(summarized from http://www.hebrew4christians.com/Grammar/Introduction/Why_Hebrew_/why_hebrew_.html) • • • • • Hebrew, the "Holy Language" (leshon hakodesh) is the original language of the Bible. It is the language in which the Almighty spoke forth the Torah to Moses and it is also the language in which the prophets expressed their revelations. Jesus spoke and read Hebrew. It's the foundation of the New Testament. Studying Hebrew will help you appreciate the Jewish roots of Christianity. Hebrew is the only ancient language to have been revived as a modern spoken language. It is the official language of the state of Israel. The study of Hebrew, and especially obtaining a sense of fluency in the underlying Hebraic / Jewish mindset that informs Scripture, will make you a better student of the Bible. The Bible (both the Old and New Testaments) is a decidedly Jewish book, and the authors of the pages of Holy Scripture were all Jews who were familiar with the Hebrew language and Jewish thinking. This class will be an excellent introduction to Hebrew and will flow nicely into a study of modern Hebrew that will be offered in the fall as Hebrew 2. We will learn about ancient and modern Jewish culture including geography, food, folk tales, festivals, and much more! Students will take short vocabulary quizzes at the beginning of class and complete a take -home exam every few lessons. They can expect 3-4 hours of homework per week. This course qualifies as a high school foreign language credit. **SPECIAL CLASS DAY OPTION: Leap Class Day will be offering Thursday class days as well.
