Assignment: Great War Historical Poetry/Song/Play
GOAL:
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the Great War by researching several wartime poets and by
creating a poetry/song/play. They will assemble their information in a manner that is creative, attractive, and
easy to understand.
THE ASSIGNMENT:
Research 2 poets/playwrights/musicians during the Great War. Find examples of poems, songs or plays
that became part of the legacy of the Great War.

The Great War Poetry/Song/Play must include the following components:
Historical background or war poetry and 2 poets/playwrights/musicians
Historical significance
Examples of poems, songs or a play
3. Create a poem/song or play that is reflective of the Great War and experiences of the men and women
involved.
4. Consider recording your poem/song or play.
Success Criteria: Great War Historical Poem/Song/Play:
Knowledge/Thinking

Minimum of one page information sheet using your own words and outlining the historical background
and significance of the wartime poem/song/play and of two particular poets etc.
•
Quality, quantity and accuracy of information
•
Include at least 3 sources included in a bibliography
•
Indicate source and page
•
Organization of research notes
•
Recording of research/information – quality, variety and quantity of information
Communication/Application
•
Poetry/Song/Play is appropriate for high school level
•
Poetry/Song/Play is free of spelling and grammatical errors (where appropriate)
•
Creative and original that clearly reflects Great War Model topic.
•
Overall neatness, includes all components, is accurate – well organized and easy to interpret
•
Recording – voice, pace, dramatic quality
•
Video (if applicable) – voice, pace, dramatic quality, eye contact
