Doctors wear the round bell sleeve; the gown is faced down the front and barred on the sleeves with black ­velvet or color indicating the degree; the ­doctor’s hood is large. The doctor may choose to wear the gold tassel on the cap. Masters wear the long, closed sleeve, with a slit near the upper part of the arm; the master’s hood is of more ­moderate size. Bachelors wear the long or pointed sleeve. The color of the tassel indicates whether the degree is in the field of arts (white), fine arts (brown), music (pink), or science (golden yellow). 4 Program Presiding Elder Russell M. Nelson Benediction Elizabeth Ann Calder Recessional Sheri Peterson, Organ Postlude Kymberly Stone, Carillon 5 Commencement Speaker Russell M. Nelson Elder Russell M. Nelson has served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since May 1984. His warm and unassuming manner has touched many who hear his words of devotion and see his ­service to God. The young Russell Nelson was a precocious and inquisitive child—characteristics that led to him s­ kipping from the fourth grade to the sixth grade. His prowess ­continued into high school, where he ­participated in debate, choir, football, and yearbook and still managed to graduate as valedictorian. It was in these years that Russell first entertained the idea of becoming a doctor. He would later say he felt “the finest career that would be available to a human being would be that of a mother. Inasmuch as that was out of the question for me, I reasoned that the second occupation would be medicine. There I could help people every day.” In the midst of challenging college course work, Russell still found time to use his perfect pitch, performing in musicals and plays, including Hayfoot, Strawfoot, in which he met Dantzel White in 1942. Dantzel and Russell m ­ arried three years later in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they had ten ­children—nine daughters and then finally a son. After graduating with high honors from medical school at age twenty-two, Dr. Nelson and a team at the University of Minnesota Hospitals pioneered the development of an apparatus to enable open-heart surgery. Dr. Nelson used this technology to save the lives of many, including Spencer W. Kimball and James E. Faust. Elder Faust later said, “Brother Nelson has touched my heart deeper than any man.” Elder Nelson’s life has been full of balancing many responsibilities. His daughter Gloria remembers her dad organizing his young daughters in a “four-in-a-tub shampoo train” for Saturday-night baths. With a dollop of shampoo on each head, the sisters would shampoo each other’s heads until they heard their father say, “About face,” after which more shampooing would ensue. Despite the rigors of his professional life, Elder Nelson always made time to serve in the Church. Former BYU president Cecil O. Samuelson, who was dean of the University of Utah’s School of Medicine, said, “It was unusual for busy physicians to take time to be involved in the community, to serve in the Church, and to take time to be an exemplary family man. Elder Nelson has done all of those.” In 2005 Dantzel passed away, and later Elder Nelson married Dr. Wendy L. Watson. In his service as an Apostle, Elder Nelson makes a special effort to speak to members around the world in their native language, often ending his talks with his testimony spoken from his own lips in Spanish, Russian, German, Mandarin, French, and other languages. He also serves the Council of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as organist at their weekly meetings.
