Summer Reading Assignments - Middle School - 2012
6th Grade Reading (Mrs.Barros):
Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman. Students should take notes on each of the characters.
7th Grade Reading (Mrs. Fraser):
Students will read three (3) books in preparation for English class.
-
Read Boy by Roald Dahl (copies available in the main office).
Read one additional book from a different genre of your choice. Choose books
from two of the following genres: historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction,
contemporary young adult fiction, adventure, or mystery.
Please read carefully and keep a very brief set of notes for each book you read. Your
notes might include title, author, and short descriptions of setting, characters, conflict,
climax, resolution, and theme/main idea. In September, you will complete at least two
writing assignments based on your summer reading.
8th Grade Reading:
Beginning in the fall both eighth grade English and history classes will discuss what it
means to be an American. In social studies you will begin exploring this question with a
study of the American Revolutionary War. Your summer reading includes three
historical fiction books set during this time period:
-
Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson (copies available in main the office)
April Morning by Howard Fast (copies available in the main office)
My Brother Sam is Dead by James and Christopher Collier (copies available in
main office)
You must read at least one of the suggested titles. As you weigh which book to select,
you will find that April Morning is a classic with more difficult language; it follows a
male protagonist and contains battle scenes. Chains little easier and follows a female
protagonist; its content deals with both slavery and the Revolutionary War. Mo Brother
Sam is Dead is also a little easier and follows two male protagonists.
In the fall, you will be tested on your understanding of the plot, characters, and themes of
whichever book you choose. You should take notes using the notes template which can
be found on MOODLE.
To challenge yourself and to start the year with a deeper understanding of the
Revolutionary War, you may decide to read TWO OR MORE of these books over the
summer.
