Summer Reading Assignments - Middle School - 2012
6th Grade Reading (Mrs.Barros):
“Seedfolks” by Paul Fleischman. Students should take notes on each of the characters.
7th Grade Reading (Mrs. Fraser):
Students will read three (3) books in preparation for English class.

Read Boy by Roald Dahl (copies available in the main office).
Read two books, each from a different genre of your choice. Choose books from
two of the following genres: historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction,
contemporary young adult fiction, adventure, or mystery.
Please read carefully and keep a very brief set of notes for each book you read. Your
notes might include title, author, and short descriptions of setting, characters, conflict,
climax, resolution, and theme/main idea. In September, you will do at least two
assignments based on your summer reading.
8th Grade Reading (Mrs. MacDonald):
Please read at least three (3) books this summer:

Tangerine by Edward Bloor (copies available in main the office)
The Outsiders By S.E. Hinton (copies available in the main office)
At least one book from a genre of your choice (fantasy, contemporary young
adult, historical fiction, romance, mystery, sports fiction,
biography/autobiography, horror).
In September, you will have a test and two writing assignments based upon summer
reading; keep a set of brief notes on the title, author, plot, characters, setting, conflict(s)
and theme(s) for the required books and one of your free choices. A chart to help you
keep track of notes is available on Mrs. MacDonald’s MOODLE English 8 page
(www.lenoxps.org, LMMHS Website). The one-time-only keyword to access it is Hank.
You are highly encourage to read five or more books (including your three for English 8)
so you can get a jump start on your way to winning the 8th grade Bibliophile Award.

(available in the main office)

reading.
Honors should read a total of at least 4 books for their English 9 summer reading.
In addition to reading the books, you must keep notes on each. Upon returning to school
in September, your notes will prove valuable for class discussions and test prep. They
will also be your first homework grade.
9th Grade World History (David Fisher):
Honors students are to read Burn My Heart by Beverley Naidoo (available in the main
office). This assignment is work a major project grade. Assignment is due the first
day of school. Assignment packet available in the main office.
College Prep students are to report on the news OF THE WORLD by completing five
(5) “5Ws News Reporting” over the course of the summer. This assignment is worth a
major project grade. Assignment is due the first day of school. Assignment packet
available in the main office.
10th Grade English (Robin Getzen): (Honors and College Prep)
Students are required to read three (3) books:

The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger
10th Grade History (Joe Stieb): (Honors)

11th Grade English: (Honors American Literature)
Honors American Literature students are required to read five (5) books.
Two (2) books are required:
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain
Sula, Toni Morrison
We will begin in the fall with these works and they will occupy class discussion and the
writing for the course over the first several weeks of the first quarter.
A third and fourth book must be selected from the list of recommended titles given
below.
The final selection is a free choice, but you are welcome to consult with Dr. Weaver
(bweaver@lenoxps.org).

Summer Reading for Honors Psychology (David Fisher):
Students are required to read:
Tales of Psychology, Alma H. Bond
Assignment:
Write two (2) x 300-Word Essays. (600 words total, typed and double-spaced)
Due on the first day of class.
Each essay should be about one of the short stories in the book and your personal
experience with the psychological concept that is explored in that story.
The editor of this collection follows each story with an analysis of at least one
psychological concept that is fundamental to the narrative. I want you to describe a
situation or experience where you encountered similar concepts or ideas or had similar
thoughts. Pick only those stories that you really have something to write about.
All work must be done using a computer in order to get credit. Double-space all work!
