Paper 1 Level 4 exemplar 1 comments
- In the structured questions, the candidate demonstrated a sound understanding of the curriculum content in
analysing, synthesising and interpreting a range of geographical information including maps, photograph evidence
and data.
- The candidate was able to demonstrate evaluative and inferential skills in examining a range of geographical
evidence in a systematic way.
- The candidate was able to communicate his/her knowledge and understanding with competent and accurate use of
a range of geographical terminology, such as when discussing the impact of cattle rearing on the physical
environment of the Amazon Basin.
- Nevertheless, the candidate failed to provide an accurate explanation for the effectiveness of reforestation in
conserving the forest in the Amazon Basin.
- In the short essay question, the answer lacked detail in the candidate’s description of the characteristics of the
physical environment of the Sahel region.
The candidate also showed limited knowledge of the effectiveness of
arable farming in increasing food supply in the Sahel region.

- In the short essay question, the candidate was only able to give a basic description of the occurrence of tectonic
hazards along the Circum-Pacific belt.
- The candidate’s discussion of the effectiveness of land use zoning in reducing the impact of the tectonic hazards
lacked depth.

In the structured question, the candidate gave an accurate interpretation of the weather chart.
However, he/she
failed to provide an accurate explanation for the declining relative humidity.

In the short essay question, the candidate was able to explain the changes in rocks in the rock cycle.

The candidate was able to discuss in detail the influence of granite on the formation of landform features.
However, he/she should also have discussed the influence of granite on the shaping of the overall landform in
Hong Kong.
Also, his/her answers lacked a discussion of the influence of extrusive igneous rocks.
