THIS WEEK’S MATCH-UP
The Western Michigan Broncos and Virginia Tech Hokies will meet for the fourth time in program history on
Saturday, Sept. 27 at Lane Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., with the game airing on the ACC
Network and available on ESPN3. The Hokies lead the
all-time series 3-0. The last time the teams met was on
Sept. 11, 2004, a 63-0 win for Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
BULLDOZER
Jarvion Franklin was named the MAC West Offensive
Player of the Week for the second time this season after he rushed for 168 yards and three touchdowns in
the Broncos’ win over Murray State, marking the third
straight game in which Franklin has topped 166 yards
rushing and notched three scores. He is the first Bronco to rush for 100+ yards in three straight games since
Robert Sanford did it in five straight games from Oct.
21-Nov. 18, 2000, and the first WMU freshman to do it
since Sanford did it in the final three games of his freshman season in 1997.
• Franklin currently leads all of NCAA Division I - FBS
with nine rushing touchdowns. Last year, the Broncos
totaled just 10 rushing touchdowns, and the team’s
leader in the category had just six.
• With 211 yards against Idaho, Franklin became the
first Bronco to rush for 200 yards in a game since Phil
Reed did it against Northern Illinois on Oct. 26, 2002.
There have only been 18 200-yard rushing performances since 1961, the earliest such records were kept, and
Franklin is only the 10th different player to do it.
> Franklin leads the MAC and ranks fifth in Division I FBS in rushing with an average of 180.7 yards per game,
an average of 48.9 yards per game better than the second-ranked player in the MAC. His 192.3 all-purpose
yards per game is also first, and is 57.5 more yards per
game than second place.
HE’S ON FIRE
So far in 2014, it’s been three games, three touchdowns
for sophomore wide receiver Corey Davis. The reigning
MAC Freshman of the Year has caught a touchdown
pass in each of the first three games of the season, and
is among the MAC leaders in receptions and receiving
yards per game.
READY TO EXPLODE
Through the first three games of the season, the Bronco offense has been one of the most explosive in the
Mid-American Conference, leading all 13 teams in
points per game and ranking 23rd in the nation. WMU
is pacing the MAC with a 41.3 points per game average
entering the game against Virginia Tech.
• The key to the Broncos’ offensive surge this year has
been a picture-perfect effort in the red zone. WMU
is the only MAC school to remain perfect in red zone
efficiency; in 11 trips to the red zone this season, the
Broncos have scored nine touchdowns and kicked two
field goals.
LONG RANGE STRIKE
Another factor in the Broncos’ successful offensive attack this year has been the ability to notch the big play.
WMU has recorded 21 plays of 20 or more yards this
season, including nine rushes and nine passes. That is
already more than a third of last year’s total (57), and the
www.wmubroncos.com/football
total of eight scoring plays of 20 yards or more is one
more than the Broncos totaled all of last season.
CHANCE ENCOUNTER
Dareyon Chance made the most of the opportunity presented to him against Murray State, ripping off a long
run and nearly breaking the 100-yard barrier on the
ground. Chance finished with 90 rushing yards on 14
carries against the Racers.
SPEED KILLS
Daniel Braverman ranks 16th and 20th in Division I FBS
in receptions and receiving yards per game, respectively, but it was his running ability on a reverse that got
him in the end zone against Murray State. Braverman
did more than just take the reverse pitch; he completely
reversed field again, taking the ball 65 yards for a score
to up the Broncos’ lead. It was the second career rushing touchdown for Braverman, and is the longest scoring play for the Broncos this year.
IN DEPALMA YOUR HAND
Junior walk-on linebacker Grant DePalma has gone
from a member of the scout team to the Broncos’ leading tackler, and is among the top tacklers in both the
MAC and the NCAA. DePalma is averaging 9.7 tackles
per game, a number that ranks seventh in the conference and 30th nationally. He leads the MAC in tackles
for loss per game, averaging 1.5 stops behind the line of
scrimmage per game. He totaled 2.5 TFL in the Broncos’
win against Murray State last week.

HIGHLY TOUTED CLASS BOLSTERS BRONCOS
The news officially came on Feb. 5 that the Western
Michigan football team had produced the highest-rated recruiting class in the history of the Mid-American
Conference. The Broncos’ class ranked 57th in the nation, marking the first time that a MAC school had landed a recruiting class in the top-60 in the nation, and was
also the first time a Bronco recruiting class led the MAC
since 2008.

• According to Rivals.com rankings, the Broncos secured
14 three-star recruits on Signing Day, more than twice
as many as any other conference program.
WELCOME, FRESHMEN
It’s been no secret that WMU intends to give its sizable
freshman class a chance to prove itself early on, and the
release of the team’s opening two-deep depth chart illustrates that point clearly. There were 18 players with
freshman eligibility that are listed as either a starter or
the primary back-up at their positions for the start of
the season.
DAVIS NAMED TO BILETNIKOFF LIST
Corey Davis was a dominant force for the Broncos at
the receiver position last season, leading all freshman
at the FBS level in receiving yards (941) and receiving
yards per game average (85.5), and set a number of
WMU freshmen records in the process. Now, the sophomore is being considered for one of the top honors
in the country. It was announced earlier this year that
Davis was named to the Biletnikoff Award Preseason
Watch List, given annually to the top wide receiver in
the nation. Davis is one of just five sophomores to be
on the list.
• Davis was named a 2013 Freshman All-American by the
Football Writers Association of America and College Football News after setting WMU freshman record for receiving
yards (941), receptions (67), and 100-yard games (5)
CELISCAR NAMED TO THORPE WATCH LIST
Senior Donald Celiscar became one of five Broncos
named to a preseason awards watch list this year when
he was added to the Jim Thorpe Award Preseason
Watch List., an award given annually to the best defen-
sive back in college football. One of just 34 players on
the list, Celiscar was tied for the team lead in interceptions last season with three and was also named Second
Team All-MAC. He also had nine pass breakups and 60
tackles after starting all 12 games.

P.J. (Phillip John) Fleck was announced as the 15th coach in the 107 year history of the
Western Michigan football program on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012.
In 2013, WMU boasted three All-Mid-American Conference selections, including the MAC
Freshman of the Year in Corey Davis. After the season the Broncos amassed statistically
the best recruiting class in program and MAC history, ranking 58th in the nation. It was
by far the best class in the MAC in 2014 and ranked as the highest recruiting class among
non-BCS programs as well.
The Sugar Grove, Ill., native began his elevation in the coaching ranks as a graduate assistant at The Ohio State University in 2006. He followed up by returning to his alma mater
(Northern Illinois) from 2007-09, serving as the wide receivers coach in 2007-08 and taking
on the duties of recruiting coordinator in 2009. During his tenure at NIU, two receivers
(Britt Davis and Matt Simon) signed free agent contracts to play professionally.
Fleck spent two seasons as the wide receivers coach at Rutgers in 2010-11. The Scarlet
Knights receivers made great strides with Fleck’s guidance, most notably Mohamed Sanu
and Mark Harrison, both of whom emerged as important weapons for the Rutgers offense.
Sanu finished the 2011 season setting both a school and Big East Conference record with
115 receptions for 1,206 yards and seven touchdowns, earning All-Big East honors and
becoming one of the top-rated prospects in the 2012 NFL Draft. In 2010, Fleck helped
Harrison to a team-leading 829 yards and nine touchdowns on 44 receptions.
Fleck followed Greg Schiano to Tampa Bay in 2012 as the Buccaneers receivers coach. Under his tutelage Vincent Jackson is enjoying a career-best season, ranking fifth in the NFL
in receiving yards (1,226), ninth in TDs (8) and fifth in receiving yards per game (87.6).

Fleck played from 1999-2003 at Northern Illinois, capping his collegiate career with the
Huskies defeating Maryland, Alabama and Iowa State, rising to a No. 10 national ranking
en route to a 10-2 mark. He ranks third in career receptions (179) and fourth in career receiving yards (2,162) in NIU history. Fleck has the second most receptions in a season (77)
and led the Huskies win receiving yards in both 2001 (732) and 2003 (1,028). He owns the
school record for punt returns (87) and ranks second in punt return yards (716) in a career.
Fleck earned First Team All-Mid-American Conference in 2003 along with being named
Academic All-MAC and Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-America. Fleck showed his
propensity for winning at the high school level (Maple Kaneland), winning state championships in football, basketball and track.
Fleck played for two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers (2004-05). After signing with the
49ers as a free agent in 2004, he spent most of that season on the practice squad before
making an appearance versus New England late in the year. He was placed on the injured
reserve roster in 2005. In 2006, he left the 49ers to begin his coaching career.
Fleck (33/DOB: 11-29-1980) has a son, C.J., and two daughters, Paisley and Harper.
