Texas 4-H Roundup - The BIGGEST Event of the Texas 4-H Year! http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/roundup June 10-14, 2013 - Texas A&M University College Station, Texas Texas 4-H Roundup is a qualifying and invitational event for youth between the ages of 11 and 18 who have successfully placed in a qualifying event at the District level or signed up to compete in an invitational event at the State level. Texas 4-H Roundup includes approximately 50 different contests and workshops that test 4-H members on life skills in such attributes are decision making, public speaking, organization, and working with others. These contests include such things as Fashion Show, Food Show, an assortment of judging contests, and educational presentations. The 2013 Texas 4-H Roundup will be held in College Station, Texas on the campus of Texas A&M University from June 10th to June 14th, 2013. The majority of the Roundup events require each individual or team to qualify at the county and district level. However, Texas 4-H Roundup now offers thirteen invitational style contests that allow intermediate and senior 4-H’ers to participate without having to qualify. Non-qualifying seniors and intermediate agedivision 4-H’ers from around the state will have the opportunity to compete in invitational style contests and workshops. These contests and workshops will give younger 4-H members and other senior 4-H'ers the opportunity to come and participate for the day. Other items 2013 Youth Poultry Institute The 2013 Poultry Institute for Youth, sponsored by the Texas A&M University Poultry Science Department and the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, will be held Sunday, June 16 through Tuesday, June 18, 2013 on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station, Texas. This program gives high school students with an interest in the poultry industry a chance to gain firsthand knowledge. They will have the opportunity to meet both Texas A&M faculty and Texas poultry industry leaders. A portion of the institute will also include hands on activities as well as field trips to local commercial poultry companies. Students who will be a junior or senior in high school in the Fall of 2013 or have just recently graduated from high school are eligible to attend. Youth interested in a career in poultry science should make a special effort to attend the workshop. Departmental personnel will be available to counsel potential students. Educational activities include in-depth discussion on brooding, management, sanitation and feeding programs, and selection and processing methods for broilers, turkeys and roasters. Discussion on selection procedures and bird quality characteristics will be followed by hands-on practice in early culling and selecting and putting together show pens. Like us on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/TexasAgriLifePoultryExtensi on State 4-H Photography Workshop & Judging Contest The Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program is pleased to announce "The Art Behind the Career" Texas 4-H Career Photography Workshop. This new and innovative approach to project instruction will be held at the Central Texas Christian School in Temple, Tx on July 20th and 21st. This state-wide photography workshop will be a handson educational experience for 4-H members and leaders to learn new, and improve, skills in photography, while gaining a greater depth of knowledge of the career behind particular areas of photography. Career areas which will be highlighted during the workshop include: newspaper, forensic, portrait, wedding/special event, Internet Design, Magazine, Commercial, Outdoor, and Photography/Media Teacher. A new concept that will be presented at the workshop will include a Photography Judging Contest. This new contest will allow youth to become the photography professionals through their evaluation and placing of four photographs in each class asked to judge. Prizes and awards will be presented to the top judgers! The workshop, hosted by both the Bell County 4-H Photography Advisory Board and the Texas 4-H Office, is open to the FIRST 100 participants who register on 4-H CONNECT beginning on May 1st. Registration will close when the workshop fills up, or on July 1st. Registration is ONLY $25.00 per person and includes instruction, service-project materials, lunch on Saturday, and a flash drive with all materials. 9th Annual Naturescapes Photography Contest The Naturescapes 2013 Photography Contest and Exhibition is now open! The contest is now in its 9th year. Naturescapes is co-sponsored by the Hill Country Photography Club and the Hays County Master Naturalists. Entries are accepted April 1st - July 8th, 2013. Goals of the contest and exhibit include increasing public awareness of the importance of protecting our natural world and giving photographers at all levels of experience a chance to capture, share, and receive recognition for beautiful and inspiring images. Suggested subject include natural scenery, wildlife, plants, and people and pets in the natural environment. This year they are accepting photographs taken in greenspaces and natural areas throughout Hays, Blanco, Comal, Guadalupe, Caldwell and Travis Counties. In the past, only entries from Hays County were accepted. The contest is open to resident and visiting photographers of all ages. A $100 prize will be awarded for Best in Show, $75 for the best Youth Category photo, and $75 for the best Natural Waterscape photo. Up to four $50 Awards of Excellence will be presented for the next most outstanding photographs. Additional Awards of Merit will be presented at the discretion of the contest juror, Chase Fountain. Chase is a Texas Parks & Wildlife Department staff photographer. His images have appeared in National Geographic Explorer Traveler, Men's Journal, Tide, Prime, Texas Highways and Texas Monthly, as well as the Associated Press. Please visit the contest's web page for complete information. MASH Camp Are you a young person interested in the career fields of safety, health, or medicine? Then you need to attend the 3rd annual MASH Camp hosted by the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program on June 24-26, 2013 at Texas A&M University in College Station. This career focused camp allows for youth to work sideby-side with professionals in the areas of medical, athletic, and emergency first responders in hands-on activities to experience the day-to-day life of learning and doing. Registration for this camp is limited and more information as well as registration dates will be released in mid-March. Time to start thinking recordbooks! Record keeping is an important part of every 4-H project. It helps 4-H members develop skills in organization, goal setting, communication, time management, evaluation, reflection, problem-solving, money management and documenting events and actions. All Comal County 4-H members who turn in a recordbook by the annual due date (June 28th this year!) will be recognized at receive a 4-H project pin at the annual 4-H Awards Program (August 15, 2013). Recordbooks are judged annually at the county, district and state levels. 4-H recordbooks are required as a part of the 4-H Gold, Silver and Bronze Star Awards, CCJLSA scholarship, and Extension Education Scholarship applications. This person must have been involved as an Adult Leader, taught 4-H projects, or given assistance to the 4-H program in some manner. Exemplary leadership, citizenship and concern for youth are further qualifications. Scrapbooks are compiled throughout the year and due at the end of the 4-H year, prior to the awards program. Friend of 4-H Award This is awarded to an individual outside of the 4-H organization who has made a very special contribution to 4-H through his or her time, influence or special support. SCRAPBOOKS are DUE AUGUST 1st in the Extension office. Meritorious Service Award This award is presented to a business or organization which has given outstanding support to the 4-H program. Clubs have a choice of scrapbook format: 1. Traditional Scrapbook - Printed photographs & memorabilia in a traditional scrapbook format Must be smaller than 13"x17". 2. Digital Scrapbook - create a scrapbook using a digital scrapbook format; submit via email in a commonly used format (pdf, jpg, tif) OR print pages and submit hard copy of scrapbook, must be smaller than 13"x17". If submitting electronic copy, it must be submitted via email to the Extension office by the due date. 3. PowerPoint Presentation - submit a PowerPoint presentation of your club's activities; submit via email to the Extension office by the due date. Honorary 4-H Member Award This award is given to a person who has served 4-H with loyalty, enthusiasm, leadership, and support, and who works or has worked directly with the 4-H program Tractor Supply Paper Clover Campaign The spring Paper Clover fundraiser is happening May 8th -19th in all Tractor Supply Company/Del’s stores. There are several exciting features that have been added to this spring’s promotion: TSC will be offering a $5 Paper Clover available for purchase in addition to the $1 option; a Purina coupon will be attached to each Paper Clover; a new incentive program for counties to receive additional funds; and a regional 4-H award winner, which will award $1,000 to the top performing state in each 4-H region. 2013 Pony of the Americas Essay Contest Texas Pony of the Americas Club is pleased announce the 2013 Win A POA 4-H Essay Contest. This is a statewide 4-H contest open to registered Texas 4-H club members between the ages of 9 (or entered in the third grade) and 16 as of August 31. The purpose of this contest is to acquaint 4-H members with the Pony of the Americas breed, horse ownership and care in general. The winner will receive a registered POA, halter and lead rope, a Junior Membership for a year in the Texas POA Club, and various other donated prizes. “Texas POA is very excited and pleased to offer this contest to Texas 4-H members. We have a well-bred and gorgeous yearling POA filly donated by Texas POA Hall of Fame Member, Norm Stevenson. She is a nice mover and some kid is going to be very proud to own her,” said Texas POA President LaRena Phillips. The 4-H filly’s barn name is Clover and she is papered through the National Pony of Americas Club under the name DNS Spanish Cover Girl. Clover was foaled in March 2012 and is by the AQHA stallion Last Spanish Array and out of RPR’s Kidos Cover Girl. Clover is sorrel with a big white blanket with spots. She is currently being fitted and taught ground manners by the Lone Oak 4-H Club members. In order to enter the contest, 4-Hers must complete an essay, questionnaire and something creative, as well as provide a letter of recommendation from their 4-H leader. West Texas Youth Vet Science Workshop The West Texas Youth Veterinary Science Workshop will be held June 2-6 at the Tom Green County 4-H Center in San Angelo. The event is open to all Texas youth, but as enrollment is limited to 30 students, early registration is advised. Individual registration is $360. Course topics will include: zoology, toxicology, parasitology, anatomy, nutrition, first aid, livestock health management, large and small animal practice, horse science and more. The workshop will include classroom study, lab work and field trips. Participants must be of high school age, have an interest in veterinary science and be willing to work in teams. Applications are now available and must be submitted to the AgriLife Extension office in Sutton County by May 10. Participants will be informed of their acceptance by May 17. This move back to College Station also bring changes that we hope will benefit our clientele. The communities of Bryan and College Station have shown a huge outpouring of support this year and are really looking forward to hosting us in 2013. As a result of this support, construction on campus in dorms, and moving our HUB back to Reed Arena, all housing will be located OFF-CAMPUS in 2013. This is a major change in how we have done housing in the past. We feel we have a list of hotels that will provide excellent rates, services, and amenities. Each of these hotels is committed to making your stay in Bryan/College Station a great one. It is very important that you book your rooms early as these rates will not last until the week of Roundup. Texas 4-H Center Summer Staff Do you want a summer job where you can play with kids, swim, dance, and have fun while gaining valuable leadership experience? The 4-H Conference Center provides an opportunity for you to work in an atmosphere where you will not only impact the lives of young people, but also learn a lot about yourself and make lifelong friends. Each position provides valuable leadership training, work experience, fun and profit for individuals who truly desire to be part of a positive summer experience for over 2,500 youth. If are interested in being a part of the summer staff at the 4-H Center, please visit our website at: http://texas4hcenter.tamu.edu to fill out an application. 2013 Range Camp On June 25-27, 2013 the Comal-Guadalupe Soil & Water Conservation District #306 will hold its 17th annual Range Camp in Wimberley, Texas. Registration is open to campers ages 12 to 18, from Comal, Guadalupe, Hays, Bexar, Caldwell, Karnes, Blanco and surrounding counties. Cost of the camp is $50 for the 3-day course. They are looking for 25 to 30 campers who are interested and want to learn more about our natural resources and range management practices. Instruction will be provided by USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service specialists, Extension Service specialists, Texas Parks & Wildlife expert volunteers and other instructors with knowledge in various fields of range management. Topics covered in this year's program will be: - soils information - wildlife habitat management - plant identification - range improvements and management - water quality/quantity Registration deadline is May 31, 2013.
