Kelly-Poetic Devices Quiz/Dramatic Reading Rehearsal Lesson Plan--1 XAVIER UNIVERSITY POETIC DEVICES QUIZ/REHEARSALS PAGE: 1 of 2 NAME: ____Judy Kelly_________________________________ COURSE:__English I CP_________________________ DATE OF PRESENTATION:__________ PURPOSE: Students will show their knowledge of poetic terms and devices as they are asked to identify and define terms during a written evaluation. Students will utilize second half of class to rehearse their chosen poems in small groups with peer feedback. INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to show their understanding of poetic devices, in a testing situation, which will be a critical aspect used for analysis of poetry throughout the unit. Students will then rehearse their chosen poem in a small group setting of three or four students. Group members will give peer support and responses to assist in student’s dramatic readings. Standards: Reading Standards for Literature 6-12 RL.9-10.4 Craft and Structure 4. Speaking and Listening Standards 6-12 Comprehension and Collaboration SL.9-10.1 SL.9-10.1a MATERIALS: Poetry devices quiz (2 versions), pens, chosen poems, paper for notes on feedback of dramatic readings. PROCEDURE: Poetry Devices Quiz. 1. Teacher will administer 2 versions of quiz. 2. Teacher will advise that students have ½ of class time to complete quiz. Upon completion they should silently read over their chosen poem. 3. Upon completion of quizzes, teacher assigns students to small groups of 3 or 4. 4. Teacher instructs that students will take turns reading their poem for peers. Teacher gives directions for peer feedback and reminds readers to take notes on feedback and to incorporate some of the suggestions for improvement into subsequent rehearsal readings. 5. Group members will “feed” the reader with suggestions for improvements and give positive comments. 6. Reader will make notes of comments and then listen to other members read poems.
