Boston Architectural College
Program Description From the Website:
Since 1973, the Boston Architectural College has offered high-school students the
opportunity to work in the BAC studios during the month of July. Our four-week design
exploration program for students entering grades 10 and above is centered on hands-on
studio experience exploring the fundamental processes of architecture and
design. Working individually and in small group teams, students construct scale
models and experiment with a range of design techniques including collage, modelmaking, free-hand drawing, full-scale prototyping, mapping, diagramming and
computer-rendering. In addition to studio work, experience is also gained through
project presentations, visits to local design firms and field trips to new and historic
architecture and landscape architectural design projects in Boston and Cambridge.
BAC Summer Academy students are introduced to the fields of design including
landscape architecture, interior design, urban design and architecture and to the ways
college design studios are structured. Everyone is challenged to think critically and
communicate their creative design ideas to others. Basic design principles and design
thinking are used to come up with solutions to architectural and environmental design
problems. By making physical models, ideas are tested and teamwork is
encouraged. During the course of the month, Summer Academy students expand their
understanding of the impact of design around them and build a body of knowledge
about how design can change communities and improve lives. At the end of July,
student work is on exhibit for two weeks in the BAC Gallery at 320 Newbury St. As a
student in the program, you will leave Summer Academy with a clearer sense of
whether the design fields appeal to you, projects that can strengthen a design portfolio
and design thinking skills that are applicable to many types of work.

Cornell University
Program Description From the Website:
If you're contemplating a career in architecture, or if you'd simply like to indulge your
passion for it, then this intensive program is for you.
You'll spend the mornings exploring architectural principles such as:
• Composition
• History
• Preservation
• Landscape architecture
• Planning
• Urban design
In addition, you'll delve into the nuts and bolts of architecture, including:
• Building construction
• Structures
• Acoustics
• Lighting
• Energy conservation
• Sustainability
Throughout these discussions, the class will also consider the cultural, social, and
political factors involved.
You'll spend afternoons and late evenings in the architecture studio, where you'll put
into practice what you learn in the mornings. Tackling a major design problem is the
core of this part of the program. Small design-studio seminars, intensive individual
instruction, and regular progress reviews will help you prepare for the presentation of
your final project. You'll be able to add your final project, as well as a wealth of
architectural drawings and models, to your portfolio.
A significant highlight of the summer is the introduction to computer-aided design. This
hands-on experience is led by Cornell's world-renowned computer graphics faculty,
using state-of-the-art technology. You'll also take field trips to significant sites in the
area; in past years, students have visited buildings designed by Louis Kahn and Frank
Lloyd Wright. Finally, you will examine works by distinguished contemporary
practitioners.
Students successfully completing the program receive, in addition to a certificate, a total
of six credits for Architecture 1110 and 1300, a letter grade for each course, and a
written evaluation from their instructor. The use of the summer courses to partially or
wholly fulfill basic design requirements is solely at the discretion of the institution that
admits you as a degree candidate. In most cases, students receive transcript credits for
the courses.
These rigorous six-week classes are open to both high school and college students and

require no specialized knowledge or background, just a serious interest in design.

Cornell University Summer College
Program Description From the Website:
From the art studios in Cornell's Olive Tjaden Hall, you can look out onto the cool blue
waters of Cayuga Lake to the north. As a student in this three-week program, you can
draw on this inspiring summer view as you create your own works of art in the
equipment-filled print studio or the high-tech digital lab.
"Art as Experience" combines studio work in a variety of mediums -- from drawing and
printmaking to digital video -- with readings, discussions, and field trips. Through handson investigation, you'll explore visual concepts including:
• representation and abstraction,
• the original and the copy,
• text, image, and digital reproduction,
• the moving image, and
• exhibition and installation.
As a summer student at Cornell you'll tour the university's extraordinary Herbert F.
Johnson Museum of Art and the international collection of new media housed in the
Kroch Library's Rose Goldsen Archive for New Media Art. Additionally, you'll have
access to the extensive collection of books and journals in the Fine Arts Library and the
nightly offerings of films at Cornell Cinema. All of these venues will be excellent
resources for researching assignments and for general study.
Art is more than the techniques of its making. To be an artist in our contemporary world
is to think about ways of communicating meaning through images and mediums. "Art as
Experience" will help you to understand the connections between the two.

twenty students ensure ample attention from experienced college instructors as
students meet the challenges of college-level study and learn how to balance their
workload and social life.
The Summer Challenge program offers a comprehensive college experience, providing
students with a strong, supportive social community. Every day there are planned or

Education Program for Gifted Youth at Stanford
(online)
Program Description From the Website:
The Education Program for Gifted Youth Online High School (EPGY OHS) at Stanford
University is an independent school for gifted students in grades 7-12. The school was
founded in 2006 as a three-year high school, and has since expanded to include grades
7-9. EPGY OHS has been accredited by WASC since 2006 and has been approved as
an online provider by the University of California since 2008.
The mission of EPGY OHS is to provide a stimulating and challenging education that
equips and inspires talented students to academic and professional success. Our
approach to fulfilling this mission consists in an emphasis on rigorous and advanced
academic offerings, the development of skills in written and oral communication,
acquisition of a mastery of the principles of critical thinking and argumentation, and the
promotion of intellectual maturity and responsibility. Beginning at the earliest grades,
this mission informs the academic program that EPGY OHS students pursue, in the
content of its classes, the methods and media of instruction, and the composition of the
required courses of study. Students are guided through their studies by instructors who
are chosen for their expertise and accomplishment in their disciplines and their
experience and dedication to teaching highly talented students at the high school and
college levels.
The flexibility of EPGY OHS academic program and enrollment options, which include
full-time, part-time, and single course enrollment, can accommodate the varied needs
and interests of our students. The online instruction, which combines seminar-style and
directed-study courses on a flexible college-style class schedule, both encourages
independence, discipline, and strong time-management skills and allows our students to
pursue their diverse interests and exceptional talents.
The strong community at EPGY OHS supports students in acclimating to our
academically rigorous environment. Students work closely with instructors, counselors
and each other to achieve their academic and personal goals. Beyond the online
classroom, students engage in a rich array of student clubs that build on student
interests. An intensive residential summer program at Stanford University presents
students with further opportunity to connect with each other and their instructors, while

Bard College Young Writers Workshop
Program Description From the Website:
In the summer of 1983 Simon's Rock began offering a three-week writing workshop for
high school students modeled after the innovative three-week Workshop in Language
and Thinking required of all entering students at Bard College. We are now part of the
National Writing and Thinking Network, the largest consortium of summer writing
programs in the country. Each year 84 academically motivated students are chosen to
participate in the Simon's Rock program. Former participants have gone on to such
colleges as Amherst, Bard, Harvard, Haverford, Kenyon, Princeton, Simon's Rock,
Smith, Williams, and Yale.
Unlike conventional workshops in expository and creative writing, Simon's Rock's
focuses on using informal, playful, expressive writing as a way to strengthen skills of
language and thinking. Out of these informal writing activities, using techniques of peer
response, students develop more polished pieces, ranging from personal narratives to
stories, poems, and exploratory essays.
The workshop sections are small (12 students). This allows for individual attention to
each student and helps to foster the sense of belonging to a supportive learning
community in which students can feel comfortable exploring new directions in their
writing and thinking. Trusting one's own language and voice, learning to think for oneself
and in collaboration with others— these are the qualities and skills that the workshop
strives to develop.
Each weekday consists of three ninety-minute sessions organized as writing and
discussion seminars. Workshop leaders write with their students, and there is frequent
sharing of this informal writing, both in small groups and in the class as a whole.
Discussions of assigned readings — mostly contemporary poems, stories, and essays
— is informal and speculative. The emphasis isn't on arriving at a "correct answer" but
on exploring various ideas about what a text is saying. The texts also frequently serve
as starting points and models for students' own creative writing exercises. These daily
activities are complemented by evening assignments in reading, revising, and journal
writing.
Each week students develop a portfolio of "works in progress" and then meet
individually with their workshop leader to discuss what they have written. Rather than
evaluation, these meetings focus on what the writer is trying to do in his or her writing
and how best to accomplish these goals. By becoming more conscious of their choices
and strategies, students develop the intellectual autonomy expected of them as they
prepare for college.

Columbia Summer School
Program Description From the Website:
Creative Writing is offered by the Summer Program for High School Students in
conjunction with the creative writing program in Columbia’s School of the Arts, one of
the most distinguished creative writing programs in the country. Overseen by Professor
Binnie Kirshenbaum (Chair of Creative Writing), Professor Alan Ziegler, and Christina
Rumpf (Coordinator of High School Program Creative Writing), the creative writing
courses are designed to challenge and engage students interested in literary creation,
providing them with a substantial foundation for further exploration of their creative
work.
On the basis of demonstrated ability and preparation, students enroll in either
introductory or advanced workshops, which allow them to practice their literary craft with
an attentive group of their peers, under the guidance of an experienced instructor.
Students also choose an elective (see Electives). Introductory and advanced workshops
expose students to many aspects of the writing process, including generating ideas,
writing and revising drafts, and editing. To support this work, students read excerpts
from outstanding works of literature in order to investigate what can be accomplished on
69
the page.
Students write extensively and participate in candid, helpful critiques of their own work
and that of their peers. Instructors also examine work individually with students during
conferences. Students are expected to come to the workshops with an openness to
various approaches toward literature and writing.

for teens. Rising 10th-12th graders experience a unique curriculum designed to develop
and support students’ imaginative writing across literary genres. This creative writing
summer program encourages students to challenge themselves technically and
artistically through guided daily writing workshops, one-on-one instructor evaluations,

participants in the program will be uniquely positioned to profit from the literary culture of
the San Francisco Bay Area. By the program’s conclusion, students will produce and
70
perfect quality pieces suitable for publication in their own literary magazine and
professional teen publications.
Students elect a major focus area called a Writer’s Block. In each Writer’s Block, they
will read classic and contemporary examples of the genre, craft and hone their writing
composition, and prepare to present their piece to an audience of readers and listeners.
This year’s Writer’s Blocks include:
• Short and Sweet: Short Story Seminar
• Well-Versed: Poetry Seminar
• The ‘Wright Stuff: Playwright’s Seminar
• The Real Word: Nonfiction Seminar
Diverse afternoon workshops in nontraditional writing genres, such as speech writing,

Iowa Young Writers Studio
Program Description From the Website:
You know you are a writer because you write even when it's not an assignment for
school, because you read insatiably and aspire to write books as amazing as the ones
that make you do that reading/walking shuffle to dinner, because hours slip by
unnoticed when you engage your imagination. You write because there is nothing in the
world like the feeling you get when you finally finish that poem or short story. You write
because it's fun. You write because you have to. Come meet others like you and share
your work at one of the most exciting places to write: the University of Iowa, home to the
Iowa Writers' Workshop, the International Writing Program, and the Center for the Book.
All writers know that writing is a continual process of revising, re-viewing, our work.
Several things can catalyze that process: having blocks of time simply to focus on
writing and nothing else; meeting peers with whom we can share ideas and discuss
challenges; and finding teachers who can help us get to new ways of seeing. The
Studio is not just a place, but a writing community in which you and your writing can
grow.
Writers themselves, our faculty and staff have concrete ideas about how you can make
your own writing more successful. Come to the Iowa Young Writers' Studio and see
what a difference two weeks of intensive focus can bring to your work.
We are now offering two sessions, and we look forward to welcoming more students
from across the country and beyond. I hope you are one of them!

The Juniper Institute for Young Writers at
University of Massachusetts
Program Description From the Website:
The Juniper Institute for Young Writers curriculum provides a rich blend of opportunities
for high school students to write, read, explore and discuss ideas, and learn from
accomplished writers. College credit is available.
Workshops
At the heart of the Institute are daily workshops in poetry and fiction. Working with
faculty and a core group of peers, participants generate new work, revise work in
progress, and form a supportive community of young writers committed to sharing and
receiving feedback on their writing. Enrollment is limited so that each writer has ample
opportunity to present his or her work.
Q&As and Craft Sessions
Q&As with faculty and writers in residence from the concurrent Juniper Institute for
adults allow participants to explore the writer’s life and creative process with worldrenowned authors. Craft sessions with young writer faculty examine aspects of craft and
imagination of particular interest to beginning writers. Recent topics have included:
“[mis]Understanding and [mis]Translation,” “From The Real to the Really Really Real:
Using Truth to Create Fiction,” “Developing Your Imagination,” and “Building Inventory:

Sarah Lawrence College Summer Program
Program Description From the Website:
The Sarah Lawrence College Summer Writer’s Workshop for High School Students is a
unique collaboration between writers and other artists. Directed by distinguished faculty
members, the program gives high school students the experience of writing in a noncompetitive, non-judgmental environment that values the risks and adventure of the
creative process. Each day, participants attend writing and theatre workshops led by
prose writers, poets, and theatre artists. Included in the week are mini-workshops taught
by program faculty and guest artists. Rooted in the Sarah Lawrence College tradition of
one-to-one interaction, the program offers students the opportunity to meet individually
with workshop leaders. Classes are limited to 15 students, with three faculty per
workshop. In addition to workshops, the program includes faculty and student readings,
and a celebration of student work on the last day.
The Writer’s Workshop
The day’s work begins with a creative writing workshop, giving students the chance to
ask “What makes a poem a poem? A story a story?” and “What is the best way to say
what I want to say?” The Writer’s Workshop is a place for students to write, to read one
another’s work, to learn to observe what is familiar and what is not, to transform what
the writer sees into poems and stories. Members work as writers do: generating
material, collaborating and talking, revising and rewriting.

Sewanee Young Writers' Conference
Program Description From the Website:
We offer our students opportunities that are otherwise hard to find, either at high
schools or at other summer programs. Our workshops in playwriting, fiction, poetry and
creative nonfiction are led by writers of significant accomplishment and promise: our
former workshop leaders have won the Roerich poetry prize, been recognized by The
New Yorker as among the twenty best young American novelists, and featured by
“Oprah’s Book Club.” And our workshop leaders really get to know their students, and
vice-versa because we’ve kept our numbers low: workshops no larger than ten, and a
total enrollment of about sixty. And we make space in the schedule for two “one-on-one”
conferences between student and teacher, as well as plenty of informal contact.
We also offer an impressive lineup of well-known visiting writers whose works students
read and discuss. To ensure that each student has meaningful contact with the writers
the students are required to read one book by each of these visiting writers before
arriving. Once on campus the students attend a discussion about each book, led by
either a Sewanee English professor or a Writers’ Conference faculty member. When our
guests arrive, participants will be prepared to get the most out of the authors' readings
and out of the informal discussions that will follow.
We felt strongly that our program should offer a serious course in creative writing, not
just a “get your feet wet” introduction. So we ask participants to specify a genre-playwriting, poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction--before they arrive, and they attend a
workshop focused on that genre. We don’t try to include “College Writing” or “cross
writing,” believing that the serious work we do on creative writing leaves no time for
anything else. In your workshop, you will read and discuss the works of great authors
and try to apply their lessons, free-write and write from prompts, and above all read and
respond to the work of your peers. Our students arrive with widely varying levels of
experience, but nearly all of them leave with a portfolio that they can be proud of, and
75
that we encourage them to read to the group at the end of the conference. Also, and not
surprisingly, they report that their two weeks of intensive reading and writing at
Sewanee have made them better readers and expository writers in high school and
college.

UCSD Writing Online
Program Description From the Website:
"I could write a book," people often say. And they probably could--if they knew what it
takes to shepherd an idea from incubation to publication. If you are interested in
pursuing a career in writing and publishing, authoring a nonfiction book can build your
credentials and help you develop you career. Nonfiction books are represented by
agents and bought by editors/publishers on the basis of a book proposal, not a
completed manuscript. In this course, you will complete a book proposal to share with
agents and editors. You will complete each section of your book proposal under the
guidance of and with instructor feedback, and will participate in online discussions about
selling a book proposal to a publisher.

University of Virginia’s Workshop for Young
Writers
Program Description From the Website:
The Young Writers Workshop of the University of Virginia, established in 1982, brings
together a community of writers with a common purpose: to create a supportive and
noncompetitive environment where teenagers can live and work as artists. Every staff
member has a commitment to writing. The faculty, professional authors interested in
developing new talent, bring practical experience to the workshop setting.
The staff counselors, who are graduates and undergraduates in related fields, broaden
our instructional program as assisting workshop teachers and elective course
instructors. The administrators, also writers, are dedicated to nurturing the artistic vision.
The Young Writers Workshop, housed on the historic grounds of the University of
Virginia, uses the resources of a great institution -- the home of former Poet Laureate
Rita Dove and 1998 Pulitzer Prize recipient Charles Wright--to provide a comprehensive
program for talented young writers.
Our program is dedicated to developing the work of young writers in the range of rising
freshman to seniors in high school. The desire to write is what counts. We encourage
inexperienced as well as practiced writers to apply. You will receive feedback, personal
77
attention, and the level of instruction you need in order to grow. You will also receive
written commentaries from your instructor specific to your progress and suggestions
toward eventual publication.

Vassar Powerhouse
Program Description From the Website:
The Powerhouse Theater Apprentice Training Program will challenge you to look at the
art of theater in new and meaningful ways. Explore the boundaries of theater from the
traditional to the new, from campus to town, from amphitheater to art center. By living,
breathing, and creating theater with peers and professionals alike you will come away
with an experience that will inform the rest of your life.
A Powerhouse day will include morning classes taught by an outstanding faculty, in
acting, voice, movement, directing, and Soundpainting. Powerhouse afternoons feature
rehearsals, workshops, and more, while evenings are filled with performances. Make
your summer one to remember by being a part of our 27th season and help bring great
new theater to the world.
Apprentices in the Powerhouse program choose a discipline (acting, design, directing,
or writing) and then work alongside some of the country’s leading and emerging theater
practitioners for six weeks, observing and participating in the process through which
78
new works are brought to life.
The professional season typically includes two main stage productions, second stage
and workshop productions, and play-reading festivals. The apprentice season typically
consists of up to three outdoor productions, studio productions, site-specific plays,
readings and workshops.
It’s an exhilarating environment. Everyone who is part of the theater community is here
to do “the work,” and that is what everyone talks about during meals and late into the
night in the residence hall. As one apprentice said, “You can always sleep later.”

Dartmouth Debate Institute
Program Description From the Website:
The Institute's schedule and diverse curriculum cover all aspects of cross-examination
policy debate. You probably have not experienced as intense and demanding an
academic setting as the Dartmouth Debate Institute. In order to accomplish as much as
possible in the limited time available, we operate on a full and structured schedule.
Students are required to attend classes from about 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday, and there are usually classes on weekends. The morning schedule
82
includes lectures on the topic, work on generic negative arguments, discussion of theory
and practice, and drill sessions working on skills. In addition, there are classes on
research techniques and other elective courses on a wide range of subjects. The
afternoons are devoted primarily to lab sessions in which small groups work with two
instructors (who are both there) on research, analysis, affirmative cases, and negative
strategies. The schedule also includes practice debates, rebuttal reworks, a complete
tournament, and plenty of library time.
A special feature of the Institute is the focus on individual attention to each debater. A
low faculty-student ratio is maintained so that each student receives individual attention,
and the curriculum is diversified so that each student has an opportunity to work with
virtually all of the instructors. Each debater has the opportunity to design their own
curriculum. Debaters are able to select elective classes on topic issues, strategy, and
skills from a large number of alternatives.
Individual speaking drill sessions are available most evenings. Institute staff in the
library provides individual assistance with research.
We are strongly committed to the idea that students benefit from the opportunity to work
with as many different instructors as possible. Thus, unlike some summer programs, the
Dartmouth Institute does not limit students to working with only their laboratory group
leaders. The variety of classes offered provides each student an opportunity to work
with virtually every member of the staff. Additionally, every instructor is available to
every student for advice on arguments, research, and other concerns.
Students will receive a paper copy of the evidence produced by their lab during the
Institute if they wish, and all the evidence produced in the Institute will be available
electronically.

Public Speaking Institute
Program Description From the Website:
Held exclusively at UC Berkeley, the Advanced Public Speaking Institute is designed
for high school students who are already comfortable speaking in public and are
prepared to make their voices heard.
Students have access to our most experienced speech and debate faculty, trusted
instructors and coaches who gently push the students to hone their speaking abilities
and excel in their persuasive pursuits. Furthermore, students have the unique
opportunity to explore the seat of free speech in Berkeley and the surrounding Bay
Area. Possible excursions include a trip to the famed soapbox center of campus, Sproul
Plaza, comedy clubs, theater events, and slam poetry nights, in addition to nonacademic trips to sporting venues, beaches, and movie theaters.
All students participate in regular group lectures and exercises that cover advanced
speech writing techniques and principles of rhetoric and argumentation in their Core
Rotation, a biweekly morning tutorial that will help students progress as skilled
speakers- no matter their chosen focus.
The camp emphasizes public speaking across genres, allowing students to apply
speech writing, delivery and argumentation skills across a range of public speaking
activities and electives. Participants construct their own personal program by choosing a
“Speaker’s Focus” from a variety of advanced classes, examples of which are listed
below. Students will also have the opportunity to sample other genres in shorter elective
versions of these workshops. At the end of the program, students will have a chance to
deliver their best speeches in a cross-genre showcase for an audience of family and

Program Description From the Website:
The University of Miami Debate Team invites Middle School and High School students
of all experience levels to participate in the Hurricane Debate Institute offering
instruction and practice in: Middle School Speech and Argument Skills, High School
Speech and Argument Skills, Public Forum, Policy Debate, and Student Congress.
HIGH SCHOOL SPEECH AND ARGUMENT SKILLS
The primary goal of the Speech and Argument Skills Camp is to empower students
through public expression to become better thinkers, speakers, writers, listeners, and
leaders. Students in this camp will explore and develop their thinking and speaking skills
through games and exercises involving public speaking (impromptu and prepared), as
well as group problem-solving and discussion. Students will be exposed to and learn of
all the formal styles of debate (Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, and Policy Debate) as
well as parliamentary debate and other communication based activities. Students will
learn to cope with speaking anxieties, to organize and support their ideas, to critically
evaluate and respond appropriately to the ideas of others, and to deliver effective
messages. While the format and content will not directly prepare students to participate
in competitive debate or forensics, it may serve as a precursor to such participation.

University of Michigan Debate Institute
Program Description From the Website:
The Michigan National Debate Institute (MNDI) is a 3-week policy debate workshop with
a curriculum designed for high school debaters of every experience level from top
varsity to novice.
Design
The MNDI curriculum is designed by long-time high school coaches from around the
country who have served on our faculty for many years. Because the MNDI admits
students of every experience level, the faculty has designed appropriate curriculum to
address specific needs of students in their individual classes.
Educational Environment. The MNDI has never had a concluding tournament. This
format fundamentally alters the orientation of both the students and faculty in a way that
encourages preparation for the entire debate season, not just for winning a workshop
tournament. This format allows more emphasis to be placed on individual instruction
with students on debating technique and topic-specific analysis. The sharing and
cooperation encouraged by this format generates a more productive and enjoyable
environment for all involved.

University of Notre Dame: Policy Debate and
Public Speaking
Program Description From the Website:
This track uses a debate format to help you develop skills that will also enhance your
academic work. We will work within the format of policy debate, an exciting component
of Notre Dame’s debate program. Because policy debates present detailed arguments
about one topic, they require strong research and writing skills—skills that will benefit
you in debate and in your academic work.
The first half of the program provides opportunities to develop skill in public speaking
through short informative and persuasive speeches and interviews. We will also watch
clips from film and television programs that illustrate points raised in class. To help you
develop arguments for your debates, we will work with Notre Dame’s extensive library
holdings. You will learn how to use a college library and work with electronic databases
and specialized journals. Field trips will also offer opportunities to gather material for
your presentations. After you’ve gathered evidence for your topics, Notre Dame faculty
and graduate students will help you develop briefs, hone your arguments, and give you
intensive, one-on-one instruction in making presentations.

Introduction to Engineering, Entrepreneurship
and Science
Program Description From the Website:
MIT’s Office of Engineering Outreach Programs (OEOP) in the School of Engineering
(SOE) runs five core programs for middle and high school students. In 1975, the SOE
launched the Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES) Program to
address the low numbers of minority students pursuing advanced technical degrees.
Now the MITES Program is a rigorous six-week residential, academic enrichment
summer program for talented high school students who are interested in studying and
exploring careers in science and engineering. This national program stresses the value
and reward of pursuing advanced technical degrees and careers while developing the
skills necessary to achieve success in science and engineering. MITES is rooted in
MIT's belief in the importance of students from diverse populations to pursue higher
education and careers in these fields.
Selected students build self-confidence in their ability to be successful in a demanding
academic atmosphere, and have a chance to work with and befriend individuals of
different racial, ethnic and other backgrounds. Although admission to MIT is not the
focus of MITES, for its graduates, there is a strong record of successful admission to
MIT and to other engineering and science universities.

Smith College-Summer Science and Engineering
Program
Program Description From the Website:
The Smith Summer Science and Engineering Program (SSEP) is a four-week
residential program for exceptional young women with strong interests in science,
engineering and medicine. Each July, select high school students from across the
country and abroad come to Smith College to do hands-on research with Smith faculty
in the life and physical sciences and in engineering. Girls who will be in high school
(grades 9-12) in fall are eligible to apply for the summer program.
Established in 1990, the SSEP annually serves approximately 100 girls. Since its
inception, more than 1,700 high school students have participated, representing 46 U.S.
states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and 53 foreign countries. More than half of
these students have been awarded need-based financial aid, and 40 percent are
students of color. After the program, participants return to high school better prepared to
tackle tough science courses and better informed about what to expect in college.
Smith College is one of the top-rated liberal arts colleges in the United States and the
nation’s largest college dedicated solely to the education of women. Based in the
multibuilding Clark Science Center, the Smith science faculty employs some of the
finest researchers and teachers in the country. Smith undergraduates don’t just hear
and read about scientific research, they are active participants. As a result, for almost
30 years, Smith ranked third among private liberal arts colleges in the number of women
who have gone on to obtain doctorates in the life sciences. In 1999 Smith became the
first women’s college in the nation to establish its own program in engineering science,
the Picker Engineering Program.
But you don’t have to wait until college to experience the benefits of a Smith education.
The SSEP extends the benefits of Smith’s strong traditions to girls still in high school.
Participants in the summer program are taught by Smith faculty, live in a college house
alongside Smith undergraduate interns and have access to all campus facilities. Central
to the program is a learning environment that is rich in role models, hands-on,
cooperative, investigative and challenging—where girls get all of the faculty’s attention,

second language. These programs consist of sequences of formal language courses
offered for full academic credit.
The Institute’s programs are of interest to Penn State undergraduate and graduate
students in a range of academic and professional programs, including the liberal arts,
the sciences, engineering, business administration, agriculture, communications, health
and human development, and many others. The Institute welcomes students from other
academic institutions, as well as military personnel, professionals, and anyone else
looking to build competency in a foreign language.
The emphasis of Institute offerings is on the development of communicative
competence by fostering speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Secondary
emphasis is placed on exposure to, and the understanding of, the cultures associated
with the languages studied.
Course formats vary across languages and levels. A typical course sequence lasts eight
weeks, with classes meeting two to four hours a day, Monday through Friday. Institute
participants are not required to enroll for complete course sequences, but can select
single courses based on their needs. Single courses last two and a half to six weeks,
depending on the language.

National Institute of American History &
Democracy
Program Description From the Website:
This immersive course will offer a variety of approaches to studying the past, but the
chief feature will be classes conducted "on site" at the abundant historic places in the
Chesapeake region. Readings and classroom work at the College will set the stage for
the site visits by providing essential background on the wider context of American
development.
Instructors will use archaeology sites, surviving period structures, historic landscapes,
battlefields, and a series of museums to guide students in a search for the American
past. Students will take one course, History 216, and may chose from the topic From
the Founding of Jamestown through the American Revolution, or From the American
Revolution through the American Civil War. The class From the Founding of Jamestown
through the American Revolution begins where the old world societies of Europe and
Africa collided with the new world society of Native Americans on the banks of the
nearby James River early in the seventeenth century and follows the American saga for
nearly two hundred years through the Revolutionary Era at the end of the eighteenth
century. From the American Revolution through the American Civil War picks up with
the American victory at nearby Yorktown during the struggle for independence and
continues the story through the fall of the Confederate capital at Richmond to Union
forces in 1865.

Americans for Informed Democracy Global
Scholars Program
Program Description From the Website:
Global Scholar is an intensive two-week academic enrichment program that offers rising
high school juniors and seniors to chance to pursue college-level coursework in
international affairs. Held at American University in exciting Washington, DC, the
program prepares students to be successful thinkers and leaders. Now in its fourth year,
Global Scholar program components include: university style curriculum; riveting
discussions with policy experts and advocates leading debates on key issues; visits to
embassies and Congressional offices on Capitol Hill; leadership, advocacy and
policymaking skill building; a “campaign Idol” competition; and a policy simulation.
Students will make friends in an environment that fosters academic success alongside
summer fun!
Global Scholar prepares outstanding high school students for college, and empowers
them to be “global citizens” in our increasingly interconnected world. The program builds
on a shared insight among university leaders, policymakers, scientists, and business
executives that young people need global awareness in order to excel in their collegiate
studies and in their professional careers. As former US Secretary of State Colin Powell
asserts: “We live in a truly global age… To solve most of the major problems facing our
country today – from wiping out terrorism… to eliminating the scourge of AIDS – will
require every young person to learn more about other regions, cultures and languages.”
Global Scholar provides students with a global perspective that they can draw on
throughout their lives. College provides a special opportunity for students to think
profoundly and critically about the challenges facing today’s world. It is also a time of
great personal growth: students make decisions about their majors, their careers and
their futures. Through challenging coursework on international affairs and skill building
workshops that focus on leadership, advocacy and policymaking, Global Scholar gives
students a jump-start on college success.

Internship Program
Program Description From the Website:
The New York A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute Summer Internship Program is a
competitive program for high school students from across New York. The internship is
an incredibly valuable, enriching summer experience, and a gateway to a lifelong
educational, professional and social network.
Interns are selected from a pool of New York A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute
Peer Trainers. The Peer Training Program awards students the skills to respond to bias
and prejudice. All interns are required to complete the Peer Training Program before
applying for the internship. ADL interns assume various responsibilities within our
offices. From researching hate crimes in Civil Rights to working on programming in
Education, the opportunity for learning is endless. Once a week, interns attend sessions
that focus on career building and the college application process.
One of the key elements of the internship experience is the opportunity to attend the
ADL Grosfeld Family National Youth Leadership Mission to the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. The theme of the trip is social justice. Interns
continue to develop the knowledge, leadership skills, and advocacy tools that are
needed to catalyze change in their communities.
At the completion of the internship, interns stay actively involved with the ADL and the A
WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute. Throughout the year, they attend reunions and
retreats, and former interns are often asked to take a leadership role in shaping these
programs.

Cronkite Institute for High School Journalism
Program Description From the Website:
The Cronkite Institute for High School Journalism is a consortium of programs that
provide support and training for high school journalism students and their teachers.
The institute includes long-standing Cronkite programs as well as several new ones. It
is directed by Anita Luera, a longtime Arizona broadcast journalist and past president of
the Arizona Latino Media Association.
Among the programs are the Donald W. Reynolds High School Journalism Institute, a
two-week fellowship program for 35 high school journalism instructors from around the
country, and two full-immersion summer programs for high school students interested in
journalism—the Summer High School Broadcast Institute and the Entravision Summer
Digital Media Institute.
A major new initiative is the Stardust High School Journalism Program under which the
Cronkite School is supporting struggling high school journalism programs by providing
equipment, training and support. In 2008, the school installed fully equipped multimedia
newsrooms at five underserved Arizona high schools. Five more schools joined the
program in 2009. Dave Cornelius, a longtime Valley educator who built the state’s
premier high school broadcast education program, has joined the Cronkite School as
director of the Stardust High School Journalism Program.
As part of the school’s outreach efforts, Luera visits dozens of high schools throughout
the state each semester. She travels in a Cronkite School vehicle outfitted with a
television camera and other equipment that can be taken into classrooms, job fairs and
other events, allowing students to try out equipment and see themselves on camera.
The program aims to encourage students who might not otherwise have had any
exposure to journalism to consider journalism as a career.
In addition, the Cronkite School supports daylong workshops each year for high school
students, working closely with the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association, the
Arizona Latino Media Association and the Arizona Indian Education Association.

intended primarily for staff members of secondary school media outlets as well
as for high school students wishing to explore journalism as an academic or
career interest;
• Several five-day summer journalism workshops, carrying graduate credit, for high
school teachers;
• Consulting service by the director to Indiana high schools;

Northwestern University's Medill School of
Journalism National High School Institute for
Journalism
Program Description From the Website:
The program is designed for students who wish to become better writers and editors for
print, online or broadcast. Much of what you learn you can apply to your school
newspapers and websites. But the program is broader than a workshop for high school
editors. You’ll study journalism from a “professional’s perspective,” learning from topnotch practitioners and distinguished college teachers.
139
The training you will receive in writing clearly, concisely, and accurately will serve you
for years to come, no matter what your college major or chosen career. Also, you’ll
study with people from all parts of the country (last year, students came from 16 states,
France, South Korea and Washington, D.C.). Frequently, students form lasting
friendships with classmates and teachers.
The National High School Institute, established in 1931, is the nation’s oldest and
largest university-based program for outstanding high school students. Nearly 500
students will enroll in the Institute’s five divisions: Debate, Film and Video Production,
Journalism, Speech and Theatre Arts. Students are affectionately called “Cherubs,” a

The Princeton University Summer Journalism
Program
Program Description From the Website:
What is the Princeton University Summer Journalism Program?
We welcome about 20 high school students from low-income backgrounds every
140
summer to Princeton's campus for an intensive, 10-day seminar on journalism. The
program's goal is to diversify college and professional newsrooms by encouraging
outstanding students from low-income backgrounds to pursue careers in journalism. All
expenses, including students' travel costs to and from Princeton, are paid for by the
program. Students who attend the program come from across the country.
What is the program like?
Classes at the program are taught by reporters and editors from The New York Times,
The Washington Post, The New Republic, The New Yorker, CNN and ABC News,
among other media outlets. Students tour the Times, CNN and The Daily Beast; cover a
professional sports event (a Yankees, Mets, Jets, Liberty or minor league
baseball game); cover news events in the Princeton area; film and produce a TV
segment; conduct an investigative project; author a group blog; and report, write, edit
and design their own newspaper, The Princeton Summer Journal, which is published on
the program's last day. The program is also designed to give students a taste of what
life is like at one of the best colleges in the country—students live on campus and eat in
one of the university's cafeterias—and to prepare them to apply to top schools. Students
meet with Princeton's top professors as well as the school's president and its dean of
admissions. Students attend seminars on every aspect of the college admissions
process. They also take a practice SAT and attend an SAT class taught by Princeton
Review. After students return home, program staff remain in contact with them,
assisting them during the college application process and helping them to apply for
journalism internships once they are in college.

Admission Eligibility
Rising seniors with at least an unweighted 3.5 GPA and the combined income of your
custodial parent(s)/guardian(s) plus child support payments, if any, must not exceed

Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists
(PROMYS)
Program Description From the Website:
PROMYS is a challenging program designed to encourage ambitious high school
students to explore the creative world of mathematics. Each summer, approximately 60
high school students from around the country gather on the campus of Boston
University for six weeks of rigorous mathematical activity. Through their intensive efforts
to solve an assortment of unusually challenging problems in Number Theory,
participants will practice the art of mathematical discovery.
Students are advised by resident junior and assistant counselors who have just
graduated high school, as well as college-aged counselors who are embarking on their
own mathematical careers at some of our nation's finest universities (Brown, California
Institute of Technology, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Rochester Institute of Technology,
Stanford, SUNY Stony Brook, UC San Diego, University of Chicago, and Yale, among
others). In addition, the returning students, who share dormitory rooms with the firstyear students, are a constant source of helpful hints and suggestions. Senior

The Ross Mathematics Program
Program Description From the Website:
The Ross Program at the Ohio State University is an intensive summer experience
designed to encourage motivated pre-college students to explore mathematics. During
those eight weeks, students are immersed in a world of mathematical discovery.
Dr. Arnold Ross founded this multi-level program at Notre Dame University in 1957. Its
growth was then spurred by the launch of the Sputnik satellite and the subsequent
surge of interest in science education. Arnold Ross's Program has run every summer
since then, moving to Ohio State in 1964. It is currently sponsored by the University in
partnership with the Clay Mathematics Institute.
The central goal of the Ross Program has always been to instruct bright young students
in the art of mathematical thinking and to inspire them to discover for themselves that
abstract ideas are valuable and important. First year participants take the basic course
153
in number theory. For most students, this is the first time they are asked to consider
entirely new questions, to develop methods that they have not seen before, and to
justify every answer.
The value of a mathematics education lies not only in obtaining proficiency in
computational tasks, but also in building a foundation for critical thinking. Students who
have never asked why things work the way they do are not prepared to lead the way to
future scientific innovation. It is precisely this independence of thought and questioning
attitude that the Ross Program strives to nurture.

UConn Mentor Connection
Program Description From the Website:
UConn Mentor Connection is a summer program for rising high school juniors and
seniors, held on the campus of the University of Connecticut at Storrs. We believe
students' interests, abilities, and motivation are very important talents. We also believe
that it is essential for students to have opportunities to manifest their talents in high
levels of creative productivity. Our work is based on the following additional beliefs:
• Above average ability, creativity, and task commitment can be developed and
nurtured.
• Creative productivity results from the interaction of above average ability,
creativity, and task commitment.
• All social contexts, including school, the home, and the community, can influence
the incidence of creative productivity. The university setting provides an
especially promising context for creative productivity because first-hand inquiry is
the core of almost all daily work.
• Creative and productive individuals exist in every ethnic and cultural group and
across all socioeconomic levels.

Program Description From the Website:
The aim of the Young Scholars Program (YSP) is to strengthen the participants'
mathematical powers through a deep experience in mathematical thought and effort.
Our intention is to broaden and enrich the students' understanding of mathematics
rather than to accelerate them through the standard elementary or high school
mathematics curriculum.
The Young Scholars Program consists of two programs: the Saturday School-Year
program, which consists of twelve sessions throughout the school-year; and the
Summer Program, which is a four-week day-camp that requires an application and is
significantly more selective. There is no charge for any of our programs.
If you are a student currently in grades seven through twelve who has scored well on
the math portion of the ACT, SAT, or other standardized test, or if you enjoy
participating in math competitions, or if you simply find mathematics to be an interesting
and challenging subject, then we encourage you to attend our Saturday Program. If you
fit the above description but are in the sixth through eleventh grades, we encourage you
to apply to our Summer Program.

Careers in music are not necessarily the goal of students attending the Eastern U.S.
Music Camp. The experience is one that will be remembered and valued throughout life
in any career. The total musical and social experience has made the Eastern U.S.
Music Camp one of the most highly regarded music programs in the country.
For 36 years, Thomas and Grace Brown have directed the Eastern U.S. Music Camp
which is staffed by certified faculty and carefully selected and qualified counselors.
Enrollment is limited in each session to assure students the opportunity for personalized

Indiana University Summer String Academy
Program Description From the Website:
We have completed the 27th year of the Summer String Academy and it was quite a
summer. It was filled with IU Summer Festival Concerts, String Academy student
concerts, master classes, private lessons, chamber music and many hours of practice.
All students participated in two private lessons weekly, chamber music, master classes,
and performances. Younger students played in the chamber orchestra which gave an
impressive performance at the final Gala Concert.
The String Academy requires that students practice 4 1/2 hours a day. At first this
seems like quite a few hours, but most students discovered after a few days that these
hours were not adequate to cover the materials given to them by their teachers. With all
students practicing, four and a half hours go by very quickly. It is inspiring to monitor the
progress that was made during the String Academy, and it is an ideal time to assess
one's skills and to work on reaching the next level.

Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra
Summer Music Institute
Program Description From the Website:
Every summer, approximately 70 students (ages 15-20) from all over the nation meet in
Washington, D.C., to attend the National Symphony Orchestra's Summer Music Institute
(SMI). The Institute offers four weeks of private lessons, rehearsals, coaching by
National Symphony Orchestra members, classes, and lectures to prepare aspiring
musicians for their futures in music.
Several of the students are graduates or current participants of the NSO Youth
Fellowship Program, an orchestral training program for talented young musicians. Also
included are students participating in the Young Artists of Color National Training
Initiative of the Kennedy Center. In addition to their many lessons and training sessions,
the students also perform a series of free Kennedy Center Millennium Stage concerts
that are open to the public. Watch past SMI Millennium Stage performances by
selecting any of the concert dates in the "Watch & Listen" section on the right side of
this page.
The Summer Music Institute is coordinated by the National Symphony Orchestra
Education Program, which is a component of the Kennedy Center Education
Department. Young people, teachers, and families take part in innovative and effective
education programs initiated by the Center, including performances, lectures,
demonstrations, open rehearsals, dance and music residencies, master classes,
competitions for young actors and musicians, backstage tours, and workshops. These
programs have become models for communities across the country, as educators and
government leaders recognize what the Center has known for years: that the arts can
unlock the door to learning for young people, fostering creativity, teaching discipline,
improving self-esteem, and challenging students to think in new ways, as well as
offering them experiences in the joy of the performing arts.

Kinhaven Senior Summer Session
Program Description From the Website:
Presenting glorious opportunities for high-level music-making, personal growth, and
lifelong friendships, Kinhaven's six week long Senior Session is comprised of 90 young
musicians engaged in chamber music, symphony orchestra, string orchestra, large
ensembles, and spontaneous music-making. The experience is one of community,
shared learning, and mutual support in which friendship and encouragement are always
present.
High school age young adults are challenged by a variety of chamber and orchestral
repertoire. Co-Directors Tony Mazzocchi and Deborah Buck lead a faculty of
professional musicians who specialize in working with talented and dedicated young
people. The faculty reside on campus during the sessions and everyone shares
delicious, home-cooked meals together.
Each week of the program, students are thoughtfully assigned a chamber ensemble and
a piece that is appropriate for the group’s ability. A faculty member coaches each
ensemble. In orchestra, where assignments rotate weekly, six prominent conductors
bring inspiring vision to the world of symphonic repertoire. Students are challenged by
works such as Tchaikovsky Symphonies 4, 5, and 6, Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique,
and Brahms First and Second Symphonies. Students also engage in large ensembles
such as string orchestra, woodwind ensemble, and brass and combined ensembles.
Every piece our young artists study and rehearse culminates in public performances
which happen weekly on Fridays and Sundays.
Each student receives at least one private lesson per week, but often teachers meet
more frequently with students to review their progress, help them prepare the week’s
169
repertoire, and encourage productive practice habits. In addition, during the session
three world-class clinicians engage students in master classes.

The American Legal Experience
Program Description From the Website:
American Legal Experience offers high school students a unique opportunity to learn
public speaking skills through a concentrated focus on the American judicial system.
The adversarial nature of the American legal system places a premium on effective
communication and persuasion through well-reasoned arguments. Therefore, our focus
on this system provides students with an exciting and challenging medium for the
development of speaking skills.
American Legal Experience participants will work with experienced public speaking
instructors and a directing attorney to learn the structure of the court systems,
differences between the process of law involved in civil and criminal trials, and most
importantly proper methods of the formation and presentation of convincing legal
arguments. As part of this learning process, students will be directly exposed to the
basics of certain substantive areas of law, including constitutional, criminal and tort law,
as well as rules of evidence.
Past activities have included a visit to a court for first-hand look at the American justice
system at work, participation in simulated client interviews, and professionally critiqued
oral arguments. The weeklong session includes at least two mock trials, including
opening statements, the examination of witnesses and introduction of evidence and
closing arguments. Guest speakers such as area attorneys or judges have been regular
features of recent ALE sessions.

New York Film Academy
Program Description From the Website:
No matter how beautiful the cinematography or impressive the special effects in a film,
audiences are drawn in by the struggles of the characters on screen. On set, as dozens
of crew members whirl about, twelve kilowatt lights bore into the actor's eyes; focus tape
is pulled to the actor’s cheek, and "Action!" is finally called, the actor is still expected to
give a believable and moving performance. In acknowledgment of the importance of the
film actor’s job, and in support of the skills required to do the job brilliantly, the New York
Film Academy is proud to offer its Acting for Film Camp.
Monday through Friday, students participate in a broad array of core classes that
introduce them to finding the actor within, while simultaneously training their instrument
to do the kind of technical, emotional, and physical work necessary for film acting. Each
course concentrates on developing a foundation of acting using training techniques for
theater and film, while our primary focus is on acting for film.
Our Acting for Film Camps are often integrated with our Filmmaking Camps, providing
many one-of-a-kind advantages for the acting camp student interested in working in
front of the camera. While the acting camp students are training, the film camp students
are busy writing scripts and learning the technical aspects of directing. Whenever
possible the acting camp students are given the experience of acting on a live set in
front of the camera on the filmmaker’s shooting exercises and student film productions.
In Addition, as part of their acting camp experience, all non-commuting acting camp
students take part in organized evening and weekend activities including screenings,
and local field trips.
The summer Acting for Film Camps, as well as the Weekend Acting for Film Camps, are
intensive and require a complete commitment on the part of the student. The four-week,
three-week, and one-week acting camps, and the Weekend Acting Camps are designed
for students with little or no experience, while our advanced six-week course is
designed for returning students.
