Sparta and Athens were notorious rivals. Each had very different ideas about just about everything. From an exceptionally young age, Spartan boys were trained to withstand pain and fight for their city-state. Sparta’s government was an oligarchy with two kings, and Spartans were trained to obey them. On the other hand, Athens was a democracy, a type of government where all people share power. Athenians believed that to make good decisions, boys in Athens needed to be well-rounded and learn about laws and government. They learned to read and write and studied philosophy and mathematics. Both city-states were powerful forces, and sometimes, they worked together to fight off enemies. However, more commonly, they fought bitterly against each other. Under the leadership of Pericles, Athens crafted a 30-year truce, or time of peace, with Sparta. During this period, the areas that had an alliance with Athens; an alliance is an agreement between groups to protect each other. Athens grew exceptionally wealthy and powerful.
