There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid. He was fat and bunchy,
as a rabbit should be; and he yearned to be real. The days grew long and the rabbit's coat became
shabby, for the Boy loved him, and wherever the Boy went, the Rabbit went too. London's Unicorn
Theatre (Tom's Midnight Garden, New Vic 2001) brings Margery Williams's timeless tale of The
Velveteen Rabbit to life in this poignant adaptation about love, loss and growing up

by a beggar to whom he sells the shade of his mulberry tree; and a Tu B’Shevat version of The Hatseller
and the Monkeys: the familiar story of a man who sets off to sell his hats, only to have them stolen by a

The Lowline Lab
The Lowline, the organization planning the world’s first underground park in New York City’s Lower East
Side, opens its full-scale technology and landscape lab. The Lab experience is free and open to the public
every weekend through March 2016. It will provide visitors an opportunity to engage and discover how
technology can improve urban lives by reclaiming abandoned urban spaces and creating subterranean
environments where the sun can shine and plants can grow. For the next five months, the Lab will be
free and open to the public, transforming the former Essex Street Market building into a 5,000-squarefoot public space. On the weekends from noon to 4pm, the space will be open for all visitors to learn
about the project and enjoy the environment. During the week, the space will be devoted to the
Lowline’s Young Designers Program (YDP), an initiative focused on hands-on youth education in science,
technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). The Lab will also be home to the new “Bright Ideas”
event series, which shines a spotlight on individuals and ideas that use science, technology, design and
innovation to improve the world. Upcoming panels will be led by: Maria Popova, Piers Fawkes, Marc
Kushner, Raad Studio and Mathews Nielsen.
