40 points
In this unit, we learned that an epic hero is “a larger-than-life figure, usually male,
who embodies the ideals of a nation or race. Epic heroes take part in long, dangerous
adventures and accomplish great deeds that require courage and superhuman strength.”
For this assignment, you will write a 5-paragraph essay on one of the following topics:
1.) Explain what makes Odysseus an epic hero in the story of The Odyssey. That is, how
does he embody the ideals of Greece during that time period? Be sure to point to specific
examples from the story to support the points that you develop.
2.) Explain what qualities an epic hero for our society today would demonstrate. Be sure
to consider what obstacles our society currently faces and what values are important in
our society today. Feel free to make comparisons between Odysseus in The Odyssey and
what a current-day epic hero would be like.
Format
Introduction: This paragraph will be between 3-7 sentences long and should serve to
lead the reader into the topic. It should give the reader any background material that is
necessary for the rest of the essay to make sense. Also, this paragraph should end with a
clear thesis statement.
Body Paragraphs: These paragraphs will be 5-10 sentences each. A good body
paragraph will begin with a clear topic sentence that directly supports your thesis
statement. In each body paragraph, be sure to make a clear point (topic sentence),
provide support, and then follow through and explain how the support you provided
does what you want it to do. Some body paragraphs will benefit from having multiple
supporting examples.
Conclusion: This paragraph will be 5-7 sentences long. In it, you should restate the thesis
of your essay. Then, review the main supporting points. Finally, try to leave your reader
with an additional thought that somehow ties the topic of your essay to the larger world.
Think of it as answering the question “So what?”.
Your final draft will need to be typed and submitted to Turnitin.com.
