Non Communicable Disease (NCDs) is now a major
threat to Malaysians.
WHO indicates NCDs accounted for 73% of total
deaths in Malaysia.
Malaysia the most obese nation in South East Asia.

1.5 million adults suffer diabetes.

4.8 million adults suffer hypertensions.

Heart disease is the leading cause of deaths in
government hospitals.

The health status of a worker is critical in his / her
performance of work.
Poor health conditions may:

lead to worker being unfit to work.

cause human errors at work leading to accidents.



Programmes on the above may significantly
improve the employees health and wellbeing.

Allocate time for employees to do light exercise –

at work,

during work and

after work.

Work design to avoid static posture at work.

Establishing of gymnasium or recreational room.

Encourage use of staircase for ascending.

Conduct weekend outings.

Family day outings.

Healthy diet – Employers may:




promote healthy eating at canteen by

subsidising healthy food

eliminate junk food and high sugar food.
Distribute healthy menu and recipe for workers to try
at home.
Promote use of calorie intake monitoring software in
smart phones. This will allow employees to monitor
what they consume and the amount of calorie on a
daily basis.

Non-smoking – Employers may:

Promote quit smoking campaign.

Provide support group for smokers.

Restrict smoking areas at the workplace.

Distribute and display posters on smoking.

Prohibit cigarette sale at canteen.

Health screening – Employers may:




Conduct health screening on a regular basis for workers
how are exposed to hazardous chemical at work or as
recommended by the Chemical Health Risk Assessment
under the OSH Act 1994.
Require employees age 40 and above to undergo health
screening
Issue – Employees not giving consent to medical
practitioners to share results of health screening
with employers

NCDs is a national issue and the stakeholders
(employers, employees, trade unions and the
authorities) must work together to enhance
healthcare
Employer can play major role at the workplace to
promote health programmers
It is important to focus on activities that may
reduce the risks of NCDs
