The brothers had been associated with a team named Richmond Town Association Football Club that had toured France in 1901, before folding due to financial difficulties, and were keen to arrange one more tour. That tour took place at Easter 1906 and involved a relatively short trip across the English Channel to Calais. Tour Dinner at Holiday Inn, East Kilbride. However, it eventually became clear that there was a need to field stronger elevens and, in 1912, the name of the club was changed to Middlesex Wanderers with a view to attracting players from a wider geographical area. The aim of the club remained the promotion the game of Association football by sending representative teams, composed of players from different clubs, on overseas tours and the fostering of good fellowship though sport. An event in 2003 highlighted the club’s importance as a sporting ambassador. At the Japanese Embassy in London, the club was presented with the Ambassador’s Commendation in recognition of its contribution to the promotion of football in Japan and to the cause of friendship between Japan and the United Kingdom. The President of the Japanese Football Association, who was present at the ceremony, said that of all the football visitors to his country, “the most lasting impression has been that made by Middlesex Wanderers, on and off the field, with their friendly attitude and sportsmanship”. Since 1953, a number of Queen’s Park players have toured with Middlesex Wanderers and close ties have been developed between the two clubs. However, only once before have the Wanderers visited Glasgow to play Queen’s Park. That match took place at Hampden Park on 10 May 1989 and ended in a 2-2 draw. Paul Armstrong and Paul O’Brien netted for the Spiders, with Mark Boyland and Charlie Butler replying for the visitors.
