IU Graduation - Graduation programs are scheduled for May 9 and 10 at IU. Most
area hotels have been booked for several months. With this also being Mother’s Day
weekend, Bloomington will be very busy. There will be a lot of traffic and, most
likely, some confusion on the streets of Bloomington.
FREE Postcards available – A wide variety of postcards are available, free to
patients, at the Patient Center. They include the Bloomington area, IU facilities, IU
sports and areas around the county. Stop in at the Patient Center if you are
interested.
Open Art Studio at Jill’s House, 751 E. Tamarack Trail, Wednesdays 3:00 – 5:00 –
We’re excited to offer this programming at Jill’s House and hope that more patients
and their family members will take advantage of it. This relaxed, comfortable
environment will allow you to create and de-stress! Each week, Art Therapist, Paula
Worley, welcomes you with a new project that any one of any age or artistic talent
can participate in. The Art Studio is open and available for you to use throughout
the week also. If you have a passion for a specific art medium, talk to Paula. If you
are having trouble with your vision, coordination or any other symptoms that you
believe may prohibit your participation, talk with Paula. To discuss your needs with
Paula, you can email her at peworley@gmail.com, include IUPTC Open Art Studio in
the memo line. We are so fortunate to have Paula and art therapy available for our
patients.
Proton Therapy Systems Tour – Sunday, May 4, 10:00 – noon. This is a great
opportunity for your family and friends to get a behind-the-scenes tour. Participants
must be at least 13 years of age, may not be pregnant and those who require a
pacemaker are not eligible. Cameras are permitted. To RSVP, please contact Nancy

Machine Shop Tour – Wednesday, May 28, 11:00 – 11:30 am - This is an
opportunity to see patient-specific devices (apertures and compensators) being
made and learn about the advantages of having an in-house Machine Shop. To

Discounted golf options for patients – Most area golf courses offer discounted rates
to patients and their families. See the back page of this calendar for local golf
options. To guarantee these rates, please pick up at Identification Card at the

Free haircut for pediatric patients – A local salon has offered one free haircut to all
pediatric patients. To schedule a haircut, contact Nancy at 812-349-2153.
Wonderlab tickets – Wonderlab Science Museum, 308 W. 4th Street, open every day
except Mondays, patients and their families can receive free children’s admission
(adults $7) tickets to this interactive museum that children love. Call Nancy at 812349-2153 for tickets.
LOGO- WEAR - We have long and short sleeved gray t-shirts with the IU Health
Proton Therapy Center logo available on site. They are on display in the cases just
inside the front door to the Proton Center. Adult long sleeve shirts are $20, short
sleeve $15. Children’s long sleeve shirts are $15 and short sleeve are $10. Hats
are $15 each. Payment options include cash, check (payable to IU Health Proton
Therapy Center) or charge. These items are available at the Patient Resource
Facility, Monday through Friday 8:00 to 5:00 or call 812-349-2153. Additional logo

Proton Center on Mondays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. If you have questions, need

May Downtown Bloomington Gallery Walk –By Hand Art Gallery, 101 W. Kirkwood,

Exotic Feline Rescue Center – 2221 E. Ashboro Road, Centerpoint, IN, Highway 46
West, after Bowling Green, turn right on 200E, turn right on East Ashboro Road
(about a 45 minute drive from Bloomington), open Tuesday – Sunday, 10:00 – 5:00
pm, $10 adults, $5 children under the age of 12. This is one of the largest rescue
centers in the United States for abused, unwanted and neglected exotic felines. Over
220 exotic felines call the EFRC home.
Explore Historic Bloomington – The Bloomington area boasts thirteen Historic
Walking Tours, each of which is self-paced and highlights the architecture and local
history of Bloomington – Indiana’s limestone capital. To download brochures and

Brown County State Park – located about 10 miles east of Bloomington on Highway
46 East. There is always something to do in Indiana’s largest State Park – Aquatic
Center, horseback riding, mountain bike trails, fishing, tennis and more. The Abe
Martin Lodge, located inside the park, boasts and indoor water park, with slides,
water channel, fountains, drop buckets, waterfall and more. You can also visit the
Abe Martin Lodge Little Gem Restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner. For more

Chocolate Moose – 401 S. Walnut – a local favorite for ice cream treats. You must
make a stop at the Chocolate Moose while in Bloomington.
Red Mango -1793 E. 10th Street, serving all natural, nonfat frozen yogurt with many
toppings, also smoothies, fruit parfaits, and probiotic iced teas. Yummy!
Griffy Lake - Griffy Lake is a 1,200 acre nature preserve located just minutes from
downtown Bloomington. Originally designed as a supply for city water, Griffy is now
a paradise for the avid outdoor person. The lake itself is 109 acres and has an
average depth of 10 ft. There are many hiking trails around the lake, fishing is
permitted, rent a canoe or rowboat, sunbathe or picnic. Only non-motorized boats
are allowed.
Directions from Milo B. Sampson Lane: Take 45/46 Bypass east to Matlock Road,
turn left on Headley Road - Griffy Lake Boat House is at 3300 N. Headley Road.
Bluespring Caverns – Myst’ry River Voyage – 1459 Bluespring Caverns Road,
Bedford (directions at www.bluespringcaverns.com), open every day 9:00 – 5:00,
$14 adults, $8 children 3 – 15. This hour-long boat tour is piloted by a tour guide
along the course of a subterranean river for over a mile, pointing out native rare
blind fish and crayfish in their natural setting and explaining the natural forces that
are yet at work creating great chambers below the rolling hills. Cavern temperature
is 52 degrees, so bring a jacket.
Marengo Cave – Located in Marengo,IN about 1 ½ hours south of Bloomington,
gemstone mining, cave simulator, hiking, canoeing, picnicking and more. Cave
temperatures remain about 52 degrees, so a light jacket is recommended along
with comfortable walking shoes.

Conner Prairie Interactive History Park – Located in Fishers, Indiana, just north of
Indianapolis, this 200-acre park’s focus is on immersing visitors in mid-19th century
Indiana. Guests get hands-on experiences in virtually every aspect of prairie life,
from blacksmithing and weaving to milking cows and planting vegetables. You can
also take part in 19th-century style recreation, such as balloon ascensions or an oldtime game of “base ball”. For more information, visit www.connerprairie.org.

Indianapolis Children’s Museum – 3000 N. Meridian (30th & Meridian), open Tues –
Sat, 10:00 – 5:00 pm, adults $18.50, seniors $17.50 (60+), children 2 – 17
$13.50.
Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument – Monument Circle, downtown Indianapolis, a 284
foot monument erected to honor Hoosiers who were veterans of the American
Revolution, the Mexican-American War, the US Civil War and the Spanish American
War. The basement of the monument contains the Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War
Museum, a museum of Indiana history during the American Civil War. There is an
observation deck at the top of the monument that can be reached by stairs at no
cost or by elevator at $2 (there are an additional 30 steps to the very top). The
monument is about 21 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty.
Huber’s Farm Market, Winery, Orchard & Barnyard – 19816 Huber Road, Borden, IN
(about a 70 minute drive southeast of Bloomington, Mon – Fri 11:00 – 7:00, Sat –
Sun 11:00 – 6:00 pm. There are lots of children’s activities (inflatable slides, miniriding tractors, cow train, live pony rides, cat fishing (bait & pole included), wagon
rides, drive-your-own “buggy” through scenic wooded trails. For more detailed
