Ms. Gruwell: Dennis, please hand in your diary homework.
Dennis: I didn’t do it. I don’t see the point in keeping a diary
every day. Why do you want us to do it? All the
teachers have given up on us.
Ms. Gruwell: Not me. I’m here to help you.
Dennis: I don’t need help. Besides, how can keeping a diary
make a difference?
Ms. Gruwell: Writing helps you to understand yourself better. As
soon as you start to write, you will see this.
Dennis: How?
Ms. Gruwell: For example, you can try to write about your family
and your school life. As long as you keep writing about
your feelings or yourself, you’ll find a way to deal with
your bad feelings.
Dennis: Do you really think writing can help us feel better?
Ms. Gruwell: Sure. Have you ever heard of Anne Frank, the
author of The Diary of a Young Girl ?
Dennis: No. Who’s she?
Ms. Gruwell: Anne was a Jewish girl who hid from the Nazis
during World War II. In 1945, her diary was found.
And people were able to know that she had used it
as an outlet for her sad life.
Dennis: OK.... I don’t know whether you’re right or not, but
I’ll give it a try.

☆ Have you ever read Erin Gruwell’s The Freedom Writers Diary?
When Erin Gruwell met her new class, she hoped to make a
change in her students’ lives. However, she quickly found that her
students had given up on their learning. She didn’t want to quit.
Instead, she started to think what she could do to help her students.
One day, Erin asked her class whether they had faced
family problems or racial bullying. After listening to what her
students said, she was so moved that she wanted to help them
find their voices by writing. She began to ask her students to
keep diaries about their lives. Twelve months later, she helped
them publish their diaries in a book. Their book was called The
Freedom Writers Diary. It quickly became a world bestseller.
With Erin’s help, her students “rewrote” their life stories.
Most of them even went to college. Erin’s students’ success
shows us one thing –– as long as teachers teach with hearts, they
can help change their students’ lives.
