Texas Success Initiative and Pre-Assessment Activity: Effective 08/26/2013 The state of Texas has mandated that every non-exempt student entering a public college or university must complete The Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA). A Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA), prior to taking the TSI Assessment, is required. Students must complete the TSIA Pre-Assessment Activity and then take the TSIA test before starting college. The TSIA PAA is available online through eConnect. It consists of watching a video and completing a practice test. https://econnect.dcccd.edu/CreditStudentMenu.jsp The Texas Success Initiative Assessment or TSIA requires assessment, remediation when necessary and advising of students who attend a public college or university in Texas. The TSIA measures your skills in writing, reading, and math. Your writing skills are assessed in two possible parts, on multiple choice sentence structure, and if needed, a WRITTEN ESSAY. The TSI assessment is adaptive and untimed. Those students scoring below a certain point will receive either a diagnostic component or an adult basic education (ABE) component. Please allow a minimum of 4-6 hours to complete the entire assessment. The entire assessment is computerized. It is not a paper and pencil assessment - even for the writing section. There is a computerized calculator built into the math assessment on a few select questions that are pre-approved for the use of a calculator. The only thing you need to bring with you to your college testing center is a Photo ID and a referral form. All portions of the assessment are multiple-choice, except for the essay. The TSIA is an adaptive assessment. That means that the difficulty of each question will depend on how you answered the previous question. The questions will get harder and worth more points as you answer correctly. You get fewer points when you answer incorrectly. The higher points will result in a better score. Because the assessment is designed this way, for all multiple choice questions, you MUST submit an answer in order to move on to the next question. You cannot go back to previous questions. The TSIA is free the first time that you assess. Re-assessments are $10 per subject area or $40 for the entire assessment. Please see an advisor for a re-assessment referral form. Remember that taking the assessment seriously, and doing your best the first time is to your greatest benefit. (Bring your referral form and payment receipts to Testing Center when you are ready to test.) Students who want to complete their CORE courses, transfer to a university, or are pursuing an associate of arts or science degree will also be assessed on their computer literacy skills. Please be sure to ask your academic advisor if you will be required to complete the computer literacy portion of the assessment. After completing the TSI ASSESSMENT, it is important that you discuss your scores with an Academic Advisor who will be able to help you interpret your scores and select classes—not the Testing Center. New to college students will attend orientation to meet with an advisor and register for courses. Returning students, if eligible may self-register online. Computer Skills Placement (CSP): 70 questions, 70 minute time limit. This section will cover: Basic Concepts of IT - Using the computer & Managing Files - Word Processing - Spreadsheets Presentation - Information & Communication Select • • • • • Your Assessment Date (see reverse side) Bring an assessment referral form AND a valid photo I.D. The first assessment for each section is free. Retakes are permitted as often as you want during scheduled times and cost $10 per subject. Scores are immediately available, unless an essay score is pending. See an Advisor after assessment or if eligible register online.
