COURSE NUMBER: FILIPINO 100A WBL COURSE TITLE: Intermediate Filipino A WBL TERMS: Fall, Spring, Summer INSTRUCTOR: Staff PREREQUISITES: Filipino 1AB or Filipino XY WBL or equivalent or consent of instructor) OVERVIEW: Filipino 100 A WBL is the first part pf an intermediate class series (Filipino 100 A and B WBL) with emphasis on four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course uses the functional-situational approach in learning a language. The first part of the course involves a review of vocabulary and grammar points learned in Beginning Filipino through dialogues, listening, reading and writing exercises (Lessons 1-7 taken in Filipino 100A) WBL. Then, students learn four necessary skills in the effective use of Filipino: paglalarawan (describing a person, place, or feelings) still for Filipino 100A; and for Filipino 100 B WBL, pagsasalaysay (narrating a story or an incident); paglalahad (defining and explaining);and pangangatwiran (reasoning). The vocabulary of the student is expanded through sample dialogues, and level-appropriate authentic reading and listening texts. STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the course (Filipino 100A WBL), the students should be able to: 1. talk about life milestones, their families and communities, articulate their problems, needs and desires; 2. describe people, places and feelings, 3. explain the use of Filipino’s complex system of affixes; 4. read texts that have both concrete and abstract vocabulary, complex sentences, and idiomatic expressions; 5. write paragraphs, as well as an essay, using both concrete and abstract vocabulary, complex sentences, and idiomatic expressions. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION The class meets for five (5) hours a week online during the Fall and Spring semesters and ten (ten) hours a week online, during the six-week Summer session, real-time in a virtual classroom through Adobe Connect. During these 1 sessions, students are expected to discuss vocabulary and grammar questions, practice questions and answers, and during break-out sessions, do role plays with partners in the break-out rooms. Five (5) additional hours for the Fall and Spring semester and twenty-seven and a half (27.5) additional hours for Summer, of online language laboratory work per week is required, including the following: watching roleplay videos, studying vocabulary and grammar, practicing asking and answering questions, watching video lectures on Filipino grammar, orthography, and history of the language; reading level-appropriate texts and answering the reading comprehension questions, participating in Piazza discussions and writing a short paragraph based on provided writing prompts.
