ENG3C Essay Assignment
In Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery,” community
members question the lottery and its use, but ultimately go through
with the ritual to its grisly end. This shows that people may have a
tendency to hold to a tradition despite logical arguments against it. In
a 5-paragraph essay, I want you to address the following:
Do we have the right to criticize and challenge traditions and
authority in society? How far should we go in changing what we don’t
like? Are we justified in using violence to change society?
Make sure you have a thesis, introduction, and conclusion. You will
have class time to write your essay including 2 classes in the
computer lab. The essay should be typed and double-spaced. I will
include a graphic organizer and an essay checklist to help guide you
through the assignment.
