Poem Music Video Project Task Statement There are many examples of poets who have turned their thoughts into successful song lyrics. Several examples include “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift, “Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day, and "Story of My Life” by One Direction. One of the most popular song writer’s of all time, Bob Dylan, once was asked if his words were more important than his music, he responded, “Words are just as important as the music, there’d be no music without the words.” Songs are the popular lyric poems of the 21st century. Today s poets find status and money in the songs that they create and make popular. Just as authors of stories and poems write with a purpose, composers of song lyrics do the same. Ambitious 21st century poets who wish to connect the popular culture and the masses write song lyrics. How does a poet create a feeling within a poem? How can we create connections with our audience through the structure and rhythm of a poem? Through the analysis and exploration of poems and songs, you will become part of a production team that will develop a music video for a poem you will select and explore the poetic devices in as we continue with the unit. Your poem will be featured in a music video of your own design. You can compose a new melody, use a rhythm of a familiar song or create a new one of your own that can be featured in an original music video production. Later, we will vote on the best music videos in the class. !
