What a year this has been!
Besides developing the Home
Safe and Sound Initiative and
expanding our service area
and offerings, VINE’s staff
invested a significant amount
of time and energy planning
and preparing for our new
building which is due to open
in late spring 2014.
Throughout the course of
this year, I was asked many
times if I ever dreamed that
VINE would grow so much.
It’s probably a good thing
that my earliest vision didn’t
include raising millions
of dollars to re-purpose a
five-story building! Besides
researching best practices
for older adult centers, I’ve
learned about such things as
boilers and security systems,
trash enclosures, and the finer
details of bank financing. As I
have done so, I am continually
reminded that most every
established organization,
whether a hospital, a college,
or non-profit, started small.
Having had a taste of what’s
all involved, I have a renewed
respect for the visionaries and
founders of such places. Most
importantly, I am grateful to
the business and construction
professionals serving on
the VINE Board and in the
community who have guided
this project throughout its
development.
Our fundraising efforts were
significant in FY2013; grant
writing, presentations, donor
visits, and special events were
all an important part of this
past year. It’s a well-known
fact that “fundraising” and
“friend-raising” are closely
connected. We are so pleased
to sponsor and promote the
efforts of the newly formed
VINE Garage Band and
XYZ Live, VINE’s premier
theater troupe. Besides
raising funds for our Capital
Campaign, these talented
age 55+ entertainers, along
with the Summit Singers and
Summit Stompers, are great
ambassadors for positive aging
as they spread VINE’s mission
and goodwill throughout the
community.

the years. As you review the
pages of this Annual Report,
I hope that you will do so
with a sense of gratitude.
VINE continues to grow
because of the contributions
of thousands of people who
believe in the importance of
sharing their time, wisdom,
and financial resources to

their neighbors. As I reflect on

Dear friends,
As a VINE volunteer and
board member, I have seen
the significant impact that
VINE has on our community.
The baby boomer generation
continues to age, and VINE
will be increasingly important
in the years to come. One in
four people will be over the
age of 65 by 2030, and the
need for services for this age
group will continue to expand.
Construction on the
repurposed VINE Adult
Community Center began
in 2013 in order that VINE
will be able to address the
needs of our community now
and in the future. VINE’s
Adult Community Center
will provide a place for adults
in “midlife and beyond” to
improve or maintain their
physical health, socialize
with peers, volunteer to help
others, and access needed
services. This will positively
impact the way in which our
community ages and will
allow more people to maintain
the highest level of health and
independence.
The work that is done and
coordinated at VINE is
unique; these services are
not offered to this extent
anywhere else in our state.
The Minnesota Department
of Human Services awarded
the prestigious 2013 Service
Odyssey Award to VINE in
recognition of its promotion
of its exemplary practices,
services, and advocacy for
elders, people with disabilities,
and their communities.
It has been my privilege
to serve as the President
of the VINE Board of
Directors. VINE is blessed
with hundreds of dedicated
volunteers, excellent and
highly skilled staff, committed
Board members, and many
generous donors who
contribute to VINE’s mission
to promote quality of life and
a culture of caring, sustained

2012–2013
JULY
Thanks to a multi-year grant
from the MN Department
of Human Services, VINE’s
outreach expanded to a 50-mile
radius of Mankato. Through
the Home Safe and Sound
Program, aging adults and their
caregivers receive assistance with
home modifications, chores,
and in-home and social model
respite. 676 community members
received help with one or more
of these services this past year
OCTOBER
After raising the 1.7 million
dollars required for essential
building renovation, VINE
presented $1.00 to Blue Earth
County and officially purchased
the Nichols Building.

SEPTEMBER
AUGUST
VINE’s popular Some Time Away
Respite Program was expanded
to Messiah Lutheran Church in
North Mankato and Wellspring
Faith in Action in St. James. Trained
volunteers, under the direction of
VINE’s staff, engage aging adults
with dementia and other progressive
illnesses in fun and enriching activities
while their family caregivers enjoy a
well-deserved break.
Senator Al Franken visited
the VINE office to promote
his sponsorship of legislation
to reauthorize the Older
American’s Act. He met
with staff, volunteers, and
care receivers and was very
complimentary of our services
and plans for the future.
Debra Zellar joined
VINE’s staff as Fiscal
Manager. Debra is
a Certified Public
Accountant and
brings many years of
experience working in
public accounting.
VINE’s Annual Rake the
Town service event was the
largest ever. An estimated 850
volunteers from 64 groups
helped 260 older homeowners
with their fall yard work.

NOVEMBER
We are grateful to many groups and
organizations that helped with interior
demolition at the Nichols Building.
Employees of Dotson Company,
Taylor Fine Impressions, the Pork
Producers Association, the Gustavus
Men’s Tennis Team, and other volunteer
groups contributed hundreds of hours
of volunteer labor tearing out walls and
recycling building materials.
VINE’s talented
entertainers, XYZ Live
(Xtra Years of Zest), made
their acting debut with
five sell-out performances
of Hot Rods and Poodle
Skirts. All proceeds from
this delightful 50s musical
revue were designated to
our Capital Campaign.

DECEMBER
Sister, a talented trio of real life
sisters who grew up in Hanska,
returned to Mankato for a
Holiday Show. We appreciate
the hospitality extended to
VINE by Hosanna Lutheran
Church for this Capital
Campaign fundraiser.
JANUARY
Over a hundred people
attended a retirement party for
Jim Kirschbaum and
Darlene Schorn. We are
grateful to these two good
people for five years of service
to VINE and the Summit
Center. We are pleased that
they will continue to help us
as volunteers.
During the winter months,
VINE Board members and staff
invested much time planning
and raising funds for our new
building. Volunteer groups
regularly worked on interior
demolition, salvaging of reusable parts, and recycling of
other materials. The VINE
Board of Directors selected
R.W. Carlstrom Construction
to serve as the General
Contractor for repurposing
the Nichols Building as
the new VINE’s Adult
Community Center.

We said goodbye and grieved the
loss of Pat Matejcek, longtime
employee and friend of VINE.
During the decade she worked
at VINE, Pat coordinated
volunteers and services for aging
adults living in rural Blue Earth
County. She was passionate
about helping others through her
church and work as an associate
chaplain at the hospital.
MAY
VINE continues to benefit from
the goodwill of Patti Maes,
event organizer of the 10 Kato
Run and Walk. Hundreds of
people turned out again this year
for this annual Memorial Day
event. Proceeds support VINE’s
volunteer caregiving efforts.
JUNE
VINE was honored by the
Minnesota Department of Human
