When the Apostles Build 2 Blitz Build started on Friday morning, June 10th, there was only a deck on the foundation. Saturday evening, June 11th under a rainbow, there was a house with a complete roof and most of the siding. Each day, there were about 80 volunteers who signed in, some working in (Continued on page 4) Wall-Raising Day Brings Out Local Dignitaries on the Educators‟ House by Maureen Theriault The Women Build Educators' House is well on its way to completion! On wall-raising day May 7th, local dignitaries were at the site to thank the volunteers for their time and talents. They included National Superintendent of the Year Dr. Betty Morgan, Diane Serafini, LuAnne Myers, Teacher of the Year Kate Long, Cindy Shank, Julia Albowicz representing Senator Barbara Mikulski's office, and representatives from Lowe's. Wall-raising day was also a celebration of National Women Build Week, sponsored by Lowe's with events across the country. Homeowner Taj has worked right along with the volunteers. Habitat for Humanity Achieves No. 6 On The „Builder 100‟ List Due to the combined building efforts of U.S. affiliates, volunteers and donors, Habitat for Humanity International ranks as the sixth largest homebuilder in the United States, with 6,032 closings in 2010, according to Builder magazine’s annual survey. Each year, the magazine compiles information from U.S. builders and lists the top 100. Even in these difficult times, Habitat’s 2010 home closings increased. Habitat for Humanity of Washington County contributed to this achievement with three closings in 2010.
