Grade K-5 Teachers – Literacy
(This also includes: Grades 3-5 Bilingual Teachers, Special Ed. teachers, Title 1
teachers and coaches.
Clarification on the Professional Learning Days 2013-2014
The Professional Learning Department would like to inform you of the cancellation of the August
26-27, 2013 Professional Learning Days. Please disregard the Human Resource notification
that was sent out on May 1, 2013. The 26th -29th of August will now be building directed. Two
out of the four days will be teacher work days and the other two will be site based professional
learning. Your principal will be informing you of what these days will look like in your building.
The Professional Learning Department would like to inform you that for the 2013-2014 school
year selected elementary literacy teachers will be required to attend up to 8 hours of paid
professional learning in August or September of 2013 to learn about the K-5 language arts
curriculum. This includes, K-5 teachers (3-5 bilingual teachers only), coaches, Title I, and
Special Education teachers.
Teachers will be given two choices to receive professional learning in August or September.
The professional learning will include training on the Teachers College Reading and Writing
Project Units of Study in Opinion, Information and Narrative Writing and on the scope and
sequence of the language arts curriculum.
The teacher professional learning options are as follows:
Registration begins May 24, 2013, please register by June 10, 2013. Please register for one
option only, either option A or B.
Option A:
This option will include one day of training on either August 21 or 22, 2013. Please select one.
Teachers will receive compensation for attending option A. Registration will be required in My
Learning Plan.

Option B:
This option will include one day of training. Teachers should select one according to grade
level. Teachers will not receive compensation, but will be provided with a substitute to cover
their classroom so teachers may attend the training during the instructional day. Additional days
will be scheduled if needed. Please note that the dates listed below are subject to change
depending on availability of the trainer.
