Specific Course Information
a) Catalog Description
English 098 is a remedial English course offered to students who fail the English aptitude test and are thus are ineligible for the
first credit course. Students are allowed to take this course only twice; third attempts are prohibited. The curriculum focuses on
basic reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary skills, and content is appropriate for students who will major in Engineering.

Failing grade on the KU English Placement Test

Specific Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Comprehend intermediate-level reading passages
2. Write complete and coherent sentences and paragraphs
3. Develop their speaking and listening skills during participation in class

Topics to Be Covered
1.
Use content-based methodology to integrate reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar
2. Assign extensive and varied student writing exercises and tasks
3.
Provide comprehensive feedback to students on their written work
4. Allow students to work in pairs and small groups to complete writing tasks
5. Present opportunities and strategies for developing and expanding vocabulary
6. Model correct English grammar and usage to facilitate student progress
7. Introduce word roots and affixes commonly occurring in scientific terminology
8. Reinforce reading skills such as skimming and scanning, distinguishing fact from opinion, making inferences, and
guessing meanings of words from context
9. Grade in-class writing
