INTRODUCTION Although the epic poem Beowulf was written in AD 550 and changed as it was passed orally through the generations, it is still clear which qualities that Beowulf embodies were most honored by those in his time and place. First of all, an ideal Anglo-Saxon warrior needed to possess confidence and courage. It is obvious that these are admired traits when Beowulf brought happiness to a panicstricken Hrothgar with promises to end Grendel’s reign of terror. “This one favor you shall not refuse me—that I alone shall purge all evil from this hall. I need no weapons and fear none” (36). After Hrothgar heard Beowulf, he relied on him to kill Grendel. He was so pleased with Beowulf that the mead hall was prepared for a feast, and the people rejoiced once more. The courage that had been drawn from too many cups of ale had been replaced by a truly brave soldier. “Grendel is no braver, no stronger than I am! I could kill him with my sword, I shall not, easy as it would be” (44). His courage is proven again during his battle with the dragon. “I mean to stand, not run from his shooting flames, stand until fate decides who wins” (101). Even as a seventyyear-old man, Beowulf was willing to fight in a bloody battle to defeat the evil serpent. Beowulf was also admired for his generosity. After accepting payment and reward in precious riches for killing Grendel and his mother, Beowulf sailed home with his men to their king, Higlac. Beowulf shared his well-earned riches with his ruler. “Beowulf had brought his king horses and treasure — gave Welthow’s gift, her wonderful necklace, to Higd, Higlac’s queen” (91).
