(1) COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES:
Bienvenidos a Español 2040!
Spanish 2040 is the first half of a 2-semester intermediate-Spanish sequence. Listening, speaking, reading and writing are emphasized, and the focus is on the students’ ability to communicate in Spanish.
The course follows ACTFL standards
- engage in conversations in order to carry out intermediate communicative tasks, asking and answering personal questions, describing people and places
- recognize and use intermediate grammatical forms with accuracy (correct usage of direct and indirect object pronouns, comparatives and superlatives, subjunctive etc.)
- write short compositions on relevant topics following standards ACTFL guidelines for intermediate-low students (see http://www.actfl.org/files/public/writingguidelines.pdf)
- demonstrate understanding of the main ideas in examples of written and spoken language such as short stories, film clips, articles, songs, websites and spoken conversation,
- direct and contribute to small group discussion of literature and film selections.
- compare and contrast cultural aspects of different Spanish speaking countries with their own.
(2) REQUIRED TEXTS AND MATERIALS:
1) Enfoques. Blanco-Colbert, 2008.
2) Student access code for Enfoques Student Activity Manual and Supersite (there are instructions at the end of this syllabus on how to register in the Student Activity Manual Supersite )
(3) FORMAT OF THE CLASS
The class will meet two days per week. The class will be conducted in Spanish and will require your active participation. The instructor will speak English with you during office hours, before or after class, and in emails. Although you will be developing four skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing), most of the class time will emphasize listening and speaking. Students are encouraged to consult with the instructor at any time if they have questions or concerns.
(4) CLASS COMPONENTS
Class participation, performance and homework (everyday): I will assign homework from the Enfoques supersite everyday. You are responsible for preparing the assigned material before coming to class. Do not fall behind!. Your scores from these exercises will be accessed by your instructor and will be part of your grade for the course. Moreover, your attendance, preparedness, and participation are evaluated daily during the semester with the rubric found below (15%).

Description
Student is always prepared for class and participates regularly during class.
Student volunteers to participate in class. When working in groups, the student is a valuable team member.
Student is sometimes prepared for class and sometimes participates. When he/she does participate, the student does not volunteer but is called on instead.
When working in groups, the student sometimes contributes.
Student is rarely prepared for class and rarely participates. When working in groups, the student is distracting and often off-task. Student is absent.
Compositions:
During the semester you will write two compositions. Compositions will average one page and will be typed, double spaced with standard margins and twelve-point font. They will be evaluated on the basis of command of the topic covered, organization, grammar, and the use of Spanish. Please see the course policies (posted on webboard) for more information. (15%)
Chapter Exams:
There will be four (4) major written examinations during the semester. These will focus on the material presented in class discussions as well as the vocabulary and grammar presented and studied in the assigned chapter. (30%)
Quizzes:
There will be a series of quizzes that cover assigned readings and short film clips. In addition to the larger quizzes noted in the syllabus below, there may be smaller vocabulary and grammar quizzes as time permits. (20%)
Oral Exam:
There will be one assignment in which you will give an oral instead of a written presentation. Oral interviews will be conducted at the end of the semester.
The times for your interview will be announced beforehand. (10%)

(7) HOW TO SET UP YOUR AVENTURAS SUPERSITE ACCOUNT AND ENROLL IN THE COURSE.
So that you can see your assignments and due dates, receive important announcements, and communicate with your instructor and classmates, you will need to set up an account on the
AVENTURAS Supersite, and then enroll as a registered student in your instructor's course.
Brief Instructions

2.
Enter the Passcode printed inside your textbook.
3.
Choose your username and password, and enter your contact information.
4.
Find your school by selecting Colleges/Universities in Texas.
5.
Select University of North Texas-Dallas from the list of schools.
6.
From the list of available courses, select INTERMEDIATE SPANISH instructor Maria Ciriza.
7.
Select the Section.

(8) MISCELLANEOUS NOTES:
• Attendance Policy: Attendance is taken every day and is a factor in the participation grade. Your attendance and involvement in class are imperative . You will be allowed a maximum of three unexcused absences.
Additional unexcused absences will lower your overall final grade 1% per absence.
• Late Work: No late work is accepted for credit. Students who must be absent may turn in scheduled work ahead of time with the instructor’s permission.
• Make Up Policy: Major assignments may be made up if a student can document a medical emergency or a funeral. Students must notify the instructor of the incident within 24 hours of the missed assignment. The assignment or test must be made up within three days of returning to class. Students who must be absent for any other reason may turn in work early with the instructor’s permission. In class quizzes and daily homework cannot be made up.
