Weekly Objectives:
1. identify and analyze key details related to the elements of literature in a novel
2. identify, understand, and analyze poetic devices within both free verse and metered poems
3. identify and analyze tone and mood in writing
Monday, 2/24/14
Instructional Strategies
1. Opener: Copy the homework board.
2. Check for student questions.
3. Administer the unit test, part one for The Man From the Other Side.
4. Monitor students as they complete the test.
Homework: Review novel materials for tomorrow’s unit test, part two. Focus: characterization, conflict, theme.
Assessments: questioning; discussion; Unit Test, part one
Tuesday, 2/25/14
Instructional Strategies:
1. Check for student questions.
2. Administer the unit test, part two, monitoring students as they complete the test.
3. As students complete the test, have them pick up the “Poetic Devices Glossary” to review definitions and create
examples to complete the final column.
Homework: Review the poetic devices glossary, recording examples in column three.

Wednesday, 2/26/14
Instructional Strategies:
1. Review the poetic devices glossary, allowing students to share their examples.
2. Use a Promethean flipchart to discuss free verse, meter, and rhyme scheme.
3. Distribute “Sweet Spring” and “The Touch of the Wind.” Read the poems aloud, twice.
4. Have students work independently to identify any examples of poetic elements in the poems. Then, have students
work with partners to answer the questions.
5. Use a flipchart to have student volunteers highlight and label the poetic elements on projected copies of the poems.
Discuss student responses to the questions.

Thursday, 2/27/14
Instructional Strategies:
1. Briefly review imagery, similes, metaphors, and personification.
2. Distribute the figurative language packet and have students analyze “The Sky is Low.” Discuss. Have students analyze
the following poems, pausing to discuss each poem as it is finished.
3. Time permitting, return and discuss The Man From the Other Side unit test.
Homework: Review glossary terms, notes, and poems for tomorrow’s quiz.

Friday, 2/28/14
Instructional Strategies:
1. Administer a quiz on poetic devices. (“Hector…” and “Birdfoot…”)
2. Monitor students as they complete the quiz.
3. As they complete the quiz, have students pick up and read the front side of the “Tone and Mood” handout.
4. Following the quiz, review “Tone and Mood” as a class and have students use the handout and the Resource Guide to
complete the back side of the handout, identifying the tone and mood in various scenarios.
