Home-owner Pays Off Mortgage, Says “Habitat is a Life-Changer”
July 2011
by Karla Davis
“Once you get in with Habitat, the door is opened to a world you didn’t even know existed,”
Dorothy (Dee) Shupp Pfeiffer said in an interview recently. “I kept thinking the other shoe
was going to drop, but it didn’t,” she remembers as she celebrates paying off her Habitat
mortgage last December 10th, a full five years before it was due.
Dorothy remembers the people involved with building her house, especially Fred Cialli and
Doug Thomas, two founders of this affiliate, both of whom have passed away. “I didn’t think
people like this existed,” she said. But they did. Her house became the second Habitat
home in Washington County, completed and dedicated April 12, 1996. The date was inscribed
on a wooden plaque signed by all 62 workers on the house. It still hangs right beside the
door of the house. Dorothy’s first husband passed away some years ago, and she has
remarried. Now that her house is paid off, her daughter and son-in-law are now living in the
house at affordable costs. Her daughter worked on the house and grew up in it and now

Habitat‟s Mission – Habitat for Humanity of Washington County has a mission to provide safe, decent, and
affordable homes for low-income families in need. Habitat is a hand-up, not a hand-out. Families contribute
hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” and pay back a no profit, no interest home loan with affordable monthly
payments. Families also take financial management classes and gain skills for self-sufficiency and successful
homeownership.

Employees and Retirees!
MiHi (Many Individuals Helping Individuals) recently donated $6,595 to HFHWC
to cover the expense of special features
in the Educators' House. The Educators'
House is being built on Salem Avenue
for Taj and her three children. Taj's
oldest son is autistic and, thanks to
MiHi's support, Habitat will be able to
offer special safety features that are not
usually placed in Habitat homes. Habitat
and Taj are truly grateful for MiHi's
support!

Habitat for Humanity
Achieves No. 6 On The
„Builder 100‟ List
Due to the combined building efforts of
U.S. affiliates, volunteers and donors,
Habitat for Humanity International
ranks as the sixth largest homebuilder
in the United States, with 6,032
closings in 2010, according to Builder
magazine’s annual survey. Each year,
the magazine compiles information
from U.S. builders and lists the top
100. Even in these difficult times,
Habitat’s 2010 home closings
increased. Habitat for Humanity of
Washington County contributed to this
achievement with three closings in
2010.
