ENTRUST THE GOSPEL TO OTHERS

The Main Thing:

 The value of the gospel motivates us to invest in faithful disciples who will share the gospel and multiply their faith. Look at the biblical pattern of discipleship and help your disciple know how to select the right people.

Q: As you think about this year or semester what do you hope God will do through you?

Last semester we talked about how we can have the greatest impact by making multiplying disciples. Look at Jesus' and Paul's pattern of discipleship.

THE BIBLICAL PATTERN OF DISCIPLESHIP

Read Luke 6:12-13 and Mark 3:13-14

Q: What do you notice about Jesus' pattern of discipleship?

A:

1. Prayer – preceded the decisions that He made

2. Selection – chose specific men to work with

3. Training – spent time with them so that they might learn from him

4. Evangelism – sent them out to share the gospel

Read 2 Timothy 2:2

Q: What was the message that Paul entrusted to Timothy?

A: The gospel.

Q: What was Timothy to entrust to others? How was he to do so?

A: Timothy was to entrust the gospel to others by finding faithful men who would teach others also.

Q: Why do you think Paul chose Timothy?

A few interesting things to know about Timothy are that he was young, he was timid, and he lacked confidence. But God is more concerned about our availability than our ability. We can see that though Jesus and Paul always served and taught the masses, they both prioritized a few key people who would take the gospel to the world.

WHO DO I CHOOSE?

Because of the great value of the gospel, we need to entrust the gospel to those who will be faithful to teach others. Here is a helpful acronym that helps us discern who is ready to be discipled:

Tip: Write out the acronym FAITH, and as you write each word ask them what they think that word means.

● Full of faith

○ Trusting in the promises of God; a person is faithful when he/she passes on what he/she has learned

● Available

○ Willing to make time and prioritize being involved in discipleship with you, to be a part of ministry on campus

○ Available to be used by God

● Initiative with others

○ Initiates in conversations and evangelism, socially and emotionally mature

● Teachable

○ Demonstrates a willingness to learn and grow by responding in action (this can be clearly revealed in their willingness to share the gospel with others)

● Heart for God and for the lost

○ Desires to live a surrendered life of obedience to Jesus and demonstrates a willingness to share their faith

○ Actively praying for the lost

Q: Do you know someone who displays these five characteristics and has demonstrated them in prayer and evangelism?

Tip: Talk with your disciple about anyone they could begin to disciple. They should not be looking for perfection, but evidence of these characteristics. Pray together that God would help you lead others to Christ who will become multiplying disciples.

THE IMPACT

Q: What is at stake for our campus if we do not select well? For the world?

A: If we entrust the gospel to people who are not faithful to share it with others, the Great

Commission will not be fulfilled in this generation. Our desire is to invite as many people as possible  into  Christ’s  kingdom— therefore we want to entrust this message to the most reliable people who will pass it on and multiply.

2

Q: How would the campus and world look different if we do select well?

A: As we build disciples who are willing to make disciples we can reach every student in every faculty, every residence, every club, and on every campus with the message of

Jesus. As it says in Revelation 7:9 & 10, one day the Great Commission will be fulfilled — and God could use students who go from our campus to finish the Great Commission in our generation.

Application and Action:

● Share your faith with others and ask God to raise up more disciples on your campus who display these five FAITH characteristics.

● If  you  can’t  think  of  anyone  who  demonstrates  these  characteristics,  pray  and  share   your faith. Trust that God will bring someone to you (they may not yet be a Christian, they may be a new believer, or they may be someone who is already involved with

P2C).

How did it go?
